The US have some serious issues. At least it looks like Nowak regained some sense and decided not to play Edu at CB as he had in some of the prep. matches. Kamani Hill, a player who made some sub appearances for Wolfsburg as a striker last season is being experimented with at RB.

Yeah, bigsoccer is going into meltdown in the game thread, making it difficult to assess what actually happened from their comments.

BS in full meltdown mode...SHOCKING!

Interesting result...The US missed last time after being eliminated in the semis by Mexico...a repeat scenario is every American-based BS poster's biggest nightmare. So much so that many were bitter that the two teams weren't put in the same pool.

God, I'd like to qualify for this and see the US miss out (so that Edu and Wynne stay with TFC ;))...I'd certainly rather face Honduras in an win and in game than the US...so, good results for us tonight (but, I'd rather just win five straight games...)

Mexico, our first opponent:

19 Santiago Fernández (Toluca)

the same Santiago Fernandez who spent several years in Vancouver playing for the BC provincial teams and with The Roman Tulis soccer school?

Was he born and raised in Canada?

Born in Mexico in '85. Don't know when he came to Canada or for how long he stayed, but he was back in Mexico with Club America in 2002 (age 17).

He played in the U20 qualifiers back in 2005.

Guest Jeffery S.

This was the guy who grew up a while in North Vancouver, and who was with Barça youth a few years back. I saw him play on pre-season match, posted on this but can't find it now.

Fairly strong, tall, a target striker type of the sort Mexico does not tend to have. I guess they'll use him for that purpose if they are hard up for a goal.

Good news on the defections. The fence jumpers will lose to Panama/Honduras. If we do take down 2nd in our group, having Honduras win the other group, based on Nowak's naivety, would be sweet for us.

Keep your gfingers crossed, there's word they might have to forfeit the tournament. And you know what that means, Jack and Chuck will find a way to award the US a 3-0 win for last nights draw...

The article mentions that Cuba may be asked by Concacaf to forfeit, as they apparently only have 13 players left in the camp and one of them is suspended for the Honduras game. Would that mean automatic wins for Honduras and Panama in the place of their matches and US result stays as is?

That would almost ensure the US finishes 2nd. I'm thinking we'll find out tomorrow, they'll want to see what happens tonight.

Prediction: If Mexico does not win, Cuba plays on. If Mexico win, Cuba forfeits all results and the US is awarded a 3-0 win as to avoid a SF clash with Mexico....you gotta love CONCACAF.

So our boys are now representing justice against corruption. Sounds like a comic book.

They ran out of gas. Now it's 2-0 up for Honduras, getting late in the 2nd half. They had another scare as their GK looked like he was done, but managed to get back into the game.
