Any partnership would be done for marketing purposes, not for financial reasons. Everything they do seems to be based on the premise of is it profitable and not taking possible money losing risks. That may be a good business strategy that helps the long term viability of the club but is also the reason that we haven't been playing in the MLS already for several years and why we have a stadium that is new but nevertheless will need a major upgrade to make it MLS ready. Remember they previously wanted to partner with the much less wealthy George Gillett in the previous bid and also that the Impact are a non-profit corporation partly owned by the Quebec government and Hydro Quebec, ie. the Saputos did not appear to be willing to even own a USL franchise outright. Of course but look who he brought in, Nash, Mallett & Luczo. If he doesn't need them why bring them in? Smarts! You now have 4 times the contacts in business, sports and public awareness just went up huge with Nash. Youth development is going to be the tipping point for certain teams...and recruitment will be so much easier with someone of Beckham's ilk. Zidane does have that cultural link through his language but a lot of people in quebec reject, to a certain degree, the pop cultural influences of France. Literature, movies and arts is one thing, but pop culture and lifestyle is another. Beckham's appeal and brand transcends cultures so much so that it doesn't matter that he is English. The 34-year-old, who can invest in a future franchise under the terms of his LA Galaxy contract, has reiterated his desire to become an MLS team owner. MLS currently has 15 teams with Philadelphia joining in 2010 followed by Portland and Vancouver in 2011, while Montreal lead the chase to become the league's 19th team. Garber revealed: "David has the option for our 20th team and that option can't be exercised until after 2011 or after he stops playing. His option to own a team will not kick in until the league announces a 20th team. Watch for that to be in New York with Beckham retiring by then and leading that city's second franchise.
