Jason De Vos

Recommended Posts

I have been meaning to pose this question since I first registered to this forum.

At what point did Jason De Vos decided to retire from the MNT? He was by far my favorite MNT player for a few years but then he disappeared. I wasn't following the national team too closely for a while but noticed he stopped appearing and I assumed it was due to injury. It's been bugging me that I don't know why he stopped suiting up.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Im pretty sure it was after world cup qualifiers, or the point we were mathematically eliminated, September 2004 was about the time. Thats when he and Onstad retired but I have a feeling he may be back if hes still in shape for 2010 WCQs.

It wasn't announced, but he played his last game in for the MNT in Vancouver during the last qualifying (Oct 13, the 3-1 loss to Costa Rica). We didn't even manage to get a cheer going for him after the game, even though most who followed closely would have known that it was his last game for the MNT. It was kinda sad, watching a player of his commitment and cailbre walking off the field in his home country, in the cool dark Vancouver night, after what was in-all-likelihood his last game, and to not even receive a little cheer. A disgrace, yet typical form from many of the soccer fans in this country. He didn't announce anything, there was no press conference, and the confirmation came after-the-fact in unrelated interviews with JDV. A very unfitting end for a distinguished international career, IMHO.

geez grizz..welcome back...its been a while since you took a potshot at me...fyi everyone who watched the follow-up to the game and read between the lines of interviews and even the writing on the wall could have figured it out. Although it wasn't official (and still isnt if Im not mistaken - and he is obviously partly responsible for how it ended by being such a humble guy to begin with) a lot of hints were dropped about that run probably being his last, about focusing on club football from that point on, and I think it was almost common knowledge amongst V's and the rare knowledgable fan there that night. But maybe you're right...I dunno Grizz...maybe i had psychic powers or something and was the only one who figured it out. My point was that since the stands were filled with soccer moms and fans of Costa Rica and miscellaneous drunks, we didnt have a proper send-off for the guy. Which was, and still remains, a pity. I sincerely think we should have a tribute match for charity for guys like him. And like I said, welcome back.

thanks guys....I sort of figured his disappearance from the MNT dated back to the end of qualifying for the 06WC. It's too bad. I am sure he could still be a useful member of the squad. He was such a horse in that Gold Cup win.

This is what I thought as well, that he never did officially retire and might very well suit up again for WQC 2010, if needed.

If Nolando is right, however, it would have been nice to have a little send off. JDV is class.

First of all, please explain to me how that is a potshot?

If someone does not announce his retirement I don't think you can blame the fans for not giving him a proper send off because they didn't read between the lines of every obscure interview the guy gave especially since according to your post a lot of these interviews were after the game. I do agree that it would be nice to give him a proper send off and maybe the CSA should have or should in the future play a testimonial game in his honour.

face it grizz...you're a shaightdisturber...this may not have been the best example, but you troll around practically every single post on this site looking for places to make yourself known and to stir up the pot...yes we need people like you around to make things interesting, but that doesnt mean im not gonna call a spade a spade...the v's knew it was his last game whether he said so or not...i dont know if i am more disappointed with the drunken ignorance/negligence around my section that game (in not giving JDV an ounce of respect) or with the few thousand others there that day who just couldnt have given a damn one way or the other about who might have been playing his last game for Canada.

At times like this I really wish we still had the rolleyes icon. If I read something I don't agree with I post my opinion, simple as that. If others don't agree with my opinion they post theirs. That is actually how most forums work, people post their opinions and others agree, disagree, criticize etc. If you don't want your opinions criticized then you just shouldn't post instead of trying to censor/intimidate others. I don't think the Voyageurs/Canada fans should be blamed for not giving DeVos a retirement chant when most did not know it was going to be his last game.

Let us put this another way, though. I have been in a number of Voyageur support groups at games and in my experience it usually only takes one guy to get a chant going. Since you were at the game and also claim to have known that this was going to be DeVos' last game, what did you do to ensure that he received the proper send off? If Daniel, Sean Keay etc. can get good chants going at the games I have attended why can't Nolando do the same instead of blaming others for a perceived failure?

On a side note gentlemen, I go to all the MNT games at Swanguard and was at the Costa Rica match as well. I had no clue the DeVos was retiring after that match. However, my question is how does one sit with the Voyageurs and not with the families in the stands. Would i purchase the tickets through this site, providing i was a member? I am tired of being told to sit down, stop yelling and lower your flag. i was escorted out of the Brazil-Canada u20 match beause i refused to stop waving my flag after Lombardos goal. People in the grandstands at Swanguard are afraid to cheer. They weren't even singing the national anthem. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

ohhhh how to respond...first, to again say that yes, this was not the best example of what i perceieve to be grizz's repeated shaightdisturbing, his own particular brand of trolling and message-flooding...apologies apologies, a battle poorly picked i must admit...and yes, i agree, forums like this were made for exactly people like us to be able to disagree...

as for the topic...those who know will remember that i did try to get a number of cheers going at the CR game (as i/we did at most of the Vancouver MNT games that year) and that in that case it was apparently impossible (i am as loud and as lacking in shyness as anybody and believe me i tried) to shift over from the negative, often quite rascist and offensive chants (and i dont mine some minor shaightdisturbing myself) over to some of the fun, positive and more supportive ones directed at the players on our own team...but, that is another topic tht has already been addressed in a separate thread IIRC...in the end i ended up shouting out to him myself alone...a one fan salute, which is probably what prompted me to begin my emotional response to this thread in the first place...at the risk of sounding like some of the people i would choose not to align myself with in the know-it-all camp, upon reflection maybe i WAS one of the only ones even amongt our own V's supporters that understood this to be his last game if we in fact lost, but i highly doubt it.

Even more infuriating than all of this minor squabbling, and perhaps something that we can all agree on, is that it is a national disgrace that guys like Forrest or JDV never get a proper sending off, a testimonial match at least. Maybe for JDV the "new" CSA could arrange an Ipswich Canada friendly when he retires from club football to be played at the new stadium in Toronto.

Again, apologies to grizz for my own poorly-timed potshot.

That is an apology? Hey Grizzly you are a **** disturber and a troll but hey I couldn't prove it in this thread so sorry mate. Thanks.

This thread is actually a good example of your posting style. Accusing fellow Voyageurs and fans of disrespecting the retirement of a player when they didn't know he was retiring. Accusing me of being a troll and **** disturber for criticizing this view. There are other posters here who I often disagree with their views but who nevertheless present well reasoned, knowledgeable and logical arguments. Do the same and your post will receive more respect and less criticism from me.

As far as me being a **** disturbing troll, I am sure you can find various Voyageurs who agree/disagree/like/dislike me but I don't think you will find too many who think I am a troll. If you want to start a thread to get me banned for being a troll knock yourself out but start a new thread as this one is supposed to be about Jason DeVos and not about Grizzly.

I somehow knew that this whole conversation would end with grizz once again telling me his interpretation of events at a game the he did not attend, which is clearly my biggest longstanding problem with the guy.

And for the record, grizz, my posting style generally consists of posting on topics that I have some experience with and not just filling pages and pages with wild speculation and self-serving pap on nearly every single thread imaginable. Go start a blog or something. Quantity does not equal quality. Writing ten replies to each comment you find fault with doesn't make you any more convincing either. I call that articulate trolling. Stick to the Montreal reports and the Bundesliga stuff, which I think everyone appreciates.

And for the record, the apology still stands, mate. You don't have to like it for it to be any less sincere.

I sincerely hope one of our lovely mods locks this thread for this has gone on far too long.

I have made no interpretation at all of the events of the game or how the Voyageurs or fans present reacted so once again I don't know where you are getting that from. All I have stated is that at the time of the game most Voyageurs did not realize that it would be DeVos' last game. Additionally I think the overriding emotion at that moment was of dejection at once again being knocked out of WCQ and not of thinking which players might possibly be retiring from international play.

<Mod>

Yup. I'd say this topic has pretty much run off course and on towards oblivion. You've both had your say so move on. And please try to keep off the personal stuff in the future.

Vancouver Fan had generously taken on the task of organizing a Voyageur block at the Swangard WCQs and did a bang up job of it. Shame you missed out on it all, the good and the bad because there was certainly a mix of both as there always is.

There may not be another opportunity for MNT matchs any time soon on the Left Coast but if there is tune in, maybe Vancouver Fan or someone else will step up again.

Reza, one of the Old Salts around here has put together a scheme for a Voyageur section at Commonwealth for the U20s. Send him an e-mail and he'll provide you a link where you can purchase tickets reserved for Voyageurs. I'll be there at least, with the Wee Elf in tow. She's pretty quiet (joins in but hey, she's a Wee Elf how much voice do you expect?) but I've got lungs enough for us both I'm told so if you make it out we'll see what we can do between us, eh?

Regarding your other complaints about the treatment Canadian supporters receive, as opposed to what gets dolled out to the visiting fans this has long been a complaint shared by many here and elsewhere. But Swangard seems to get beat up on this quite a bit.

Anyway, hard to type and watch the match Arsenal/Manchester United match...

I think he'd answer the call, but winding down his career and having injury problems. Pretty unlikely that we'll see him again. That said, I'd love to see him in the red and white one more time. He was my favourite MNT player for years. I'll never forget the goal against Colombia to win the Gold Cup. We could use another one like him.
