Canadians in Norway (Tippeligaen)

Recommended Posts

Round 7 kicks off in Norway with one game Friday and the rest on Saturday. This means they are past the 1/4 mark of the season, and some trends are starting to emerge.

12.05.2006 Vålerenga-Lillestrøm 18:00

13.05.2006 Sandefjord-Brann 16:00

13.05.2006 Stabæk-Viking 18:00

13.05.2006 Molde-Fredrikstad 18:00

13.05.2006 HamKam-Start 18:00

13.05.2006 Odd Grenland-Lyn 18:00

13.05.2006 Tromsø-Rosenborg 20:00
Olivier Occéan must be starting to feel the pressure of his goal drought, but as long as the team keep winning, coach Uwe Rösler will give him the time he needs to find the net. Lillestrøm will face a tough match tomorrow, though as they travel to Oslo to face a troubled and desperate Vålerenga. The defending gold medalist have been the biggest disappointment so far this season and need a win to keep in touch with the leading teams and have any hope of defending their title. This is a traditional "hate derby" featuring the two loudest and most active groups of suppporters in the country. Division 1 has a full slate on Saturday (round 6) and the matches featuring Canadians are:
13.05.2006 Sparta Sarpsborg-Sogndal 18:00

13.05.2006 Moss-Haugesund 18:00

Finally, in Division 2, Kevin De Serpa and Stord/Moster are away to Klepp for a round 5 matchup on Saturday. Stord/Moster are last in Section 3 with 1 point and a -10 goal differential. Klepp have 2 points and are one of the teams Stord/Moster need to beat if they hope to avoid relegation.

Viking defender Abelsson is pretty pissed at Friend, and felt the big Canadian was out to get him. Abelsson needed several stitches on his eyebrow after the game. Viking coach Tom Prahl was red-carded for his vehement protests when Friend planted his elbow and got away scott-free.

Finally got around to watching the game and I was really impressed with Friend. He really throws himself around out there. I wish I could've understood the complaining the coach was doing though. Not sure he was specifically out to get Abelsson as it seemed it didn't matter who he was going up against, Rob would go in full boar. Fun to watch.

He should've had a goal if it wasn't for a lucky block by the defender around the 60' mark.

He's been playing really well the last 2-3 games, but the bounces have not been going his way. If nothing else, he uses his size and strength so well that he creates lots of room for the rest of the Molde attack. He will get a goal sooner or later, though.

As for the issue with Abelsson; that was a 2-way street. Seemed like the two of them were having a pretty good battle out there all game. I'm sure Friend had a few bruises to show for it as well.

Lillestrøm got a head start on round 7 today, when they visited a desperate Vålerenga team in Oslo. It was a game that typefied the season so far; Lillestrøm came out strong and took an early 1-0 lead on a lovely play by Maltese international Michael Mifsud then continued to dominate. In the second half the defending gold medalists came on stronger, and should perhaps have had a penalty near the end, but Lillestrøm held on for the 1-0 win and solidified their hold on 1st place.

Once again, Olivier Occéan played the whole game for Lillestrøm, but his drought continues. His ratings were:

- Dagbladet: 4

- TV2 / Nettavisen: 5

- 100%: 5

- VG: 4

Round 7 completes tomorrow.

Tromsø have Patrice Bernier fit again for the game against Rosenborg at Alfheim Stadion in Tromsø. This creates as bit of a dilemma for coach Normark, as Bernier has been Tromsø's most consistent player this season, but when he missed the last game due to injury, the team played their best game of the season and got their first win and the coach will not want to mess with a winning combination. Either way Stephen Ademolu will start for the home team, but Kenny Stamatopoulos will not. Lars Hirschfeld is a sure bet to start in net for a Rosenborg team that are slowly rounding into form. It's a tough match for both teams, and these derbys are often exiting.

Molde host Fredrikstad and both teams will be looking to build on a decent start to the season. Molde will feel they deserved a better fate in their loss to Viking last round, while Fredrikstad took their first win with an impressive game against Vålerenga. Rob Friend will start for the home team, and will have another tough battle against defensive behemouth Raio Piroja. Sandro Grande did not play last round due to an undisclosed injury, and did not play in the cup game on Wednesday either. There is no news on either the Molde FK website or the lokal paper, but it seems he will not play tomorrow either.

Apologies for the delay in the recap of round 7; something strange was going on and I couldn't get on this board...

Anyway, Rob Friend did indeed end his scoring drought and did it with style. Molde demolished Fredrikstad 4-0, a scoreline that could easily have been much larger. Friend was involved in 3 of the goals: he drew the penalty that gave the home team 2-0, and scored the 3rd and 4th himself. His first goal was a gimme: a Molde shot hit the post and rolled leisurely along the goal line; Friend was in the right place to tap it in. The second was more typical of him as a cross found his head in the box and he made no mistake steering it in. Sandro Grande was back on the bench for Molde, but did not make it on the pitch.

In the other Tippeligaen game featuring Canadians, Tromsø hosted Rosenborg. Patrice Bernier and Stephen Ademolu were both on the pitch for the home team, and Lars Hirschfeld played for Rosenborg. It was a close and tense, although not particularly well-played game. Tromsø took a 1-0 lead to the half, but Rosenborg equalised for a 1-1 end result. Patrice played the whole game while Ademolu had to leave early in the 2nd half with a minor injury.

In division 1, Sogndal and Marco Reda were involved in a wild one. They went up 2-0 away to Sparta Sarpsborg, only to see the home team come storming back to tie. They did, however, manage to score just before the whistle and take an important 3-2 away win. Marco picked up an early yellow card, which may have influenced his play as he did not play with his usual authority.

Haugesund also picked up an important away point, drawing 1-1 at Moss. Chris Pozniak played the whole game for Haugesund. Niki Budalic was on the bench for the first time this season, but did not see any action.

The fun one here for Canadians is Molde travelling to Lillestrøm. Now that Friend has ended his scoring drought, the onus is on Olivier Occéan to do the same.

In division 1, Sogndal are home to Løv-Ham while Haugesund host local rivals Bryne. Kevin De Serpa and Stord/Moster don't play again until May 22, when they host Start 2 (reserves) in division 2.

Pregame May 16:

Lillestrøm hosting Molde: Occéan and Friend both on the pitch, Grande on the bench for Molde. Both Friend and Grande will be suspended next game if they pick up a yellow today.

Rosenborg hosting Odd: Hirschfeld starting for Rosenborg. Rival Espen Johnsen was left of the national team squad for the first time in about 3 years when it was announced yesterday. He is reportedly looking for a new club to get playing time again.

Brann hosting Tromsø: tough game for Tromsø against the red-hot Brann team. Bernier and Ademolu both on the field for Tromsø; Patrice will be suspended next round if he picks up a yellow today. Kenny Stamatopoulos is on the bench.

Haugesund hosting Bryne: Pozniak on the field, neither Budalic or Kojic in the squad today - no word on why yet.

Sogndal hosting Løv-Ham: Marco Reda starting as usual.

I see from the standing that Vålerenga are last. Aren't they one of the biggest clubs in Norway? Must be pretty surprising...

They, along with Rosenborg and Brann, have the most robust economies. They're not the only negative surprise this year. Start, Viking and Lyn have also struggled in the early going. Those four were expected to fight for medals, not to fight off relegation. 3 of the 4 did win today - unfortunately (from my point of view) Vålerenga were one of them as they beat Start in Kristiansand... :(

Anyway, on to the Canadians...

The anticipated battle of Canadian strikers was a bit of a disappointment - for Rob Friend. After scoring his first two goals of the season laast round, many expected him to continue his good form. Instead he picked up an injury in an early duel with Lillestrøm keeper Müller, and had to be subbed out after 33 minutes. By that point it was already 2-0 for Lillestrøm.

Olivier Occéan had been struggling with a goal drought of his own aftre scoring in each of the first 2 games of the season. As with Friend, the coach showed patience in his Canadian striker and Olivier repaid him in spades, scoring the 1st and 3rd goals today. Lillestrøm took a 3-0 lead to the half, and the second half was pretty boring as both teams lost interest in the game, it appeared.

Sandro Grande came on as a 2nd half sub for Molde, but did not play enough to merit a rating.

(Olivier Occéan scores; from Dagbladet)

Tromsø were in tough today, visiting Brann who have been in great form so far this season. Patrice Bernier and Stephen Ademolu both started the game for the visitors and things looked good early when Tromsø striker Ole Martin Årst put his team up 1-0. Shortly after that, however, Tromsø had a player sent off for 2 yellows, and the remaining match was extremely one-sided as Brann went on attack after attack. Ademolu was subbed out at the half for a more defensive-minded player, but that did not help as only a superb Knut Borch in the Tromsø net kept the game close. But Brann were still able to pull out a 2-1 win.

In Trondheim, Rosenborg were favourites against surprise team Odd Grenland. The visitors, however, took an early lead on a free kick. Lars Hirschfeld was out of position on the kick, and must take the blame for the goal. He had precious little to do the rest of the game, which ended 1-1.

In Division 1, Marco Reda and Sogndal were given a lesson in effective, counter-attacking soccer by visiting Løv-Ham who scored virtually all their chances and held the home team at bay for a 3-1 win.

In Haugesund, the Chris Pozniak and the home team were hosting one of the division favourites in local rivals Bryne. It was a fairly close match, but Bryne were able to pull out a 2-1 win with a late goal. Neither Kojic nor Budalic were on the bench for Haugesund.

Quick summary: they haven't decided, they're testing them to see how they perform. Also talks about how the NFF doesn't want Norwegian soccer to be a middle man, looking for international players to buy and sell.

Notodden are currently in the 2nd division, but have some capital behind them and are ambitious and hoping to take the team all the way to Tippeligaen.

The article about Mayard in Varden talks about his ambition to use playing time with 2nd division club Pors (he was tested by Notodden but not offered a contract) in Norway as a springboard to bigger things; given that Mayard has been capped by Haiti, any discussion of his career should probably move to the world soccer section.

Abraham Francois was testing with Notodden in the off-season, but is not on their roster presently; there's no mention of where he might be at present.

Round 9 in Tippeligaen this weekend:

21.05.2006 Sandefjord-Fredrikstad 18:00

21.05.2006 Molde-Start 18:00

21.05.2006 Tromsø-Viking 18:00

21.05.2006 Stabæk-Lillestrøm 18:00

21.05.2006 Odd Grenland-Brann 18:00

21.05.2006 Lyn-Rosenborg 20:00

22.05.2006 HamKam-Vålerenga 19:00

Molde host struggling Start in a matchup of two teams playing contrary to expectations. Molde have been playing very well, and are much higher up on the table than was expected. Start, on the other hand, have struggled, and instead of fighting to defend their silver medal are sitting second last. Based on recent results, this should be an easy game for Molde. There is an injury factor that makes this less predictable, however. Rob Friend pulled a hamstring last match against Lillestrøm and has not been able to practise since. He is questionable. For Start the news is better. Despite the fact that midfield star Kristofer Hæstad will likely miss this match, the rest of the team is returning from injury and rounding into form. The team plays a high-tempo, technical style well suited to the excellent pitch at Aker Stadion. This could be fun.

Tromsø and Viking mix it up in a matchup of early-season disappointments. Both teams, however, are playing better of late, and are starting to show the quality they possess. Tromsø are injury-free, and Patrice Bernier and Stephen Ademolu will likely both start.

In Olso, Rosenborg and Lyn hook up in another matchup of teams who have not lived up to expectations. Rosenborg have struggled to find their offensive rhythm; some say it is because coach Høgmo has tried too many combinations up front. There will be another new combination this week as Torstein Helstad will miss the match with an injury and Daniel Bråthen returns to the lineup. Lars Hirshfeld will start in net again; he has been solid, but has not blown anyone away.

Finally, Lillstrøm visit Nadderud Stadium in Bærum to play Stabæk. Olivier Occéan played a huge game against Molde last week, and LSK-fans will be hoping for the "ketchup-effect" from the big Canadian. Stabæk are another team who have exceeded expectations, but they'll have their hands full with the league leaders.

In Division 1, Haugesund travel to Sarpsborg in the southeast to meet Sparta Sarpsborg. Sogndal head north along the coast to meet Hødd. Both games are on Sunday.

On Monday, Kevin De Serpa and Stord/Moster host the Start reserves in Division 2 section 3. Given that Start are away on Sunday, it is unlikey many players from the main team will join the reserves, who will then field a team cosisting primarily of teenagers. It may be an opportunity for Stord to put some space between themselves and the bottom 2 teams in the section.

Friend played the whole game and Grande was subbed in the 2nd half as Molde tied Start 1-1.

Good luck with your illness Start Fan!!! We'll wait for your always appreciate weekly report.

Tromsø hosted Viking in a battle of struggling teams, and this game showed why they are both struggling. It was a pretty lacklustre contest, and while Tromsø did have the better chances, it came to a fitting 0-0 end. Patrice Bernier played from the start as usual, and Stephen Ademolu came on just past the 61 minute mark. This game saw all 3 canadians in action as Tromsø keeper Knut Borch fractured a bone in his foot early in the 1st half, and Kenny Stamatopoulos came on and did a solid job in relief.

In Molde, Start were visting. The visitors, last year's silver medallists, have had a horrible start to the season, but have played better of late. Things were going their way when they took an early 1-0 lead on a somewhat flukey goal, and seemed to have the game well in hand. Molde withstood the onslaught, however, and were able to grab the equaliser about 10 seconds after time added had expired. Rob Firend played the whole game and picked up an assist on the tying goal (damn him!) and Sandro Grande came on to start the 2nd half.

In Bærum, Stabæk were hosting Lillestrøm. This eneded up being an end-to-end battle, with Lilletrøm twice taking the lead, only to have Stabæk come back to tie. It ended 2-2 and Olivier Occéan played 64; not his best game, but he did pick up an assist on the first goal.

Finally, in Oslo, Lyn were hosting Rosenborg, and really took the game to them in the first half. Only a spectalular Lars Hischfeld - playing his best game of the season so far - kep the visitiors close at 1-0. In the second half, a different Rosenborg team came on the pitch, and they were more like their old selves taking a strong 2-1 away win. The winning goal was scored by Frode Johnsen on a 25-metre shot that showed why clubs for across the continent have been trying to pry him away from Rosenborg.

In Division 1, Marco Reda played a strong game as Sogndal visited Hødd and came away with a 3-1 win.

In Sarpsborg, Haugesund let in another late goal, as Sparta Sarpsborg scored 5 minutes before time to take the game 1-0. Chris Pozniak played the whole game, and Nikki Budalic was on the bench.

In Division 2 today, Kevin De Serpa scored his team's second goal on a pk as Stord/Moster took a 2-0 lead to the half against Start 2. The visitors came storming back, however, and left with a 2-2 draw.

There is a brief pause in Tippeligaen play as Wednesday is an international date and Norway is hosting Paraguay in Oslo. Division 1, however, has a full slate on Thursday with Sogndal hosting Hønefoss and Haugesund hosting Bodø Glimt.

The brief pause may be longer than anticipated; the players association and the league are negotiating a new contract and talks have broken down. There is a midnight Friday strike deadline.

There are two main sticking points: the players currently do not have a standard insurance policy protecting their incomes in case of career-ending injury - and they want one! - and the players want the right to select their own footwear regardless of which equipment manufacturer is sponsoring the club. Apparently there are other issues as well, but these are the two the media is focussing on.

In case of a strike, Tippeligaen and Division 1 would be affected.

26 ounce flu? Oy, those can be nasty.

I wish! It would have been a lot more fun beforehand :D

An update on the keeper situation in Tromsø: Knut Borch did not break a bone in his foot has was originally reported, so it looks like Kenny Stamatopoulos' chance will be short-lived. Borch will probably not be ready for this weekend, but likely the next game after that.

There was a full slate of games in Division 1 today.

In Sogndal, Marco Reda and the home team played to a 1-1 draw with Hønefoss in a pretty uneventful match. Both teams need to show more than this if they are to be serious contenders for promotion.

In Haugesund, there was a matchup of teams that were separated by 2 divisions last year as Bodø-Glimt came to visit. Chris Pozniak started as usual for Haugesund, but the home team were overmatched from the start as Bodø Glimt owned the play in both halves. Haugesund were dangerous on the counter, however, and went to the half with a 1-0 lead. In the end, the onslaught proved to great, and Haugesund let in another late goal to draw 1-1. With only 8 points from 9 matches, Haugesund will soon have to start worrying about relegation.
