The Ref
We haven't heard the rest of the story yet. The lawyer for player Castillo says since there is no legal obligation for his client to attend Fifa's Appeal Audience that his client may not attend September 15. The Ref
Chilean media reported Wednesday one of the three FIFA appeal judges selected is from Qatar. The appeals chairman is Neil Eggleston, an American who was the former White House Counsel. (the above reprinted from CBC)

nolando
Ecuador is usually my backup country to cheer for, after having lived there briefly many years ago. This evidence seems irrefutable to me; I just don't understand the ruling. Very disappointing.
The Ref
I think Chile is just spinning their wheels going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Should the Court judge rule against Ecuador and Castillo, Fifa can just ignore the rule and stick with the makeup of teams as already scheduled. What needs to happen in the future is that Fifa should no longer rely of passports since passports is solely a travel document not a primary document of proof of citizenship. The Ref
The resolution by Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the case of the Colombian player Castillo appealed by Chile is expected tomorrow November 7. I think that whichever the resolution ended up being, that Fifa will not change anything. Last minute changes of participating countries and number of countries would be total chaos. The Ref
The decision is out. Chile and Peru say goodbye to Qatar. Ecuador is in, but they were fined $100,000 U.S. and the loss of 3 points for the next 2026 qualifications. Also they have to pay an indemnity of $10,000 to Chile and Peru. The Ref
Now Ecuador is not happy with the sanctions received and is deciding how to proceed. Is there an end to this saga?
The Ref
So what's next I wonder. Ecuador's Federation decided not to take Byron Castillo as part of the roster to Qatar. They say they want to avoid any more problems. Unnamed Trialist

The financial losses to either Chile and Peru are huge in contrast to the $10,000 indemnity awarde by the court.

Exactly. And the fine of $100,000 to Ecuador is laughable considering the minimum $9 million they receive from FIFA for just participating. Could be more if they advance from group stage. So, they broke the rules or not? If they fielded an ineligible player then isn't it pretty cut an dry? Love how FIFA just makes it up as they go along! Remember when Mexico was actually banned from world cups!? Imagine that happening! The Ref
The Ref
So Swiss courts ratified earlier sanctions against Ecuador. They loose 3 points towards classification to the next World Cup and have to pay 100 thousand francs fine. The is no further recourse available for Ecuador. This comes just 10 days before Chile meets Ecuador for a qualifying round.
