CONCACAF WC Qualifying - Round 1

Recommended Posts

In regards to the Mexicans playing outside Azteca; with most of their players now playing outside of Mexico they no longer have the advantage of being acclimated to the elevation. Up until a few cycles ago ('98/'02) the bulk of El-Tri played at home for the big Mexican clubs who happen to be located in locales with altitude; Mexico DF, Guadalajara, Toluca, etc. But now that most of them are now based in Spain, England or Germany, the advantage is gone.

Mack and ‘Soda’ dropped for Cuba match

Tuesday June 17 2008

by Neto Baptiste

Midfielder Karanja Mack, who now plays professionally in Trinidad and striker Okeem “Soda” Challenger, who netted Antigua and Barbuda’s lone goal against Aruba in March, have been dropped, as the nation prepares to take on Cuba in the first match of their second round home and away 2010 World Cup Qualifiers tonight.

The two were left out of an 18-member squad released yesterday as the nation seeks to go one up on Cuba before playing the return leg on 22 June. The 18-man squad includes goalkeepers, Molvin James and Javid Joseph, defenders Garfield “Garry” Gonsalves, Dave “Little man” Carr, Marc Joseph, Ricky Browne, Tyio Simon and Bryan Samuel.

Midfielders Tiran Williams, Troy “Darrie” Mellanson, Troy “Bucket” Simon, Justin Cochrane and Lennox “Fox” Julian are also included while strikers Gayson “Bubbler” Gregory, Peter “Big Pete” Byers, Kerry “Arab” Skepple, Rackley “Leech” Thomas and Randolph “Etty” Burton complete the selections.

The team will be coached by William “Willie” Donachie and Derrick “Pretty Boy” Edwards. Both will be assisted by Rowan “Porridge” Benjamin.

Antigua and Barbuda would need to come out of tonight’s contest with a victory if they are to have a real chance of advancing past Cuba and into the group stage of the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

The coaching staff would also be hoping that the players carry out their instructions on the field of play as they prove to the Antigua public that they are headed down the right path.

During his most recent interview with the Antigua Sun, coach “Pretty Boy” Edwards stressed the importance of public support during tonight’s critical clash as it would serve as added motivation for the national team.

“I would just like to see the public believe in us and once we get the support I assure you that we can deliver – it's about country now and it's not about individual players – it's about what we want to do for our country and creating history for our country so its about time that the public understand that we need to put our differences aside and come together. We are really going to need the public support because without the crowd there is no football,” Edwards said.

Speaking on the home team’s chances of coming out of tonight’s fixture against Cuba victorious, Edwards said that they are approaching the encounter with the intentions of winning.

“Nothing in life comes easy and we don’t want to think that we are that good so we can just go out and beat Cuba. Cuba is a professional team and we are an amateur team but I think that with a little bit of luck and hard work and discipline that we can come out on top on Tuesday and also in the return leg,” Edwards said.

“Our goal is to win the game and once we win this match then we will start thinking about the second leg in Cuba because a win will put the pressure on Cuba to go back home and win so it doesn’t matter how we win whether by 5-4 or 5-0, we just need to win,” he added.

The encounter is expected to kick-off at 7p.m. at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds and carries an admission fee of $20 per adult while all school children will be allowed free entrance.

Also, the public is advised that replica jerseys are now available at a cost of US$25 and that group discounts for orders of 10 or more are available. Please contact the office 562-6014 to secure your uniform.

So many goodies to take out of this article - love that jerseys cost 25 bucks and that schoolkids can see the game for free - what a beautiful world this would be if that were the case from time to time in Canada and other places too.

This game is today (Tuesday)and if anybody finds a broadcast, please let me know as it looks like goltv doesnt have it.

How about if you transplanted the A&B nicknames to the Canadian roster:

Jaime "Little Man" Peters, Paul "Arab" Stalteri, Pat "Bucket" Onstad, Ali "Fox" Gerba, Richard "Leech" Hastings, Adrian "Pretty Boy" Cann, Rob "Big Pete" Friend

Mexico wins their game 7-0...

and CR over Grenada 3-0

and Guatemala over St Lucia 3-1

looks like no upsets. Gawd, the fecking Costa Ricans are dirty buggers - one faked serious injury on a high boot to the chest while the replay showed it was a foot away from making any contact whatsoever.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure it was the same guy who scored off the FK lol. That was pathetic.

That was one hell of an atmosphere though...reminded me of a Hawaii football game.

Their second goal was also obviously offside, I'm surprised the announcers didn't notice it. The guy who received the ball and whiffed on it making it an unintentional back pass to the eventual goal scorer was offside when he received the ball from the player who headed it to him. It annoys me that other teams are allowed to get goals that should be disallowed while we continually get goals disallowed that should have stood.

Trini had a man who was yellow carded twice and not sent off according to the fifa match tracker.

Gotta love Carlos "blind as a" Batres!

It says that both yellow cards were issued in the eight minute. Sounds more like an error from the match tracker

Damn..that was fun to watch, unless you are Panamanian...3 goals in last 20 send El Salvador to next round on aggregate. The deciding goal was a long blast that luckily hit a teammate's head and went over goalie head in 88 th minute. Poor Panama.
