I don't get it

Until 2008 Canadians could go to European youth setups at a younger age irrespective of passport. MLS and NASL academies are 1) in their infancy for all practical purposes and 2) comparatively poor evaluated even against smaller European clubs. There are a ton of systemic challenges that get in the way of development of players 17-22 in North America generally, and Canada specifically in addition to the low(ish) quality of the academies. We were better off when our top youth players were going to (primarily) Europe at 14 or 15 and occasionally younger even if it did result in the occasional rebranding of Canadians as Dutch etc. Important to note that most of the defections were passport based anyway.

Jpg is right to stress the point.

From the above article..."An under-23 selection is slated to play a tournament in Qatar."

any details?

This tournament was initially discussed here:

Sounds like a great chance to have a look some young players that have as yet to crack the MNT.  The tournament effectively overlaps the Scotland friendly so there could be some interesting (controversial :)) decisions as to who is selected for which tournament.

Some solace in the fact both Honduras and Mexico qualified. Canada just needs to get a bit better. If we could get by a team like Honduras we could take that spot.

In theory we played them 3 times this past year. Won 1 tied 1 and lost 1. Unfortunately we lost the one that mattered.
