Canadians in Norway (Tippeligaen)

Recommended Posts

Once again Poz opened the scoring for Haugesund, but this time his team had an easier time of it as they defeated Pors Grenland by a whopping 6-1 margin at home in Haugesund.

Ex-Canadian and Haitian international Josuè Mayard received a red card for the visitors when the score was 4-1.

With 6 points from their 1st 2 matches of the fall season, Haugesund have moved clear of the relegation fight for now, and are in the middle of the table with 13 points after 12 matches.

18-year-old Christian Adolfo Nunez Lopez has signed a 3-year deal with Lyn in the Norwegian Tippeliagen.

http://www.fxt.no/tippeligaen/lyn/article683363.ece

The former Montreal Impact player has been training with Lyn, and playing with the junior team in the JET tournament currently being held. He will have to wait for some red tape - his work permit - before joining Lyn, but club director Torgeir Bjarman is quoted as saying that Christian will compete for a role in the Oslo club's sentral midfield.

Great news for Nunez!!! Good job.

Start fan, is it long before he'll get his papers?

Nunez was one of the player that impressed me during the Brazil serie and this surely a great move for him and for our U-20 team that will benefit from having him training at a high level all season long.

Hard to tell; in Norway the whole country pretty much shuts down for 3 weeks in July for summer holidays, and gov't offices only have skeleton staff to handle emergencies. It may be as much as 2-3 weeks before the papers are in order, although it could also be less.

The Norwegians take their holidays seriously - one reason I am moving home next month after 27 years in Canada. :D

Lillestrøm hosting Odd Grenland - Olivier Occéan v. Ali Gerba - finishes off round 12 today.

Gerba was involved in the first goal: he went up for a loose ball against Lillestrsøm keeper Müller causing the ball too squirt loose and deflect into the goal off an LSK defender. Occéan started on the bench but came on halfway through the 2nd half. The game ended 2-2.

In Intertoto play today Lillestrøm got an excellent 1-1 result away at Newcastle. They will feel that gives them a good opportuinity to advance to the UEFA cup, and Newcastle continue their recent history of trouble against Norwegian teams. Report at http://www.uefa.com/competitions/IntertotoCup/FixturesResults/Round=2353/match=84376/Report=RP.html

In division 2, Stord/Moster took a hard-fought 1-0 away win at Askøy.

In Norwegian cup play earlier this week, Marco Reda and Sogndal took a hard-fought win in penalty kicks over Tippeligaen team Stabæk.

Start Fan in Exile:

What's the word on Steven Ademolu?

"Stephen Ademolu was not on the bench for Tromsø."

Is he not playing because of an injury or is it that he just can't break into the lineup?

If you have any information on him please let me know.

Tromsø have had a tough season, and so has Ademolu - he has had some injury problems, but is back on the bench today (as is Kenny, who has lost his starting GK job to new arrival Ramovic).

Stephen seems to be mainly used as a sub when the team needs some speed and an offensive push, but has not been a regular starter this year.

Round 19:

HamKam - Odd Grenland: 3 - 0

Ali Gerba played 64 minutes for a rather uninspired Odd

Molde - Viking: 3 - 1

Sandro Grande played 90 good minutes and picked up a yellow card as Molde easily defeated a Viking team in free-fall. With the win, Molde move 2 points clear of basement-dwellers Viking and Tromsø.

Sandefjord - Rosenborg: 0 - 2

Lars Hirshfeld had little to do as Rosenborg moved into 1st place on the table (pending the outcome of the Stabæk - Brann game tonight)

Tromsø - Lyn: 1 - 2

Bernier played 90 and Ademolu came on for the last 45 as Tromsø suffered another defeat and remain tied for last place (although they lead Viking on goal difference). Kenny Stamatoulos was on the bench.

Start - Lillestrøm: 2 - 0

Start came out ahead in this hard-fought and entertaining match. Lillestrøm blew the opportunity to take the league lead, while Start moved into contention for the medal hunt with their 8th win in the past 9 games (league/cup/UEFA) after a horrible spring. Olivier Occéan came on in the 68th minute but seemed sluggish and nowhere near top form, and picked up an unecessary yellow for rough play.

Also yesterday, Vålerenga trounced Fredrikstad 5-1. Brann and Stabæk finish off round 19 tonight.

In division 1, Poz did not play as Haugesund took a strong 2-0 away win over Bryne. Not sure if he's injured as he was also not on the bench. Marco Reda did play 90 as Sogndal lost 2-1 in a close-fought match away to Løv-Ham.

Kevin DeSerpa and Stord/Moster are 3rd last in their section of division 2 after 20 of 26 rounds, but seem to be playing better lately.

Round 21 in Tippeliagen was played this weekend, and the Canadian of the round so far was definitely Sandro Grande in Molde. Sandro has had a tough season with many small injuries and setbacks, but has been healthy and finding his form in recent weeks. Yesterday he was named man of the match by TV2 as Molde defeated favourites Lillestrøm 2-0 at home. In this article (http://www.fxt.no/tippeligaen/molde/article748794.ece) Sandro points to his return to health as well as good cooperation with fellow midfielder Petter Rudi as reasons for his success. Molde coach Arild Stavrum and GM Tarje Nordstrand Jacobsen have both singled out Sandro as one of the players who has elevated his game and contributed to the club's recent improved play.

sandro_grande_270147c.jpg

On the other side of the pitch, Olivier Occéan's struggles continues as he came on as a sub for Lillestrøm in the 69. minute but was unable to have an impact on the game.

Full results for yesterday's slate in Tippeligaen:

24.09.2006	Molde-Lillestrøm	2-0

24.09.2006	HamKam-Lyn 1-0

24.09.2006	Stabæk-Fredrikstad	3-2

24.09.2006	Vålerenga-Start	1-0

24.09.2006	Sandefjord-Viking	3-2

24.09.2006	Tromsø-Brann 3-1
Other Canadian achievements had Patrice Bernier scoring a goal off a free kick and Stephen Ademolu picking up an assist in Tromsø's hard-fought win over Brann in the snow(!) at Alfheim Stadion. and round 24 in Division 1:
24.09.2006	Follo-Aalesund 3-3

24.09.2006	Løv-Ham-Sparta Sarpsborg	0-0

24.09.2006	Strømsgodset-Pors 3-1

24.09.2006	Bryne-Kongsvinger 2-0

24.09.2006	Hønefoss-Sogndal 4-0

24.09.2006	Hødd-Moss 2-1

24.09.2006	Manglerud/Star-Tromsdalen	4-2

24.09.2006	Bodø/Glimt-Haugesund 4-1

With the big loss, Marco Reda and Sogndal are out of the race for promotion to Tippeligaen, and Chris Pozniak and Haugesund are still in a dogfight to avoid relegation. Both canadians played from the start yesterday.

Ali Gerba and Odd Grenland host Lars Hirshfeld and Rosenborg Monday night.

Good for Grande.

He mentioned recently Norways physical playing style realy didn't sit well with him. Not quite his thing. It'll be a good measure of the man if he can overcome that difference, soilder on and make a good go of his time in the Tippel-a-gin-thingamabob-er.

Grande mentions in the article that part of his struggles early in his tenure with Molde was due to their (at the time) playing tactics: lots of long balls to Rob Friend. With the big target man gone Molde have turned to playing much more through the middle, and that seems to suit him pretty well.

edit: Grande does not actually name Friend in any of his quotes, but it's pretty evident to the casual observer that Molde play much more through the middle now than they did before.

Hirschfeld can't be far away from a place in the national team squad?

We'll know more in the next few days when the roster for our october 8 game against Jamaica is announce.

I can tell you that pretty much everyone here would like to see him back with the team and battling for that #1 spot with Sutton.

I see that someone from Tromsø has already updated you on the stellar performance by Stephen Ademolu in Tromsø's 3-1 home win against Fredrikstad yesterday. Ademolu, like the rest of the team, had a horrible 1st half, but he really was the man to ignite the team and lead them to a fantastic comback. Bernier was solid as usual. Tromsø are still last, but the bottom of the table is very close, and they have life.

Sandro Grande and Molde had a bad game (both Sandro and the rest of the team) as they lost 3-0 at home to Vålerenga. Molde are now in real danger of relegation, and will have to fight to stay in the top tier.

Ali Gerba was in the stands as Odd lost 1-0 at home to a resurgent Viking team. Gerba was being punished for breaking a team rule: he missed a team meeting and the start of a practise due to a cell phone conversation, something Norwegian teams in general take a very dim view of. Seems like this is the 2nd scandinavian coach Gerba has run afoul of.

Rosenborg play HamKam tonight.

Three rounds left in both Tippeligaen and Division 1, and one round left for division 2; here's the state of the nation

Tippeliga

Rosenborg	23	13	7	3	39-21	46

Brann 23	13	4	6	36-27	43

Lillestrøm	23	10	8	5	38-31	38

Vålerenga	23	10	5	8	35-26	35

Start 23	9	7	7	27-28	34

Stabæk 23	8	9	6	39-32	33

Lyn 23	9	5	9	30-31	32

Odd Grenland	23	7	8	8	28-31	29

Ham-Kam	23	7	6	10	32-31	27

Viking 23	7	5	11	24-31	26

Sandefjord	23	7	5	11	32-43	26

Fredrikstad	23	6	7	10	33-43	25

Molde 23	7	3	13	26-38	24

Tromsø 23	6	5	12	29-35	23
Round 24 will feature the most eagerly anticipated match of the year: Brann hosting Rosenborg. Both teams are solid all the way through, with plenty of quality on the bench to draw on. Lars will need to be on his toes in the RBK net, as Brann like to attack when at home, and are not afraid of shooting from distance. They have one player who has scored some beautiful goals from 20-25 yards: the scott Charlie Miller, who will most likely start on the right flank of Brann's 4-man midfield. Those of you with a decent internet access can see the match at http://webtv.tv2.no/webtv/fotball/ - the service only works in Internett Explorer and requires registration; the cost of NOK 50 is approximately equivalent to CAD$9. Kickoff for this particular match is 2:00pm EDT. The bottom of the table is of more interest to Canadians, perhaps. Molde has been struggling (an annual occurence, it seems), but Sandro Grande has been playing very well the second half of the season. Their remaining 3 games are: vs. HamKam (home) vs. Stabæk (away) vs. Sandefjord (home) HamKam are almost as inconsistent as Molde are, so this one is almost impossible to call. Stabæk are very tough at home, and I am afraid Molde will lose this. Sandefjord are horrible on the road, so this one should be a victory for Molde. The only question will be whether they have anything other than pride to play for by that time. From where I sit Molde are perhaps the most likely to be relegated. Two of Tromsø's three Canadians are also playing well. Patrice Bernier has had another strong season as the holding midfield player for the northern Norwegian team, while Stpehen Ademolu has found his place and form under new coach Steinar Nilsen. Their 3 remaining games are: vs. Lillestrøm (away) vs. Start (home) vs. Vålerenga (away) It's perhaps an even tougher schedule than Molde have - all three teams have a chance at a medal/UEFA cup place/Royal League place. Lillestrøm have not been as strong the second half of the season as they were the first, and Tromsø can win this if they play their best, but it is not likely. Start have been on fire the second half of the season and have moved into the medal hunt after been dead last for much of the spring. And Vålerenga are always a challenge at Ullevål and may have also have a medal to play for. I feel Tromsø have more quality than Molde, but may not be up to the challenge. Olivier Occéan has had a horrible season after starting off well the first few matches in the spring. It is unlikely he will get much playing time, as Lillestrøm coach Rössler will no doubt rely on players who are in form as they try to fend of the challenge from Start, Vålerenga and Stabæk for 3rd place. Young Nunez with Lyn has been playing with the junior squad and will not see any playing time with the seniors until the off-season, I imagine. Ali Gerba is definitely on the outs with Odd Grenland, and coach Sandstø has stated the team will not be extending the loan contract after the season is over. He'll be lucky to find a spot on the bench. Division 1
Strømsgodset 27	18	4	5	58-31	58

Aalesund 27	15	8	4	61-31	53

Bodø/Glimt 27	14	5	8	60-42	47

Bryne 27	13	8	6	49-42	47

Hønefoss BK 27	12	6	9	57-46	42

Hødd 27	4	6	17	26-53	18

Marco Reda has been a regular in the Sogndal defence, and the team still have a theoretical chance to pip Bodø/Glimt for the playoff place to play for promotion. First they will face a tough task as they play Bryne away this weekend.

Chris Pozniak has had a decent season with Haugesund, scoring 4 times to date. The team must consider the season a success as it was all about preserving their place in division 1 after being newly promoted from division 2. While they are not on safe ground yet, they have been playing well lately, and should end up in roughly the same position they are in now.

The situation was long looking pretty bleak for Stord/Moster and Kevin De Serpa, but recent results have brought them to safe ground. They are not out of the woods, and with a loss in the final round can still be relegated. They play away to Flekkerøy on Saturday, and will sevure a renewed contract in division 2 with a win.
