I agree. Radz has his own motives, but people can't forget that we have to field the best 11 players Canada has to offer. He is one of them. I think our mid will play with more confidence and the opposing team will focus more on thier defence play.

Just don't play Radzinski, he choose not to play for Canada but instead

played for Fulham today, no more chances tell him to take a hike.

I agree 100% with you! he faked an injury to not play for Canada! therefore if I was Yallop I wouldnt call him for the next match no matter how good he is,anyone wants to play for their country! oh but I forgot! he's not a Canadian born!

I should read more closely. I'd go for Klukowski at centre back. I've actually seen Atiba play there and I've seen Serioux play as a sweeper, but Klukowski has the pace and the distribution that would be nice to see from one of our central defenders.

We need someone who can run a bit or else it's going to be a long night.

cheers,

matthew

Apparently Kluka has managed to play his way off the team through some disappointing wins (3-1 over San Jose, and a pair of 4-0s over Beleize). I just don't get it Mr. Yallop, I wish you'd explain why all these guys got dropped from a team that was laying some beatings on their opposition.

How would you know he faked it? You don't know the man.

Good point canadiankick97. For all the sudden Radzinski-haters, can you be 100% positive with your information before you starting coming out with rash decisions about kicking him off our squad. How do you guys know if he was hurt or if he wasn't hurt? The only way any of us would know, is if we worked for Fulham. Maybe he got a slight knock in Round 1 of the Premiership, and had to rest it for Round 2, and Coleman didn't want him to go. How will Canada qualify for Germany 2006? With Pesch upfront? The fact of the matter is, that we are lacking depth in the entire squad; dropping our top striker is out of the question.

quote:Unfortunately we don't have a natural centre back with any speed. But both DeVos and Menezes compensate with brains, positioning and reading the game. That is the advantage they have over Reda, McKenna, Watson, Pizzolitto and just about anyone else over the age of 16..

Like I said, I haven't seen Menezes play in awhile but I am not sure he is a viable option. Brains, positioning, and reading of the game can only take you so far, even in a non man-marking role such as a sweeper.

Who knows, maybe he is on fire in the Chinese league right now (that's where he playing, right?). Tony was an important cog in the Gold Cup triumph four years ago, but I'm guessing his time is past at the international level.

For some reason I thought Imhoff played quite a bit of central defence for St. Gallen, particularly when he was first called up to the mnt a couple of years? (Sort of thought he was the Canadian equivalent of Jamie Carragher: not sure if that is good or bad!).

Is he an option for centre back?

Well now, we just don't don't have many options now do we? I am pretty certain you are not advocating continuing with slow centre backs who are unable to position, use there brains or read the play so what are your options then? Imhoff? If he has played centre half then certainly give him a look. But I am not sure that drafting someone who has never played the position before is all that wise. Speed can make up for positioning errors unless the forward is also speedy...which is the case with Honduras. I'll take Menezes over Watson and Pizzolitto thank you. If there is a betteroption, then by all means.

Starting 11

Hirschfeld

Sweeper

Stalteri DeVos Jazic

Hume Serioux Deguzman Brennan

Occean Radzinski

Bench: Sutton derosario Mckenna Hutchison Imhof Klukowski Bircham

I don't know who we have that is capable of sweeping maybe hutchison? But we definately need a sweeper a flat four is crazy. Derosario cannot play in midfield he isn't capable and brennan is, or you could even slot brennan in at the back and move stalteri into midfield but not derosario he fits as the third striker though. Onstad should have been dropped 5 years ago. He was terrible in the last round of qualifying terrible in between and he was terrible against guatemala, with or without first team club action hirschfeld is a much better keeper. I've only seen serioux play in that one game but he looks like he might be a good fit as the more defensive central player in midfield. Occean is a good fit with radzinski because he is bigger and a threat in the air. Granted some of these guys were unavailable but this side beats guatemala by at least three goals.

Depth at centre back is very thin; if Imhoff has never played there before then obviously a WC qualifier isn't the place for him to start on the job training, so we have to HOPE that DeVos and McKenna can do the job.

As for Menezes, the last time I saw him play was a couple of years ago: his lack of pace in a four man backline made him look vulnerable.

Correct me if I am wrong, but he was called up by Yallop for those Swangard friendlies this summer, wasn't he? If that was the case, maybe you watched him play at that time and you saw enough quality to justify his inclusion in the present squad. (When was the last time you saw him play?). I haven't seen him play in awhile and I don't think he's the answer.

A discussion with fellow Ultras James-san, Tony-san, and Marc-san has led me to adopt the view that a formation employing a sole striker is the way to go. Our players seem to exhaust themselves trying to make due with a four-pronged midfield; for this reason, I'd go with a 4-5-1 formation. While I'm sure my placement of Radz (dirty rat bastard status: pending) in the midfield smells of Lennarduzzi-think - the same that nearly forced Radz to disassociate himself from the program - let me point one thing out. I don't see Radzinski as a typical midfielder - at least not in the provider sense - and nor do I see him as a traditional striker. Everything we've been told about Radzinki by our English friends seems to suggest the same thing: he's much more at home roaming the goal area, slightly withdrawn, making darting runs into the box at moments to his liking. Not only is this what he is comfortable with, it's also what he's best at. Radzinski's brightest moments with Everton came when he was teamed with Rooney, creating room for the Boy-wonder by attracting defenders of-canter with his pace and sense of pitch-space. Not only this, but his ability to muck-up the most begging of chances has become legendary. On the flipside, so has his knack for creating something out of nothing. I hope this withdrawn role would give him more of an opportunity to do more of the latter, and while we're at it, less of the former.

He's also got the pace to run up and support Occean during those rare times when we find the courage to push up. This, too, is a major part of this formation - supporting runs. It's also in this area where I see DeGuzman coming in handy; periodically switching between central provider and extra attacker.

This "interchangeability", combined with an attacking full-back combo, gives this formation a nice touch of adaptability, I find. Brennan on the left is more the defensive specialist and is thus more adept to covering for some of Jazic's attacking ventures. On the other end of the pitch, Hume, while less a defender, brings to the table his unique crossing ability; this means there wouldn't be to much need for him to drop back and cover for Stalteri as much. Hume's value as a flanking midfielder is also partly found in his ability to make cutting runs into the box (or so say the Tranmere supporters). This is good for two reasons: One, it's yet another option as far as supporting the lone Occean goes, thus allowing Hume to still utilize his abilities as a striker; and two, it gives Stalteri an opportunity to attack forward, replacing Hume on the wing, hence not to isolate Larry to much for the offensive play.

I also like the five man midfield because, if our boys manage to attack/defend as a cohesive unit (calling Frank yallp, repeat, calling Frank Yallop), the extra support in the middle could help make up for the lack of pace seen on our back-line, especially in the centre. This is important beause despite the lack of speed, I really think having Menezes' ability to move the ball out of the back makes us a much larger threat on the counter-attack.

Finally, I see Serioux as the holding-midfielder. I think, more than anything, our improved form in the second half against the Guats was down to Serioux's ability to win us posession; in the first half every 50/50 ball went the Guats way.

Hi everybody. i am a new member and a real fan.i know a lot about the players and i can be useful. here is my starting eleven.

sutton

stalteri, devos, mackenna, brennan

peter, serious, deguzman, derosario

occean, radzindski

subs: Lars, gervais, jazic, imhof, bernier, hume, simpson

At the moment, this starting eleven is the best in canada. everybody has accept the fact that peter and occean are skillful enough to play at that level and that Serious is the man we need in the midfield for his physical presence.

Why do I have to accept that? Occean maybe, but Peters? The kid's definitely an exciting prospect and I like him a lot but he's not a starter for this wcq campaign.

Agreed.

Curious as to why Occean seems to have bumped Big Kev right out of the target man role so quickly. Is it more to do with the thin red line we've got currently in the back or what?

Should be quite the different line up come next saturday and expect that we'll hear something later in the week.

Hume will be available again. JDV, McKenna, Radz. and even Bircham should be fit, firm and ready to go provided this weeks action dosen't do anyone any further harm. Hell, Brennan may even make an appearance and Josh might be back up to snuff by a week Saturday.

Re; JayWay.

4-5-1 would work very nicely given a bit of familiarity. Don't know if our lads could pull it off though. Especially against Hondorus who by accounts are a pretty fleet footed attacking bunch. Our central D is going to be slower than we'd like so we'll just have to accept that and build around it. Good news is they could be quite a bit bigger too so I'm comfortable with plugging the middle and surrendering the flanks.

If you're gonna play 5, play 5 at the back and give Diesel and Jazic free range. Use Radz and Hume to attack the enemy flanks and play for corners. Let the big men trot up and noggin one in. That'll get the Hondurian's thinking.

If the 1st match was any indication I also think we shouldn't be so shy of these CONCACAF ref's. Seemed more concearned with the diving last Wednesday than the tackling. Don't know if word came down from above or what but we may be able to get away with a little bullying out there.

If Yallop dosen't think Saturday's match is absolutely our entire World Cup campain now, after the loss at Swangard than he's living in a fool's paradise.

Being in the UK, I only just watched the tape of the Guatemala match this evening. I was struck by a number of things but alot has already been said on this board about some so I won't bother repeating some of them.

But here is my two cents worth based on this match, the Wales match and a number of our friendlies over the last couple of years.

(1) To play a possession game, you need players that have a good first touch, move into space well, make space for themselves well, and basically have a footballing brain. We only have in my opinion about three or four of those in total. DeGuzman, Stalteri, Radzinski, and to my surprise Serioux. I think you need at least 7 or 8 on your side to play possession football and the rest at least have to be half decent to do it (ie. no Watsons, Hastings, etc.). I haven't seen Brennan enough to comment on him but he was terrible in Wales, Occean needs to improve this aspect of his game as his first touch was terrible against the Guats, DeRossario does not have a great first touch but more importantly, he has a terrible footballing brain. I have watched him a number of times and he runs into blind alleys, gets out of position, passes when he shoot, shoots when he should pass. There is no question that he has skill but you need players that can think and play football. He is not one. Hume also lacks the ability to play possession football but he is young and can hopefully learn (as we need him but I will get back to that). Pesch is have decent in this regard but clearly has lost a step. Imhoff gives the ball away time and again, doesn't make space for himself, makes the wrong choices, etc. Simpson is too one dimensional as he needs to learn when to run at people and when to pass the ball back or inside. Devos for a center back is adequate in this regard but obviously this is not his strength. Finally, Peters can play possession football but he is clearly young so probably should not be relied upon.

(2) Our defense sucks without DeVos. Personally, I don't even think De Vos is a god but simpley an above average English Chapionship defender. But he can read the game and organise the defense. The rest simply cant. The Guatemala game was embarassing as was the Irish match, the Scottish match, the Czech match, the German match, the US match etc. (a couple with De Vos just back from injury). I don't know how many times we were backing in against the Guats with no one taking the ball. On their first goal, Stalteri fluffed it about what 10 metres inside the centre line. It took Watson forever to recognise the danger and then never even got close to closing the guy down. And it wasn't lack of speed but a lack of realisation of the danger and then urgency to cover the space. But this is just one example. I could name about 10 others in the Guats match alone.

(3) Onstad is not a number one keeper. He sucked on coming for crosses against Wales and if they had some more height in the front line we would have been in big trouble against them. He was standing way off his line on the second goal of the Guats. I mean it was simple kick overhead of our defense (which if Onstad was position correctly our defense probably would have dealt with) that Ruiz just one touched and had the ingenuity to lob Onstad. That is a school boy error. Terrible.

(4) Without Hume, we are in serious need of a dead ball specialist. I don't know how many foolish free kicks the Guats gave away in dangerous areas and how many corners we had but the delivery of Pesch and DeGuzman was horrible. I personally think that if Hume would have played and De Vos we would have won the match. But we basically never created a single chance off of I would say at least 15 dead ball situations (including corners). Its amazing how bad we played especially in the first half but I almost got the feeling that the Guats just to get us out of any rhtym would foul us with 10 yards of their 18 yard box because they new we had a couple of amateurs taking the kicks.

Anyway, enough ranting....and here is my line up for the next match.

Lars

Stalteri McKenna DeVos Jazic

Hume Serioux DeGuzman Brennan/Kluklowski/Simpson

Radzinski Occean

Hopefully, DeVos and McKenna can shore up the central defense. If McKenna is not ready, consider Hutchinson or Imoff there as Watson and Pizzolito are just not up to it. Plus both all of these players are better with the ball than Watson. And more importantly, they are better defenders.

We need Hume on the pitch simply for deadball situations. DeGuzman and Serioux will keep possession in midfield and on the left I am on decided. Kluklowski might be an option as I think he can take free kicks as can Brennan I think.

Up front, perhaps Rad can work off Occean. Pesch I still don't think is fit enough to go 90. And I have seen enough of DeRossario to realise why even in the prime of his years he cannot become a bona fide starter in the MLS. He's injury cover for me.
