jpg75
Our second and last group match to determine the winner of the group and who avoids Mexico (presumably) in the QF. CR defeated Guadeloupe 3-0 last night and have forced us to win the match to win the group. Other indirect results to indicate relative strength: CR lost to El Salvador 3-2 agg. (2-1,1-1) in the playoff, ES lost to the Hondurans 4-0 in qualifying group play. Honduras beat T&T 3-0 in a friendly last week - we beat T&T 1-0 in a friendly last month. jpg75
So, in theory, we should beat Costa Rica 11-2, right? Not quite. We're a goal better than T&T, but Honduras is 3 goals better so that means Honduras is 2 goals better than us. Honduras beat ES by 4 so we would beat ES by 2. ES beat CR by 1 goal over 2 legs, so .5 goal per game, so we would beat CR by 2.5 goals Another measuring stick comes tonight in the Panama-Suriname game. Panama beat CR 1-0 in qualifying. Suriname has played 2 teams we've played, the US and T&T. They lost to the US 4-0 and lost to T&T 2-1 in both legs of their qualifying playoff. We lost to the US 2-0 and 5-0, and we also beat T&T 1-0. Of course all of this comparison means a whole lotta nothing when the game starts, but it's fun to try and get an idea of the relative strength of the teams involved. IMO, the US and Honduras are the clear favourites for the U20 title.

Thanks for posting the link, totally forgot about that... My predicition is 3-0.5 for Canada, we'll take the early 1-0 lead and the Ticos will appear to level the score but the ball splits in half when it strikes the crossbar and only half of it crosses the goal line. The ensuing shock sends them into deep depression and we pounce for 2 quick goals...

Tuscan
I think we're in tough for this one. This is a Central American country playing in Central America, used to the Central American climate as well as the sh1tty Central American pitch (is that sand getting kicked up constantly by the players?). If we come out as tentative and nervous as we did against Guadeloupe we're going to get punished quickly and severely. Bad start: 2-0 CR at half. Good start: 0-0 at half. Much MUCH better than expected start: 1-0 us at half.
Soccerpro
If we score early we'll be ok, otherwise if we get behind, it will be tough going.

CRC is another side in this region that has really opened some eyes at world youth level tournaments. And they looked good in the game that I saw them play the other night. You can pretty much throw out the book in regards to the pecking order and strength of various sides when it comes to U20 play. For example, we have great record playing Mexico but a not so great record versus the Ticos in past U20 matches. This is what makes this fun to follow because, unlike the senior side, we don't have to have that inferiority complex, there is no Azteca mystique when it comes to U20 mathes. Nor is there and issue with home support or suspicious reffing. That said, there is a lot of good talent that is absent for us.

If our wing backs don't improve their play from the last outing, we're in for a long game.

Macksam
It's a huge blow to lose arguably our best player for this match. I'm confused as to why he's even in this tournament. I mean, he's practically solidifed a starting position with the Caps and is playing regularly. There is no reason why he shouldn't have rejected the call and focused on his professional game instead. Grizzly
Fresenga injured and replaced by Thompson. Will see how much this hurts us as Fresenga did not look very good so far.
jpg75
Nice one CONCACAF.com announcer; "Costa Rica qualified through Central American qualifiers by defeating El Salvador 6-nil on aggregate". Yeah, 6-nil because ES forfeited both of their results from using an ineligible player! Do your homework man... ****! Costa Rica scores. 1-0. Long shot from 25 yards, looked like it deflected off the defender, but it didn't, JLL misplayed it totally...didn't look like it swerved as much as the announcer seemed to think. guppy
What a freaky goal.. it was like the keeper dove to one side before the ball was struck! That was a weird one.
Grizzly
Goal was deserved and JLL was pretty much keeping us in the game (his play being the only real positive so far). Still a bit of a bummer to get scored on a fluke like that in which the ball takes a weird bounce and changes direction. A lot of weird bounces and dead balls on this pitch.
