Worldwide women's news

Is there someone better?  The better avenue would be hiring someone to be responsible for the management and development of the women's game in the country.  We bundle that with coaching the team and they are two very, very different things.

It is called multitasking.

Why not have a massage therapist coach the team?  Or your surgeon do his taxes?  Or the janitor cook your meal?

Being responsible for developing the women's game (beyond 23 players) and being a great coach have about as much in common.  They're actually biased and even diametrically opposed in some way's too.  Had we done it 40 years ago we wouldn't be in the mess we are now.

Christine Exeter is now the captain of the Jamaican Women's National Team ( Reggae Girlz). From Pickering, Ontario, Exeter represented Canada in the 2012 U-20 WWC hosted by Japan. Currently, Exeter and the Reggae Girlz are preparing for a semi-final match in the Caribbean Zone (CFU)  qualifying tournament in which 3 of the top 4 nations will qualify for the 2016 CONCACAF  Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

She probably realized her odds of playing there were much better than here.  I don't see much unusual about this, we've had a number of Canadian women play for weakly-ranked Caribbean countries including Jamaica.  In the CONCACAF's last year they had another Canadian goalkeeper and a couple Americans as well.  When we think of the country we think of quality because of their men's team but their women's team is a hot mess.  They were disbanded from 2008-2014, are 67th ranked, and have never really beat a quality team.  What they've done to their women is actually pretty shameful and if not for Bob Marley's daughter they might still be a footnote in a history book.

Iran women’s soccer team captain to miss tournament after husband refuses to let her travel

Niloufar Ardalan, 30, is married to sports journalist Mahdi Toutounchi, who under Iranian law has the right to keep his wife from leaving the country. His reason for keeping Ardalan at home, according to reports, is that he did not want Ardalan to miss their 7-year-old son’s first day of school on Sept. 23.

The Danish league isn't much better outside Brøndby and Fortuna Hjørring who have won everything for 15 years.

Brøndby only has five national players, the other 17 are non-national domestics.  They got an easy opening in the 32 last year in CL, in the 16 met a team who needed penalties to get past Sparta Praha in their opener, and then had their moment and upset Linköping in the quarter.  Despite getting a fraction of the opportunities (shots 48-19, corners 17-6) they went through to the semis where they got annihilated 13-0 home and away by Frankfurt.  It was Frankfurt's biggest win of the tournament.  Other than the final 2-1 win over PSG, their toughest opponent was BIIK Kazygurt of Kazakhstan in the opening round (6-2 aggregate).

FC Twente of the Netherlands was the only one of the eight teams from the qualification phase that was not eliminated in the round of 32.  The Bundesliga-leading Bayern team they knocked out started Behringer, Lisa Evans, Leupolz, Kristen Mewis, Leonie Maier, Vivienne Miedema, and Norwegian and Finnish internationals,  Twente does not have a foreign player and only a handful on the Dutch team, and just two of whom started their crucial match against Canada this summer.  They also pushed runner's up PSG last year in the 32 but went out on two one goal losses.

To squeeze consistent results like that they must have one hell of a program.

Women's football in Macedonia has a very low profile, and at the moment the national team is terrible.  However, there is one positive, Natasa Andonova (21 years old), helped her Swedish 1st div club, FC Rosengard, win the title with 3 goals in a 5-0 victory.

She has been playing with Macedonia since she was 15 years old and has 27 caps with 12 goals which is quite incredible for such a poor team.

[ 1 ] The Czech Republic women had an interesting 2015 with a second place finish in group C of the 2015 Cyprus Cup: which included a 1 - 0 victory over South Africa --  South Africa just recently qualified for their second consecutive Olympic women soccer  tournament ( 2012 Great Britain, 2016 Rio) . Though  the Czechs did have  a tough 6 - 2 loss to the Matildas  in  a pre-world cup friendly played in March 2015.

[ 2 ] The first leg of the Champions League Round of 32 match between Twente  and Bayern Munich, played in the Netherlands, had good attendance (6512 people) and lots of atmosphere.

[ 3 ] Natasa Andonova was part of a mass exodus of core players out of Turbine Potsdam at the conclusion of the 2014/15 Frauen Bundesliga season. First Julia Simic mid-season then in the off season: Genoveva  Anonma, Natasa Andonova, Pauline Bremmer, Lisa Evans, & Wang Fei. Former Potsdam player Ada Hegerberg  is critical of both the culture in Potsdam and the coach Bernd  Schroder.

Slavia Prague knocked out a side Zvezda Perm (Russia) 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.  So far it has been an incredible run for Slavia, despite being only an amateur side.

Qualified teams for the quarter-finals;

Slavia Prague, Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Frankfurt, Wolfsburg, Bresica, Barcelona, Rosengard.

Player to watch out for:  Wang  Shuang . She was with China ( the Steel Roses )  in the 2015 WWC but she didn’t play in the opening game against CANWNT and only came off the bench for small minutes for China’s remaining four games of the tournament. But since then, the 20 year old mid-fielder has raised her game and recently scored a brace in China’s 2- 1 victory over England ( Oct 23, 2015) and yesterday scored  China’s  game winning goal  to  end the USWNT’s 104 match undefeated-at-home streak.

Ladie Cup. Tournoi Five. Paris Football Week. Lesfeminines.fr TDO Sport.

Well this is interesting. Jonelle Filigno's picture is being used to promote the Ladie 5 Cup :an amateur ( open to the general public ) football  tournament in Paris which is part of Paris Football Week ( May 13- 16, 2016 ) a  4 day festival promoting football  to Parisiennes prior to France hosting the UEFA EURO 2016 ( men ) in June. Don't believe Filigno has any other involvement in this beyond her photo.

[ 2 ] .Later in the evening: an  International friendly between the  Seattle Reign vs Arsenal Ladies ( NWSL  vs FA WSL). The Seattle Reign, as the hosts, are also planning to stream the game, 7:30 pm PT/ 10:30 ET,   May 26, 2016   I don't think  the Seattle  Reign will win this game ( meaning a draw or a loss). They have  some significant injuries, and their  form lately has not been very good , in addition,  Arsenal Ladies are a pretty deep team.
