The Ref
Blatter was a crook but also a visionary. He rightly said that the future of soccer is in women soccer. Maybe he used the word football. rkomar
Ozzie_the_parrot
Perhaps worth bearing in mind that he also suggested that the kit used by female players should be modified to help boost the popularity of the women's game. Dick Howard was literally laughed out loud at by everybody else in the studio when he tried to defend that posture when asked about it on a Rogers Sportsnet (?) soccer broadcast. Unnamed Trialist
Barça has paid half a million euros to sign Ewa Pajor from Wolfsburg, a team we draw a lot of players from. The salary restructuring will likely see key players from Barça move on (Putellas, possibly, Caldentey perhaps), maybe even going to Gotham with coach Giráldez. The problem with having so many stars is that no one club can pay for them all, you get into a bidding war to keep them, what really needs to happen is for the money for the elite players to be spread around between those 15-20 elite clubs in the world. Real Madrid, which failed in Champions League this year, has signed striker Alba Redondo from Levante. A national team player, I think she is excellent, her reputation affected by playing for a club with a lower profile. Saudis may also bid given they're already building for 2034 and Aramco just signed a sponsorship deal for US$100m/yr with FIFA. But announcement is set for next year which doesn't give latecomers too much time. narduch

red card
After losing 4-3 to Liverpool midweek, Hayes said the title race is over for Chelsea. With 3 matches left, they were down 6 points with 2 matches in hand vs Man City. But they would lose the tiebreaker as they were down 7 in goal differential. On Sunday, Arsenal came back in added time to defeat Man City away 2-1. Then Chelsea played Bristol City.... Canuckia

red card
3 starters left Argentina's camp. "With a broken heart and thousands of dreams disappearing little by little. May the next generations enjoy and be happy running after the football, as we were sometime ago.” During training sessions they received a ham and cheese sandwich and a banana. Argentine FA told them they won’t be paid for the friendlies against Costa Rica because the games are at home in Buenos Aires. Maybe the FA needs to place a call to Messi. https://apnews.com/article/argentina-womens-players-quit-pay-dispute-c51fd5b55383018f297bf954a9b3242a narduch
red card
Some people say they like women's football because there is no shithousery. But this action is better than anything seen in men's football. Friendly between Morocco & DR Congo which Morocco won 3-2. Red card was for ankle kick. Then came the left hook. red card
Canada moves up 1 to #8 in FIFA rankings. Olympic group foes France moved up by 1 to #2, their best ever ranking. Colombia moved up by 1 to #22 while New Zealand was unchanged at #28. Germany moved past USA. Korea DPR gained a spot, thereby easing the Netherlands out of the top ten for the first time in 7 years. The most striking progress was achieved by North Macedonia (123rd, up 12), in the wake of their solid wins over Latvia and Moldova. narduch, Olympique_de_Marseille and Trois Reds 2
red card
Copa 71 is now available to watch on CBC Gem. It premiered at TIFF last year. https://gem.cbc.ca/copa-71 It's a Serena/Venus Williams produced doc about a forgotten moment in history. It tells the story of the non-FIFA sanctioned 1971 Women’s World Cup, held in Mexico City and Guadalajara. The tournament was actually the second such event organized by the Federation of Independent European Female Football; the first was held a year earlier, in Italy. The 71 final between Mexico and Denmark was played in front of 112k. It came to be because of Mexican media company Televisa along with Martini Rossi as the sponsor. Televisa got around FIFA threats to fine FMF for using stadiums because they owned Azteca and Jalisco Stadiums. NY Times headline for their story on the tourney was: SOCCER GOES SEXY SOUTH OF BORDER: https://www.nytimes.com/1971/06/27/archives/soccer-goes-sexy-south-of-border-womens-world-cup-aimed-at-the-2.html Canuckia and narduch

You can't call Bonmatí, who I love as a player, no 2 this century, when she's only been at the top for about 2 years. Or maybe slightly less. It is just a recent indicator. I find it erroneous to not take into account an entire career. rkomar

red card
This is from a 16 year old writer for a Atlanta United site. But it has gained traction and there has been some scuttlebutt about this in the past year. It may just mean MLS Women NP rather than a D1 league. But given USSF hands out D1 status on largely commercial standards, it would be super easy for MLS to get a D1 league. narduch

narduch
Wow. MLS won't be happy until all soccer in the US runs through them. The hilarious thing about this is the the 3 Canadian MLS teams wouldn't even be allowed to join this league if they wanted.
