US celebrity culture permeates their roster announcement.

All from NWSL ex Horan (but on loan from the Thorns). Only new name is uncapped Savannah DeMelo of Racing Louisville FC.

Aside from injured players like Macario, most complaints are about no Hatch, Coffey & Krueger. And the usual segment saying they won't watch because Rapinoe is on the roster.

12 players from Tokyo Olympics & 14 players from WC 2019 rosters excluded due to injury, retired or not selected.

FIFA isn't pleased with the ticket sales in Aotearoa. 1.1 million tickets have been sold so far but Aotearoa accounts for only 23% of the number while hosting 45% of the matches.

They're blaming the modest selling power of the Football Ferns who are on a 10 match winless streak.

Tix are priced to go. $10 NZD for kids and $20 NZD is the lowest for adults.

Japan remains the only major market without a WC broadcast deal. The issues being faced sound similar.

The impasse highlights the sport’s struggle to find a broader foothold in Japan, two years after the launch of a professional league that was heralded as a pathway to mainstream recognition and over a decade since the national team’s historic triumph at the 2011 Women’s World Cup.

The Japan Football Association never developed a true plan for building on that momentum, eventually leading to declining interest in the domestic game.

“We didn’t think we needed to do something special (right away) for women’s football because we misunderstood that the movement would last a long time,” Norio Sasaki, Nadeshiko Japan’s head coach between 2008 and 2016 and currently the director of women’s soccer at the JFA.

In fact it was Sasaki’s reliance on his 2011 stars, rather than developing new talent, that led to Nadeshiko Japan’s shock failure to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics, resulting in a four-year gap between major tournaments and forcing the team further out of the limelight.

The WE (Women's Empowerment) League has been hamstrung by a reduced pandemic-era budget under the JFA, a struggle to attract big-name sponsors and stagnant crowds.

One key miscalculation has been the decision to adopt a fall-spring calendar to ease transfers. But even special funds established by the league and the JFA were not enough to draw any marquee foreign players to Japan.

Meanwhile, winter breaks lasting as long as three months have resulted in significant declines in attendance in the spring, indicating that casual fans have been disconnected as a result of the lack of games.

That disconnect has extended to the national team. Between 2010 and 2022, Nadeshiko Japan played just 23% of games in Japan — less than half of the men’s team’s 47%. Nadeshiko has played in the capital just twice since 2011, depriving the team of much needed media exposure. With so many Nadeshiko friendlies taking place overseas, broadcasters have struggled to get viewers to tune in.

Not many nations can claim to be women’s world champions; it’s an elite group that Japan are part of, and for the first time in 16 years, the matches will be taking place in a time zone that’s favourable for Asia. But where’s the hype? Where’s the buzz around a team stacked with talent?

In seeing BMO ads first at Nations League finals and now at the Gold Cup, I thought Scotiabank had been Concacafed. But Scotia is still with Concacaf while BMO's deal is the first company to sign a FIFA + Concacaf combo deal. FIFA's sponsorship have typically been global but now they have introduced regional packages.

BMO is an offcial sponsor of the 2023 World Cup & 2026 World Cup for North America only.

And BMO is the official bank of the Men & Women's Gold Cup and Nations League Finals from 2023-25.

FIFA engagement ramp up continues with march of nations across Sydney Harbour Bridge and release of the official chant.

Official chant? Is this something they have done in the past or is this new? I don't remember there being official chants in World Cups in the past. I wonder if they are going to be pumping it in stadiums or if they are just hoping to convince fans to adopt the chant. I presume it will be some sort of pre-game chant played in the stadium to try to hype the crowd up for the games.

There has been official songs which has more recently morphed into albums. There has been entrance anthems. There has been broadcaster theme music.

Usually chants are left to the supporters imagination. But chants haven't been as prevalent at women's World Cups. Now, we have a World Cup with travelling support tempered. This might be FIFA's way of nudging neutral fans.

Official song is now out. Do It Again. Benee Ft. Mallrat.

Football Ferns whānau trim 38 players down to their 23 World Cup squad. 10 will make their World Cup debut.

Prospects will never look good when Unattached FC leads with 8 players.

At the other end of spectrum, 4 play in the WSL. Then, 3 Australia, 2 Scotland and 1 each spanning NCAA, NWSL along with Iceland, Sweden, Finland & Denmark.

They will play Vietnam on July 10 in Napier. Opening match vs Norway at Eden Park is still a few thousand away from a sell-out.
