Canadians in Norway (Tippeligaen)

Recommended Posts

The Norwegian 1st division also kicks off on Sunday. A couple of the national papers released their preview of the division the past couple of days, and there seems to be general agreement that Haugesund will most likely be in the bottom half of the table but should be safe from relegation, while Sogndal should be fighting at the top and may even be strong enough to win promotion.

Sogndal and Marco Reda open their season away to Pors, while the 3 Canadians with Haugesund open at home to Follo.

Kenny Stamatopoulos and Patrice Bernier played the whole game and Stephen Ademolu came on at 62 min in a 3-1 loss at Molde. Sandro Grande was on the bench the whole game for Molde.

Kenny can't be faulted on any of the 3 goals as Tromsø's defense had a rather poor game. The game was marred by a fight; at 3-0, Tromsø's Ole Martin Årst scored with a Molde player down on the pitch due to injury. While it is likely Årst did not see the injured player, the Molde players were furious about what they thought was poor sportsmanship. In the subsequent melée, Molde captain Daniel Berg Hestad was given a direct red card.

Marco Reda received his 2nd yellow 40 minutes into a 3-1 Sogndal loss to Pors Grenland. At the time the score was 1-1. Sogndal had a 2nd player sent off at 71 minutes when the game was already lost.

Chris Pozniak played the whole game as Haugesund beat Follo 1-0. Neither of Haugesund's two other canadians saw playing time.

Rosenborg and Lillestrøm are playing the late game today. It is 2-1 for Lillestrøm at the half. Olivier Occéan scored LSKs 2nd goal on a error by Lars Hirschfeld in the RBK goal.

Great comeback by Rosenborg indeed! Lillestrøm went up to 3-1 early in the 2nd half before the team from Trondheim came roaring back. Great game, and it showed that these two teams can play!

Lars was at fault on OIivier's goal - he should have cut off the corner, but missed and the ball went straight to Occéan. Otherwise he was solid and could not have done much about the other two goals - especially the 3rd which was a beauty by Robert Koren.

Molde leads the league with 3 points after 1 game; Tromsø are last with 0 and all the other teams have 1.

Brann and Fredrikstad play Monday.

The Norwegian paper Dagbladet is first out of the gate with player rankings; they give a rating out of 8 for every player who sees more than 30 minutes of action.

Patrice Bernier gets a 5 and Kenny Stamatopoulos gets a 3 for Tromsø in their game with Molde. With 29 minutes on the pitch, Stephen Ademolu did not play enough for a rating.

In the Lillestrøm - Rosenborg matchup, Olivier Occéan gets a 6 and Lars Hirschfeld a 4.

You might have been asked this question before, but any idea on what kind of living guys like Pozniak or Reda make? Surely the money can't be great in second tier Norway, but I assume he's not shovelling driveways to make ends meet either. Any insight?

I'm really not sure; in general salaries in Norway are a fair bit higher than in Canada, but so are taxes. How much the Canadians make depends a bit on their tax status in Norway.

Off the top of my head, I would say the average salary in the Norwegian 1st division is around NOK 250K - in the neighbourhood of $50K. Neither Haugesund nor Sogndal have the most robust budgets in the division so I doubt the 3 Canadians with Haugesund are making much more than that.

Marco may be a little above that. I would guess he was making about double that in Denmark (after all, he was with a top tier team) and may be getting above average with Sogndal. On the other hand, he may have been quite motivated to return to Sogndal and I'm not sure how many takers there would have been for his services given his age and past injuries.

Soon it will be possible to check it out. In Norway, EVERYBODY's income tax return is posted on the net for anyone to look up for about 3 months after the tax deadline. If the Canadians file taxes in Norway, their returns will be on the net. If they don't file taxes in Norway, they've got a pretty sweet deal.

The Norwegian paper Dagbladet has done anther poll of coaches to determine who is the best 'keeper in Eliteserien (apparently it's no longer called Tippeligaen - I was a little behind the times...:D).

Each coach was asked to chose their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice, with the keepers getting one point for 3rd, 2 for 2nd and 3 for 1st.

Vålerenga's Icelandic international Arni Gautur Arason narrowly beat out Lars Hirschfeld 27 point to 26. (Lars' teammate Espen Johnsen was 3rd with 6 points).

Who each coach selected can be seen here: http://www.dagbladet.no/sport/2006/04/11/463455.html

On another note, NFF (the Norwegian soccer federation) is holding a disciplinary hearing today where they will examine the fight between Molde and Tromsø players after Ole Martin Årst scored with a Molde player down. Apparently both Kenny Stamatopoulos and Patrice Bernier were involved in the scuffle and are among the players in danger or receiving suspensions. Especially Kenny is on the bubble after TV replays showed him grabbing Molde-defender Matej Mavric by the hair behind the ref's back.

Regulations in Norway permit suspensions based on TV replays for incidents the ref did not see. Last season one suspension was handed out this way (to Bernt Hulsker of Vålerenga, one of the dirtiest players ever to don a pair of cleats)

NFF have confirmed that Molde captain Daniel Berg Hestad will be suspended 2 games for his red card in the Tromsø game. Berg Hestad is a midfielder, and this suspension may open the door for Sandro Grande to start in his place.

NFF declined to comment on the situation of the other players involved in the melée between Tromsø and Molde; this means there is still a chance Bernier and Stamotopoulos will be subject to disciplinary action. No date has been set for a decision.

Drakoula: what's your question? If it's got nothing to do with Canadians in Norwegian soccer, you can always ask it at http://www.soccer24-7.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=102 (I write on that forum as "Startfan abroad")

Patrice Bernier will not be subject to any follow-up discipline from the incidents during the Molde-Tromsø match.

Video replays, however, have shown an altercation between Kenny Stamatopoulous and Molde's Matej Mavric: as I wrote earlier, Kenny grabbed Mavric by the hair and pulled him down. Mavric took a swing at Kenny; not sure which came first. Those two and Tromsø's Benjamin Kibebe have been ordered to appear in front of the disciplinary committee and explain their actions before April 19. Any rulings would take place after such a hearing.

Marco Reda's red card has put his team in a tough spot to start the season. Reda's colleague in the central defence, Børre Stenslid, was also sent off after 2 yellow cards in the season opening loss to Pors Grenland.

Reda and Stenslid are both suspended for the home game against Tromsdalen on Monday. Normally this is a game Sogndal should win, but I'm not sure they have neough depth to cover the loss of both starting defenders.

Reda will also miss the following game away to Aalesund, the division favourites. It is possible Sogndal will stand with 0 pts after 3 games, and their ambitions for promotion will have taken a serious blow with the season barely begun.

Reda's red was not for two yellows, as previously reported. Although he did have a previous yellow, he was given a direct red for showing the linesman the finger, after he felt the refs missed a foul comitted against Sogndal striker Kim Rune Hellesund that caused him to miss a scoring chance. Reda claims he was only pointing at the linesman.

The second round in Norway will be played on Monday and Tuesday.

Patrice Bernier, Kenny Stamotopoulos and Stephen Ademolu and Tromsø play host to newly-promoted Stabæk on Monday. Expect Patrice to start as usual. Kenny's situation depends on the health of rival Knut Borch; if Borch is fit he'll play, especially since Kenny did not grab his chance to shine last week. That will probably be a game-day decision. Many Tromsø fans have beeen calling for Stephen Ademolu to play - he became a fan favourite with his effort in the UEFA cup last year - but he has yet to impress new coach Ivar Morten Normark. There may be some shakeups after last week's poor showing, however, so we'll see.

Tromsø should win this game.

Molde with Rob Friend back in the lineup visit Olivier Occéan's old team Odd Grenland. Since Molde captain and midfielder Daniel Berg Hestad is serving the first of a two-game suspension Sandro Grande may get an opportunity to start. Molde surprised everyone last week, not just by winning the game, but the way they played. However, they may be in over their heads here. Odd is very strong at home, and should win this.

Lars Hirschfeld and Rosenborg play host to last year's silver medalist Start also on Monday. This may be the game of the round, and will feature two well-organised teams that like to hang on to the ball and push forward Start are suffering from many injuries up front, and will be missing their two primary goal scoring threats - Stefan Bärlin and Todi Jònsson - but are still a threat on set-pieces. Start's midfield features two young stars: Kristofer Hæstad and Fredrik Strømstad, both of whom established themselves on the national team last year, and much of the play goes through them. After not scoring at all last year, Hæstad seems to have rediscovered his shot over the winter, scoring a couple of spectacular goals from outside the box in training matches, and Lars will have to be wary of this.

The smart money has Rosenborg winning this - they beat Start 3-0 at home last year, although Start returned the favour with a 5-2 drubbing in Kristiansand - but I am biased and think Start will prevail 3-2 [8D]

The Tuesday game features Olivier Occéan and Lillestrøm visiting Brann in Bergen. Brann are an enigmatic team - always very talented, but they seem to find unlikely ways to blowing it - but will still be favoured to win by some. In some ways, they are the Maple Leafs of Norwegian soccer - especially to their long-suffering and very loyal fans. Last year those two teams played an extremely entertaining match, won 6-1 by Brann. The play was much closer than the score indicates, but Lillestrøm will be looking for revenge. Last year Lillestrøm was undone by their lack of prescision in front of the net, and that is precisely why they went out and got Olivier. Look for a high-scoring draw.

This past Tuesday, FK Haugesund played a training match against local 4th division team Djerv 1919. Poz did not play, but Niki Budalic played left wing and Milan Kojic central defense in a 4-2-3-1 system. Budalic made a horrible back pass that lead to Djerv taking an early 1-0 lead, but made up for it by scoring the tying goal. He only played the first half. Milan Kojic played the whole game, and scored the 3-1 goal on a header in a corner situation.

Haugesund won 4-1.

Game day news

- Lars will start for Rosenborg

- Olivier will start for Lillestrøm

- Tromsø's homepage reports that Kenny and Patrice will start

Molde's homepage has no news but their supporters are speculating that Rob will start (makes sense since he is their best striker). None of the supporters are pushing for Sandro to start, and there is unsubstantiated gossip in their forum that Sandro had a bit of a snit after not getting in to the game last week. If there's any truth to that, and he is on the outs with coach Arild Stavrum already then he could be in for a long season on the bench or worse.

It seems like Grande doesn't have the best attitude when he has to spend some time on the bench.

That's not the best way to introduce yourself to a new team and coach... The Norwegian style is to emphasise team over individual, and Molde will rely heavily on team discipline to avoid relegation. If Grande wants to play, he better suck it up and get with the programme.
