It's official - Didic has signed!

Also, with respect to going over the cap, one needs to consider the salaries lost due to the outgoing players. Having worked with one of the current Ottleti players for years and knowing him quite well, I know (for almost) a fact that several of their outgoing players (Acosta, Espejo, Shaw, Haworth and Ouimette) were all pulling in 50K+ a year. That opens up tons of salary space for new signings. Moreover, given the obvious ties Ottleti have with Spain, some of the players may be making this move as a way to open up their future and thus would sacrifice some of their current salary, but that is just my opinion.

Friendly at 1 against CS Saint Laurent, season seat holders can go watch.

There was entrance info in an email but I deleted it.

Will be interesting to see the result.

They beat Forge in a friendly.

May give HFX a tough go in the Voyageurs Cup

I asked Carl Haworth Saturday if there was any unannounced signings hiding in the team box with him, and he said no and another guy who was standing next to him laughed and said no. Piccioli was the one next to him based on this.

I honest to god don't know what to make of the last game. On one end we took care of business and it was fairly comfortable but on the other a lot of it was down to an early red card for them and still gave another late goal...

7 out of 9, should be 9 of 9, but best to sit back and watch can’t judge after 270, lose the first must win on Wednesday I'm slightly concerned

I know this player well, an outside back. Very efficient and modest, neat skills with the ball, but perhaps was lacking full explosiveness, and rarely did anything outside the box. He paints journeyman even in CPL. I watched him those games Ballou was there. Compare to the other fullback of that team, Miranda, who is at Betis. Morer is quite short, I'd say they were trying to fashion him after Jordi Alba.

In fact I actually used to sit near part of his family, his mom and relatives, when I watched Barça, not all games, but enough that I recall specific conversations with them. I didn't plan that, but being a club member I could get into the good seating at the Mini Stadium (now demolished), just ended up that way. Anecdotes like how back then Barça had B players living in apartments in the city to get dogs, it was a big thing, you are 19-22 years old and go home from training or a game and have to walk and take care of a dog.

I think his mom is from Ecuador or Peru, he's from up the coast from Barcelona, I same place as Lamine Yamal. Ended up in Andorra, which was 2nd division, maybe not the level he should have found. Then hasn't taken off.

another interesting part: he hasnt played a competitive game since May of 2023 so a whole year...signed a five year contract with famalicao in 2020 but ended up only playing ten competitive games for them...therefore he clearly wasnt in the plans and they finally came up with this solution for him...as a reminder the majority owner of famalicao Idan Ofer also has a third of atletico madrid

Well maybe he is working his way back into competitive play, he needs a reset, like Ballou, and then there's this idea that somehow at Atlético O you are not losing all contact with the Spanish league (which you most likely are though).

If he's fit he'll run up and down as a back or mid, and he's technically good, so we'll see how he pans out.

FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
JUNE 5, 2024
OTTAWA, ON - Atlético Ottawa has today announced that CEO and General Manager Fernando López has stepped away from his role with the Ottawa-based Canadian Premier League (CPL) club.

“We deeply appreciate Fernando's commitment during his time at the club and we wish him the greatest success in his future endeavours," said Miguel-Ángel Gil Martín, CEO, Atlético de Madrid. "Atlético de Madrid remains committed to our project in Ottawa, and we look forward to building upon the strong foundations created by Fernando and his team as we strive for greater success in Canada.”

Since he arrived at the club with its inception in 2020, Fernando has played a pivotal role in establishing Atlético Ottawa, both on and off the field. López instituted the ‘Atleti Way’ and built a professional soccer club from the ground up, growing the club in all key categories, year over year.

López moved from Spain to live in Canada five years ago. During his tenure, his determination and passion have been instrumental in reaching important milestones such as; being crowned the 2022 Regular Season Champions, hosting the 2022 CPL Finals in front of a record-setting 15,000 fans, as well as winning five CPL Business Awards including the 2023 CPL Club of the Year.
Atlético Ottawa President and Strategic Partner, Jeff Hunt, added: “Atlético Ottawa wants to thank Fernando for his time during these 5 seasons with the club. His leadership and strategic vision have been fundamental to establishing today a successful organization. We sincerely thank Fernando for his dedication and professionalism, and we want to state that he is leaving an immense footprint in all our hearts. Atleti and Ottawa will always be your home.”

In the interim, Atletico Ottawa’s Business Operations will be spearheaded by Jon Sinden, Chief Operating Officer and the Football Operations will be led by JD Ulanowski Assistant General Manager and Director of Football Operations, alongside Head Coach Carlos González. All aspects of the business will receive support from leaders from Atlético de Madrid, who are committed to the development of this project and the growth of soccer in Canada.

In leaving Ottawa, López said: “I am honoured to have played a small part in the history of Atlético Ottawa and I will be forever grateful for the support and love I have received over all these years from all our players, coaches, staff and fans. I leave knowing the club is in the best possible place. We are top of the CPL table and unbeaten and in the hands of a great group of talented players and coaches and an amazing front office team. I will miss you all and I will hold many massive memories that I will cherish forever. A piece of me will always remain in Ottawa, and trust from this day, I will be your biggest supporter."

Off to Real Zaragoza...

Apart from the political dig in that tweet (the newspaper Heraldo de Aragón, a Spanish classic, now become a shill for the conservative regional government), it makes sense that you might leverage solid work in a CPL club to get a better job elsewhere. I'm sure his salary will double or more. Real Zaragoza is a major club, minority owned by Jorge Mas the Cuban-American businessmen who also has a stake in Inter Miami; another owner, Jiménez de Parga, is on the board of Atlético de Madrid. Zapater, the At Ottawa player, had his best years at Zaragoza--there are connections. But they can't get back to top flight this last decade and have been closer to dropping into third division, despite a large stadium and even European trophies.

They last won the Spanish Copa in 2004 over Real Madrid and won the Cup Winners Cup vs. Arsenal with one of the greatest winning goals in a final ever, m 120, by Nayim, let's relive that moment for Spurs fans too:
