Norwegain soccer players and club owners have managed something the NHL and it's players could not: avoid a strike. The two parties have agreed to accept some of the recommendations made by an arbiter and to continue negotations in good faith on the most contentious issue: salary insurance for players in case of career-ending injury.

There will then be a full slate of games this weekend:

28.05.2006 Viking-Odd Grenland 18:00

28.05.2006 Lillestrøm-Sandefjord 18:00

28.05.2006 Start-Stabæk 18:00

28.05.2006 Vålerenga-Molde 18:00

28.05.2006 Rosenborg-HamKam 18:00

28.05.2006 Brann-Lyn 20:00

29.05.2006 Fredrikstad-Tromsø 19:00

In Division 1, Haugesund visit Løv-Ham in Bergen and Sogndal visit Follo on Sunday. In Division 2, Stord/Moster visit Kopervik on Saturday.

Round 10 is complete.

Molde visited Vålerenga in Oslo, and the game started off well with chances at both ends. By the 23 minute mark, however, Vålerenga had a 2-0 lead, and while Molde did have some chances after that, the rest of the game was a bit of a snooze and the outcome was never in doubt. 2-0 was the final score.

Rob Friend picked up his 3rd yellow of the season, and will miss round 11. Since that will be the last game before the World Cup, this was Friend's last match in a Molde uniform, and unfortunately he ended his career with them with a bit of a whimper. Sandro Grande came on early in the 2nd half, but was not able to influence the game.

In Lillestrøm, the home team went out strong against upstart Sandefjord, but it was the visitors who took the lead after catching Lillestrøm off-guard with some smart and agressive play. Overall, Lillestrøm had the better of the play, but Sandefjord were more dangerous, and played a tactically sound and well-executed away game against superior opposition, and managed to take a 2-1 win. Olivier Occéan scored Lillestrøm's goal in injury time, but it was little more than a consolation.

In Trondheim, HamKam stood for the upset of the round as they took a well-deserved 3-0 win against home team Rosenborg. The result was a fair reflection of the match, as Rosenborg could not get anything to work. Lars Hischfeld was not at fault on any of the goals, but nor did he play his best game.

In the Monday game, Tromsø were visiting Fredrikstad in a matchup of the bottom two teams in the league. Kenny Stamatopoulos and Patrice Bernier started for Tromsø, and Stephem Ademolu came on before the 40-minute mark in what proved to be a wild game. It was a bit of a sloppy affair, with plenty of scoring chances and goals. In the end the home team prevailed 5-3, and Tromsø sit dead last in the league.

In Division 1, Marco Reda and Sogndal were visiting Follo. Sogndal showed they are a strong team this year, but are in desperate need of someone who can find the back of the net as they played to a 0-0 draw.

In Bergen, Chris Pozniak and Haugesund were visiting Løv-Ham, and came out hard and went to the break with a 1-0 lead. The home team took over the 2nd half, however, and the final result was 1-1.

In Division 2 on Saturday, Kevin De Serpa and Stord/Moster lost 3-1 away to Kopervik and are stuck near the bottom of the table after 7 rounds.

No Canadians on the pitch for Molde - Rob Friend was suspended and Sandro Grande stayed on the bench - as they won 1-2 away to HamKam.

Patrice Bernier and Kenny Stamatopoulos both played 90 and Stephen Ademolu came on with 10 minutes left as Tromsø won their first game at home this season, beating Olivier Occéan and Lillestrøm 2-1. Patrice played a strong second half.

Lars Hirschfeld and Rosenborg played to a 0-0 draw with league-leading Brann in a game they probably feel they should have won.

In Division 1, Marco Reda and Sogndal wasted opportunities as they were only able to draw 2-2 at home to a Manglerud/Star who were reduced to 10 men for most of the second half.

Haugesund once again gave up a lead and drew 1-1 to visiting Kongsvinger. Chris Pozniak played 90 and Milan Kojic came on in the 68th minute.

I'll try to get the numbers posted tonight or tomorrow morning - busy week at work!

The only thing left to play in Norway before the World Cup is the 2nd round of the cup on Wednesday and Thursday.

The teams go to the break with the following standings:

Brann 11 7 4 0 19-7 25

LSK 11 6 3 2 19-12 21

Odd 11 3 6 2 14-11 15

RBK 11 3 6 2 14-12 15

Sandefjord 11 4 3 4 12-14 15

Viking 11 3 5 3 9-9 14

Molde 11 4 2 5 12-14 14

Stabæk 11 2 7 2 15-13 13

VIF 11 3 4 4 11-12 13

FFK 11 3 4 4 15-20 13

Ham-Kam 11 3 3 5 14-14 12

Lyn 11 3 3 5 10-16 12

Start 11 2 5 4 9-13 11

Tromsø 11 2 3 6 10-16 9
Still only 6 points separate 3rd and 14th, and the fall season will be very exciting. Even Brann and Lillestrøm have been showing signs of vulnerability lately, and any of the other teams can catch one or both of them with a good run. 3 years ago Rosenborg came back from 10 points behind at the break to win the championship. Division 1:
Aalesund 11 9 1 1 30-9 28

Strømsgodset 11 8 2 1 20-8 26

Bryne 11 5 6 0 20-11 21

Bodø/Glimt 11 6 2 3 25-16 20

Løv-Ham 11 5 3 3 14-11 18

Sogndal 11 5 3 3 17-15 18

Kongsvinger 11 4 4 3 11-14 16

Moss 11 4 2 5 19-16 14

Hønefoss BK 11 3 5 3 17-14 14

Sparta Sarpsborg	11 4 2 5 15-18 14

Tromsdalen 11 3 3 5 17-19 12

Pors Grenland 11 3 2 6 14-21 11

Haugesund 11 2 4 5 12-13 10

Follo 11 2 2 7 18-26 8

Manglerud Star 11 1 4 6 13-32 7

Hødd 11 0 3 8 6-25 3

It does not look like Sogndal will challenge for promotion this year, and Haugesund need to start winning at home if they want to avoid promotion.

No surprises in the Norwegian cup today. Molde, Tromsø, Rosenborg, Sogndal and Haugesund all joined Lillestrøm in the 3rd round. No stats have been published yet for the majority of matches; I'll post info about the Canadians when it becomes available.

One exception: neither Sandro Grande nor Rob Friend were on the pitch or the bench for Molde.

On a related note: Niki Budalic has been told by FK Haugesund that he is not in their future plans. He is among 8 players who are not in the team's plans this year - some of those due to long-term injury - and Haugesund are looking to improve the squad when the transfer window opens July 1.

http://www.h-avis.no/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060607/SPORT/106070025/1062/SPORT

The article doesn't say it directly, but it makes it sound like Budalic is being let go on a free transfer.

Did a bit more digging about Budalic:

http://www.h-avis.no/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060531/SPORT/105310015/1062/SPORT

Budalic was operated for an injury (not specified in the article) and is just starting to train again. However, Norwegian teams are only permitted two players from outside the EU on the pitch or bench, and unfortunately for Nikki, those two spots are taken by Chris Pozniak and Paolo Dos Santos, both of whom are regular starters. (Canadian Milan Kojic has EU citizenship - Poland, I believe). As a result, management have decided to let him go.

No player ratings from the cup games, but the club websites have all posted stats now.

Lars had a pretty easy game in the Rosenborg net as they defeated Steinkjær 4-0.

Tromsø featured Kenny in net and Patrice as usual controlling the midfield as they took a rather controlled 3-0 victory against Hammerfest. Stephen Ademolu saw some action as a 2nd half sub.

Haugesund had Chris Pozniak in the starting 11 as usual as they took a well-deserved 2-0 win against 2nd division Askøy. Once again, Haugsund revealed, though, that they have the talent to control a game, but sorely lack a quality goal scorer.

Sogndal had the only home game of the "Canadian" teams, and they used it to full advantage routing Årdal 5-0. Marco Reda was solid in defence as usual.

Molde had the largest margin of victory of all clubs in the 2nd round, defeating KIL/Hemne 11-1. Rob Friend did not dress for the match, which is not surprising given his imminent departure. More surprising is the fact the Sandro Grande did not dress either; there is no mention on the Molde website of why this might be.

Ali Gerba's exile in the stands at Göteborg may be over soon; Odd Grenland are negotiating with IFK for a loan deal for striker for the rest of the season. Apparently Olivier Occéan has recommended Odd to his countryman, and Gerba is interested in playing in Norway. All that remains is for the clubs to agree to terms.

The loan agreement would include an option for a permanent transfer.

And now it's a done deal: http://fotball.fvn.no/eliteserien/article58421.ece

Yes, Sundsvall was the correct club. From what I can make out, Gerba landed in coach Arne Erlandsen's doghouse and couldn't get out. The change of scenery will hopefully be good for him.

Also today, the 3rd round of the Norwegian cup was announced. All games are scheduled to be played on Wednesday, July 5, and the ones involving Canadians are:

Follo - Molde

Stabæk - Sogndal

Rosenborg - Raufoss

Mandalskameratene - Odd Grenland

FK Haugesund - IK Start

Bodø/Glimt - Tromsø

Harstad - Lillestrøm

Reports out of Tromsø have the team looking for a new keeper when the transfer window reopens on July 1. First-choice keeper Knut Borch has twice been injured this season, after just coming back from missing nearly a whole year. Kenny Stamatopoulos has stood in his place, but while he has not been terrible, nor has he impressed either coach Ivar Morten Normark or the local fans and media.

There is no credible third choice at the moment, but there is no word whether the team is looking for someone to sit on the bench when Kenny is in net and Borch recovering, or if they are looking for a potential first choice keeper.

The Norwegian 2nd division is continuing to play through the WC, and section 3 kicked off their 10th round yesterday which concludes tomorrow.

Kevin De Serpa and Stord/Moster continue to struggle and were unable to hold onto an early 1-0 lead against visitors Fyllingen. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, and the Canadian and his teammates remain mired in 2nd last place with 6 points from 10 matches.

Unavoidable delay...I was out of town for the long weekend visiting the in-laws. I missed the matches, I'm afraid (damn!) - although I did manage to get in the QFs - but here are the stats:

Molde - Stabæk: 1-3.

- No Friend, no Grande in evidence for Molde. No surprise about the former, no news on the team homepage about the latter.

Viking - Rosenborg: 1-3

- deserved win by the visitors; the margin could easily have been bigger.

Lars Hirshfeld played for RBK

Start - Tromsø:

- Tromsø were lucky, I tell you! Lucky! Start wasted plenty of chances, and returning hero Sigurd Rushfeld scored the equaliser within 20 minutes of being subbed in. Damn. Both teams are still struggling at the bottom of the table. Kenny Stamatopoulos was directly at fault in Start's goal, and has not been convincing in the Tromsø net. Stephen Ademolu was not on the bench for Tromsø.

Follo - Molde

- Molde lost 3-2 after extra time. Friend and Grande are both suffering from niggling injuries and did not play

Harstad - Lillestrøm

- Olivier Occéan scored twice as Lillestrøm won easily 5-1

Rosenborg - Raufoss

- Lars was in goal as Rosenborg struggled to win 2-1 in extra time

Mandalskam. - Odd Grenland

- Ali Gerba started for Odd but it did not help as they were subject to the upset of the round in a 4-1 loss to the Division 2 team

Today's matches were:

Bodø/Glimt - Tromsø

- Kenny and Patrice both started, but Tromsø were upset by Bodø/Glimt 4-2 in extra time

Haugesund - Start

- the most dramatic match of the round, which was not decided until both teams had attempted 7 penalty kicks after extra time decided nothing. Chris Pozniak was the hero - scoring the opening goal after about 5 minutes - and the goat - missing the deciding penalty - as Start move on to the 4th round.
