"Beckham’s contract also contains a clause enabling him to buy into an MLS franchise the year after and such is his desire to stay in North America that negotiations have already started with a view to investing in the Montreal Impact, who hope to join the league in 2012."

Do the Saputo's really need a partner to compete with anyone?

Any partnership would be done for marketing purposes, not for financial reasons. MLS is a league with enormous cost controls and can be very profitable if you have a strong season's ticket base

The Saputo's have an extremely large fortune but don't seem willing to spend very much of it, for example, in the manner Kerfoot does with the Caps. Everything they do seems to be based on the premise of is it profitable and not taking possible money losing risks. That may be a good business strategy that helps the long term viability of the club but is also the reason that we haven't been playing in the MLS already for several years and why we have a stadium that is new but nevertheless will need a major upgrade to make it MLS ready. Remember they previously wanted to partner with the much less wealthy George Gillett in the previous bid and also that the Impact are a non-profit corporation partly owned by the Quebec government and Hydro Quebec, ie. the Saputos did not appear to be willing to even own a USL franchise outright. Beckham would be a marketing asset but I think you might be surprised as to how much his actual money will be factoring into this.

You can never have too many friends in the soccer business. Could Kerfoot go it alone? Of course but look who he brought in, Nash, Mallett & Luczo. If he doesn't need them why bring them in? Smarts! You now have 4 times the contacts in business, sports and public awareness just went up huge with Nash. Spread the risk just make sure all partners are on the same page so you don't end up with feuding warlords.

Beckham's academies are a sign of his business interests and building his brand. The timing of Montreal is a perfect fit but culturally it's a little odd. They lionize Zidane because of his French roots. Beckham is maudit anglais.

That's too simplistic. Zidane does have that cultural link through his language but a lot of people in quebec reject, to a certain degree, the pop cultural influences of France. Literature, movies and arts is one thing, but pop culture and lifestyle is another.

Beckham's appeal and brand transcends cultures so much so that it doesn't matter that he is English. You are more likeley to see a Beckham's photo in a Quebec fashion or entertainment magzine than one of Zidane.

Doesn't look like Beckham will be investing in Montreal...he has an option on the 20th team:

"MLS commissioner Don Garber says Beckham has been given the option of buying the league's 20th team.

The 34-year-old, who can invest in a future franchise under the terms of his LA Galaxy contract, has reiterated his desire to become an MLS team owner.

MLS currently has 15 teams with Philadelphia joining in 2010 followed by Portland and Vancouver in 2011, while Montreal lead the chase to become the league's 19th team.

Garber revealed: "David has the option for our 20th team and that option can't be exercised until after 2011 or after he stops playing. So we've got some time to figure that one out."

Using that argument do the Whitecaps really need Steve Nash's money? I think not, it is all about PR and marketing.

steve nash would also have some pull in bringing in players...look at that fundraiser he ran in NYC, had some big named players there...look for Henry in 2011???

According to Gerry Dobson, David Beckham's 20th franchise is likely to be in New York:-

As far as Montreal is concerned, it's not official, but you can count on it: The Impact will be the league's 19th team to begin play in 2012, and David Beckham will definitely not be involved. His option to own a team will not kick in until the league announces a 20th team. Watch for that to be in New York with Beckham retiring by then and leading that city's second franchise.

This really isn't the way it is here. Little to nothing is seen as linking Quebec francophones with the French and Quebec anglophones with the British.
