Canada's women's national team has nominated its roster for the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Coach Even Pellerud made his selections today in North Vancouver, BC, less than a week before the soccer players and staff depart for Asia. The Canadian soccer team will compete in the Women's Olympic Football Tournament from 6-21 August in Beijing, China.

Canada's soccer team qualified for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament for the first time in Association history earlier this season. Canada qualified by finishing second at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament in Juarez, Mexico. The clinching victory was a 1:0 win over hosts Mexico in the tournament semi-final. Melissa Tancredi scored the decisive goal while goalkeeper Erin McLeod kept the clean sheet.

Canada will play Argentina, China and Sweden in the opening round of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Canada plays Argentina on 6 August, China on 9 August and Sweden on 12 August. From the 12 teams in the women's tournament (three groups of four teams), eight teams advance to the 15 August quarter-finals. Four teams then advance to matches on 18 and 21 August: first the semi-finals and then, depending on the outcomes, either the gold-medal final or bronze-medal final.

Every player nominated to the roster for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament has also represented Canada at the national or national-youth level. On the world stage, Canada was most recently ranked ninth in the FIFA Women's World Rankings. The Canadian team finished second to the world's number-one ranked United States at the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament. At the youth level, Canada recently won its second CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship, this time defeating the United States 1:0 in the 2008 final.

I'm willing to bet that Bridge will get the team. He has put in

years of work with the team as well as Head Coach of many of the youth

teams. He knows all the players. Coached many of these ladies to the

World Cup Final in Edmonton. It would save the CSA money on a search

and hiring a local guy that is qualified. It will be his team.

Maybe James will be one of his Coaches. They did play together.

Incredibly not a single francophone player on the roster. Is this a case of Quebec shooting itself in the foot or is there a greater problem? I like the way the Quebec players play, technique and speed.

Isn't Amy Walsh from Montreal?

Both Amy and Rhian are Montrealers but I guess not from "Francophone" families. Not sure what the history is, but I firmly believe that we will see more female players from Quebec (Francophone and Anglophone Quebecers) make the senior team in future years. This can already be seen with the younger WNT teams.

Quebec NTC is working well in that respect; good programme, better communications with NT coaches and they also assist francophone players with their English to facilitate participation in NT camps.

Its also clearly a priority with the CSA President to redress the systemic barriers that have to be faced up to. James as scout concerns me, its the old case of cross over .. if he is soccer analyst .. do it, dont get in bed with folks you will need to critique, if he has left his media gig for good then he needs to say it..

Look to Ken Read announcement today to see the proper way to deal with conflict and perceptions, class all the way, the CSA and especially the womens program could take some direction from his value system.

Quebec's youth teams are incredibly competitive, but something seems to happen around the college years. If you look at the hockey side of things and see how many of the NT players are from Quebec (6 or 7 last olympics) you see how important Q's contribution is to Team Canada. The big difference is Hockey Canada versus the CSA. Hockey Canada will make sure it grooms the very best talent no matter where they are from and they have the resources to do it. (money, infrastructure and top level coaches everywhere).

Robinson joins Canada for the Olympics

Richmond, BC’s Jodi-Ann Robinson has joined the Canadian team for the upcoming Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Previously nominated as a team alternate, she replaces injured forward Amber Allen on the 18-player roster. Allen is unable to participate in the Olympics after reinjuring her leg.

Robinson, still only 19 years old, is in her fifth season with the national team. She has six goals in 30 career games. In 2007, she was part of Canada’s FIFA Women’s World Cup team. At the youth level, she has participated in two FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cups, with potentially a third this November at Chile 2008. She has 14 youth goals, third-most in Association history behind Christine Sinclair (22) and Brittany Timko (16).

In 2008, Robinson has scored four goals in 14 games. She has come off the bench 12 times, second most for a single national-team season (Timko has made 13 appearances off the bench in 2008). In 2008, Robinson has scored two goals as a starter (both on 27 July in an 8:0 win over Singapore) and two as a substitute.

As for Allen, she was somewhat of an inspiration after fighting back from injury to earn a nomination to this team. Allen had previously missed two FIFA Women’s World Cups because of injury (USA 2003 and China 2007). Allen had played in five games for Canada in 2008, the most-recent of which was on 26 July in Singapore (a 1:1 draw with New Zealand). Allen of Chilliwack, BC was the oldest player on the team at 32 years.

Along with Robinson’s nomination to the Canadian team, The Pas, MB’s Chelsea Stewart has been named Robinson’s replacement on the alternate list. Stewart, 18 years old, received her first call-up to the senior team last month before the 10 July friendly at BMO Field in Toronto (she did not feature in a 1:1 draw with Brazil). In June, Stewart (along with Robinson, Jonelle Filigno and Sophie Schmidt) helped Canada win the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico.
