My two cents:

Small song list. Basic songs. There will be plenty of people in the Vs section in Toronto, I'm guessing, who are new to the whole thing. Repetition of easy songs -- and/or ones they may recognize from club games -- is the best way to encourage participation. So, "We're dynamite", "When the Reds go marching in", "The Massive", etc.

Agree completely. A lot of the songs used by the TFC supporters groups have no words anyway (and some would argue no tune or rhythm either) but are just La's or Ooooh's. While not particular to any team, they are a good way to get everyone involved and still offer positive support.

There's some great songs but as pointed out, I think it would be best to narrow the list down to the easiest ones! It's hard enough to coordinate these with regular supporters' groups, it will be a real struggle with all the first timers! Anyone remember the Atiba one to the tune of Tequila?

+1

I think pretty well everyone would be in agreement that keeping the list of songs to 5 or less and focusing on the simple ones is definitely the direction to go.

I would like to create a few 'timed' traditions.

Ie... let the capos do their thing but build up some standards that are not too restrictive.

5 times

Start of each half

Middle first half

Middle second half

86th minute.

Are there other 'significant' minutes we could use?

^Looks sensible, how about final whistle?

As an aside has this song ever been tried at BMO?

"DeRo and the Seven Dwarfs" (Hi-ho it's off to work I go)

He'll shoot, he'll pass, He'll kick your ass,

I love the idea of the 86th minute. The symbolism is great. However, after having been to the game in Montreal, I don't know how feasible it is (and has it ever been done?!). The reason being the 86th minute is just too damn late. Unless we're winning by a ton or losing by a ton, everyone is hyped up, praying that something happens or that nothing does, we're yelling after the players who are falling down too easily and not getting up fast enough, etc. I remember in the Montreal game, I wanted to start the Heart of Gold. By the time I remembered about it, we were in extra time...

I completely understand why the 86th minute, but I think it would be much easier to do something at the 67th.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about having chants that are too complicated. If Montreal last time around was any indication, it will basically be about 7-10 chants being repeated over and over.

From what I remember:

- Whent the Reds come Marching in;

- Jimmy Brennan (to the tune of Hey baby, I wanna knooooooow if you'll be me girl);

- The Friend/Crouch song;

- Seven Nation Army;

- Can you hear Honduras sing;

- Allez allez allez les rouges allez, repeat, then repeat again with *oooooh*;

- Canada *clap clap clap* Canada *clap clap clap*

- Kunero? (I'm honestly not sure. We would yell something resembling that to Honduras players or fans. No idea what it actually was or what it mean);

- Ali, Kumbaye? (for Gerba, and again, no idea what we were actually yelling. Went at it phonetically, lol).

And I remember that, even more than the capo, the drummer made the songs go. Whatever song the drummer (who was a couple of people away from me) was drumming, most people would sing that.

Also, I will possibly be working on a project this fall or winter trying to make some tracks of songs. Having a notebook is one thing, actually hearing them is another. I'm going to try to get a bunch of buddies around, record whatever songs we agree too and post them somehow online.

When I was in Tunis last summer, a guy I met there was a huge Espérance Sportif fan. They actually had cds that were distributed with all the core chants of the supporters group he was in. Cds aren't realistic I think for this, but I think that posting it online would be a very good idea to get people who aren't used to them to start remembering them and chanting them in their heads.

I don't want to accuse you of being ignorant but you might want to educate yourself

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Johnny_Comes_Marching_Home

""When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (sometimes "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again") is a popular song of the American Civil War that expressed people's longing for the return of their friends and relatives who were fighting in the war."

It's one thing for clubs to sing a country's patriotic war song. It's another story to adopt it for national team use. Are we going to sing God Save Queen next?

The Culeros chant (I believe that's how it is spelled) is Whore in spanish, or like to call someone a whore (quite fitting for the ****s from Honduras).

Ali Gerba's is "ALI - BUMAYE! ALI - BUMAYE!" which is what fans chanted for Muhammed Ali during the Thilla in Manilla, it means Ali - Finish Him (basically kill him). Great to chant like crazy after Big Ali G pots one for us (surprisingly common for him with the Nats).

I think the simplest of them all, the Canada *clap clap clap* chant could catch on outside the supporters' sections, possibly to be used at a time when things have died down a bit, or else we're showing come good possession, so the rest of the crowd will be hyped up a bit. It's easy for everyone to follow, and something parents and kids will do together. Yeah we wanna foster more hardcore supporter's culture for Nats games, but hell, we already know the writin's on the wall for these two, we're going to need voices from the worst sources for the boys this time round...

We have tons of time, and opportunities for memorable events, to come up with chants for guys like Simeon or Kluko or even guys like Pedro Pacheco or Terry Dunfield (the fear of Venezuela!).

We have the pre game meeting place, I think passing out a large list of songs at the door wouldn't hurt. I made 200 photo copies and passed them out at the Rhino for the jamaica game and it kind of helped. Heart of Gold at the start of the second half could work well. I do like the 86th, but it is kind of late. I really like the song for us, and if it would be amazing if everyone learned it. I also love the idea of "maple leaf forever" even just a couple of verses.

All that being said there are always random chants that get started up "we'll be shaggin' rickets mother til she c*mes". And I plan on reading up on the goalie and ruining his night.

I also plan on making a **** ton of photo copies again so Capos, I will gladly take your greatest hits and run them to the printer.

Count me in, I'm up for making copies as well. Need to put a dent in that new ink cartridge anyways, haha!

the printer.

I love that idea. I think the Maple Leaf Forever is a great song for a soccer match. Uniquely Canadian, isn't the anthem, and is not a soccer specific song that only hardcore supporters would know.

Not to nitpick. But this was first chanted by fans at the "Rumble in the Jungle" in Zaire, Africa (Ali vs. Foreman). It's fitting as Ali is African born.

The Maple Leaf Forever with lyrics

There are also these lyrics, re done to be slightly less British. Buble sang this version at the closing ceremony of the VAN olympics. I won't lie, I like them both. But these are a tad more simple. I'm by no means a liverpool fan but it puts it on par with something like You'll never walk alone. Grigorio is right, it isnt the anthem, and its always good to have something else we break into other than Oh Canada.

O, land of blue unending skies,

Mountains strong and sparkling snow,

A scent of freedom in the wind,

O'er the emerald fields below.

To thee we brought our hopes, our dreams,

For thee we stand together,

Our land of peace, where proudly flies,

The Maple Leaf forever.

Chorus:

Long may it wave, and grace our own,

Blue skies and stormy weather,

Within my heart, above my home,

The Maple Leaf forever!

O, Maple Leaf around the world,

You speak as you rise high above,

Of courage, peace and quiet strength,

Of the Canada that I love.

Remind us all, our union bound

By ties we cannot sever,

Bright flag revered on every ground,

The Maple Leaf forever!

Maybe just the first 2 verses and the chorus. I think it's doable, that is if we like these better than the old version.

I think it's brilliant. It works on so many levels, and sounds great to boot. It really speaks to us as Canadians and the fact that we come from different backgrounds, but all united under the maple leaf.

I can't support this venture enough. I think it's an incredible, classy, inspiring and moving addition to any songs we can sing.

Also, it's already on our scarves "Maple Leaf Forever, Allez les Rouges"

Big fan of "We Shall not be Moved" sounds great after a big goal or if the team is down helps get the crowd behind them again.

Also love the idea of the chorus and first verse of Maple Leaf Forever, for me would work much better as a soccer song than heart of gold.
