gigi riva
I never saw him play but I do remember older people telling me of his greatness, and lets face it if it were not for him he helped put Soccer on the map here in North America. And from What I heard a hell of a nice guy off the field

Canuckistan68
Thinking back to my early childhood (over 50 years ago), I think Pele was the first athelete of any sport that I recall knowing. I knew of Pele before even any hockey star, and I live in Canada! ray
gigi riva
Another cool thing about him was he was the only New York Athelete that was able to get into Studio 54 back in the day

In any case, you mean the only New York athlete apart from O.J.?

There are a few documentaries, one great one is Studio 54: The Documentary, it is fascinating on a lot of levels. The whole control of the door was a crucial part of the entire project, they'd let a singer of a band in but not the other members, they might not let the guy with his girlfriend or only let one of a group of friends. it was random, dictatorial, unfair. They were curating the public. I did not know about Pele but I think that was cool. The only other athlete I recall was O.J.. I think Namath went once retired. The vast majority were socialites, people in the fashion world, musicians, actors, celebrities. I think many active athletes shied from the place because of the strongly gay identity.
