Burnley to cap salaries....

Clearly, and with good reason, the club has surrendered any hope of staying up and is going for the cash grab. Happens time to time, and maybe isn't necessarily a bad thing. Club can retire a lot of debt not just in the year they play in the Prem but with the parachute money they receive in subsequent years and really improve the long term health of the organization.

Does make it more difficult to bring in the journeymen and youngsters you'll need to make a decent effort of it though.

1 pound = 1.90 canadian .. mm call it two .. so 30k per week x 52 = over 1.5 million cap per player if they are paid on a 52 week basis.

Whats to say with some energy and desire they could not stay up .. the salaries surely would give them enough to find some hidden talent elsewhere in the lower leagues to bring in ...

This is what clubs do. They determine their wage structure that they can afford, and then follow it. It's how they don't get run into the ground. It's also what North American sports don't do.

I don't think European teams have any better record of not being run into the ground then North American ones. If anything judging from the amount of soccer clubs in bankruptcy or serious financial difficulty I think they are worse. Nevertheless, this may be a smart move by Burnley to look long term and not sacrifice their future for one year of glory that may still end in relegation no matter how much they pay. Energie Cottbus would have to be their role model here, a team that is frequently in the top tier in Germany with a budget that would be only middle level in the 2nd BL. Burnley will have to concentrate on finding hidden gems in non-traditional countries, young players who want to establish themselves in the top division and older players who have the ability for EPL but for whatever reason have never had the chance to prove themselves. At the very least they should have a team of players very hungry to compete.

Good on 'em.

ditto

its not like they are proposing to pay players minimum wage. Good players can be had at a reasonable price if you know where to look.

Burnley isn't exactly London so the cost of living should not be as exorbitant as it would be for players living in big English cities.

I watched Burnley 4-5 times last season in the Championship and they were a very good side. The jump to the Prem is big but with a few key additions and a commitment to playing within their ability, there is no reason why they should not contend to stay up, which is really all a newly promoted side can truthfully hope to do.
