Macksam
^^^What he said. There is still some hope though. The Pan Am organizers, federal and provincial governments still have the final say with regards to funding. Since there will be no primary tenant with this location, they could force the city to move it to Young's site.
brettinhalifax
^ Hamilton wants to revitalize downtown, Young wants it in a field next to a highway IMO it is a little more complicated than that. Hamilton wants a downtown revitalization project, Young wants a stadium where the Tiger-Cats breakeven.
Blue and White Army
Young is saying "no" to a downtown site, in favour of a location only accessible by automobile? Idiot.
Macksam
Young is saying "no" to a downtown site, in favour of a location only accessible by automobile? Idiot. It's not as clear cut as that. Not every city has downtown areas like Vancouver or Toronto.

Raven
It may not matter................only 25% of teams in USSF Div II can be Canadian................ http://www.insidemnsoccer.com/2010/08/11/ussf-d2-update-new-standards-set-for-league-current-and-future-owners/ or is the NASL going to be some sort of separate entity????....... Kibby
wow... only 25% of the teams in a US div2 sanctioned league can be canadian..... "IF" MTL and VC keep a team, like the IMS article says, plus Edmonton FC the D2 league must have 12 American teams to add one more Canadian (16 team league) 20 team league would be needed for Ottawa and Hamilton and a 24 team league for any other city to join? What about Puerto Rico? They have their own FA. This is a huge c*ckblock on hoping for any Pro growth in Canada, without a nationwide pro league. kyam
Hamilton's downtown actually is Toronto. Hamilton does have its own urban centre (downtown). Did my grad studies at Guelph, went down to hamilton fairly often for our pub crawls. If I had to make a comparison in terms of size, Downtown Hamilton is about the size of downtown Victoria. Of course, Victoria is a heck of a lot nicer (and Hamilton smells funny).... its nowhere near the liveliness or shear size of Downtown Toronto.... But it has a perfectly legit Downtown Core with a nightlife thats no worst than what we have in Ottawa... Of course, outside Elgin and the Market, downtown Ottawa shuts down after 6PM...but considering Hamilton is smaller than Ottawa, not a bad nightlife. paul-collins
Aren't there big plans for upgrades to transit in Hamilton? edit: yes - LRT on King / Main. Also, a new GO station at "north James" just west of the downtown stadium location.

ted
The article says that the 25% number is negotiable. The real killer is going to be the net worth requirements. Does a corporation count? If so, by these standards only rich individuals can own teams and frankly, that is what has caused a lot of problems in the past. How many Canadians worth $20M or more are interested in Soccer? Kik-d-bol
IMHO, any new/renovated stadium in Ott or Ham that even considers handling CFL should still be Soccer-specific. The endzone seats should NOT be permanently fixed to the ends of the football endzones. It's just too far for soccer. Put them or rollers of something to allow for close-to-the-goal viewing for fans, not just the photographers.

Their position is irrelevant. They can wave money around, but this is about the sanctioning body, not the league itself. And the USSF has stated it's going to stick to this set of criteria. So with Montreal coming back, it'll be down to Edmonton v. Puerto Rico for the last spot, as it's unlikely there will be more than eight teams in the division.
