Global (and the CRTC) really blow one time a year

Not quite sure which of the two you're complaining about.

Watching the Superbowl or watching the Superbowl with Fido and Train48 ads.

But don't mind me. I follow curling and F1 and am actualy interested in cricket. Well a little bit a least. Go figure.

I understand all the reasoning behind it (hell, I have class called "Broadcast Policy in Canada"), it's just hella annoying to be stuck with such crappy ads while multi-million dollar funny, innovative and "important" ads.

I enjoyed watching the Super Bowl AND I'm interested in cricket, it's not like sports are mutually exclusive!

Hey.....I got to see 800 New Brunswick tourisim adds on "NB is big on snow" for snowmobile trails, cross country, etc. Like I live here buds, I know we're buried in snow ?

If I saw the add for the snowmobile loop from Miramichi to Bathurst to Campbellton to Edmundston, one more time I was gonna puke......or was that the 1/2 price draught and wings at the pub......Hmmmmmmm

New England winsssssss. Maritimes the home of the Pats and the Red Sox [}:)]

I mostly watched Betis-Osasuna on RSN anyways though.

I sadly caught the last 5 minutes of the game. Good to see Betis is in position for a UEFA Cup spot but I belive they can make the leap into the top 4.

And Cheeta, there's nothing wrong with cricket.

Why would Global, a Canadian Network that is showing the game primarly for Canadian viewers want to show American ads?

The ads are one the main reasons for the huge numbers of people that follow the Super bowl in the United States. Many americans who are not the slightest bit interested in Sports will watch the Super bowl because of the ads. Because of the huge following of the event, advertisers will roll out their best ads for the super bowl. If it wasn't for simulacasting, we would be able to see the ads on the US network on cable. What bugs me is why simulcasting is even still permitted. I could fully understand why if we were still in the seventies or early eighties but who doesn't have at least basic cable nowadays? And even the very very few who do not have cable, will find a way to watch it anyways. So why are canadian networks permitted to simulcast a US program that would be available on basic cable. I wish there was a law passed to forbid this.

In addition, we Canadians don't actually get to see these events live because the networks like Global usually delay the signal for a few seconds to allow them to stick their own commercials in.

Don't think that this has anything to do with the CRTC. The pre-emption is exclusively due to Global buying the Canadian broadcast rights.

And yes, Train 48 ads suck. I mostly watched Betis-Osasuna on RSN anyways though.

Mike.

Since Global has the rights, CRTC regulations mean that the FOX channel feed is taken over by Global's. Called "Simultaneous Substitution".

And, funny enough, Betis also played last season on SNet during the Super Bowl :P.

Frankly, I don't understand why anyone cares about these commercials. I mean, they are advertisements for crying out loud! I try to avoid ads whenever possible! I almost always channel-surf during commercials, or, even better, record programs for later viewing and then fast-forward through the commercials.

Then again, I don't understand why anyone who is not an NFL fan would want to watch the Super Bowl (not to mention "reality shows" and 90% of the rest of the crap that passes for television entertainment these days), but tons of people do, so what do I know. [|)]

Well, why would non-soccer fans watch the World Cup final? Because of the event itself!

About the ads: These are year after year the most expensive ads ever, to purchase and produce. The pricetag is hyped for months ahead of the Superbowl and they have become part of the "complete" viewing experience. Some are innovative, funny, use celebrities, have huge budgets, etc. and are thus much more interesting than whatever Global has to offer. It's not like we're choosing between ads and no ads, but rather between crapilly produced ads and well produced ones.

If people are so gaga about this extreme American experience - the Super Bowl and all the crap commercialism entertainment business money making nonsense that surrounds it - then why not go join them down south and immerse yourself in it.

The mind boggles when I hear American commentators lauding the superbowl winners as 'world champions'. Their little world maybe but for crying out aloud, gridiron football is only played seriously inside the USA, what kind of 'world championship' is that?

What bothers me more is when the media keep saying that the "world is watching" the Superbowl.
