jonovision, with this being the first year the MSL is taken into account, from the original discussion on this MLS was going to be 3pts. But that would mean Dichio would be tied with Cucca at 3pts, behind Gbeke from the USL at 4pts.

Surely the higher calibre of play between the MLS and USL (as well as PDL/CSL/PCSL) should be weighed a little more heavily. This isn't written in stone and feedback from all interested Voyageurs is appreciated.

Regs, the .5 was intended for provincial leagues, but I think that the VMSL could qualify based on what I'm assuming is equal to better level of play as some provinces.

Thanks for your response.

I was just a bit surprised to see the number that high (more than double the USL goal value). Quality of league is a factor, but would a 16-goal campaign in MLS (72 pts) really be more impressive than a 35-goal season in USL-1 (70 pts?).

Those are just my two cents.

Anyway, I enjoy the thread and check it regularly throughout the season. It must be an awful lot of work, so thanks, and keep it up.

RC,

I'm just surprised that the PCSL would be given so much weight in this thing (which I agree with the above poster must be a heck of amount of work) as compared to the other BC leagues. In this part of the country, I would put PCSL, VMSL, VISL, FVSL all at the same level (to keep things simple) and definitely above the collegiate game.

Regs,

Just like the quality of play in some of the BC leagues are as equal (or better) than the PCSL, I would wager that some Alberta Major Soccer League teams could beat most of the CSL, collegiate and PCSL franchises (my bias). As much as I think the AMSL deserves to be at the 1.5pt level though, the fact that the PCSL, CSL and collegiate system represents an organizational 'step up' from local leagues, they deserve to be at a higher level than the AMSL and other metro leagues.

Having said that, I'd definitely vote for giving the larger metro leagues the same ranking as the provincial ones. As for the amount of work, I try to keep up with the USL, AMSL, CPSL and the CSL anyway, so it's not too bad to keep track of the scorers unless I get behind like I did last year. And it's easier when some of the Voyageurs send in updates from their provincial leagues like Saskatchewan. If anyone else wants to 'adopt' a league though, all help is welcome.

VMSL: http://www.vmslsoccer.com/top_goal.htm - even based on 0.5 points, Thomo should be first right now :)

FVSL: http://www.fraservalleysoccer.com/goldenboot.htm - Mike Baldwin should be tied with Niall :)

AMSL should be same level as VMSL, whatever that is, based on skill and competitiveness. Both should be higher than collegiate level.

This is all based on my experience over the years as a player.

Cheers!

Regs, I'm not sure winter leagues would count for the stats as I see a lot of names in the VMSL that play in the PCSL in the summer.

I do disagree with you on equating the VMSL to the AMSL though. If anything, the VMSL would be a little higher than EDSA (Edmonton) and CUSA (Calgary), but not the Alberta Major. I do think a 0.5 rating for VMSL is warranted and would gladly include the stats from the summer if the majority agree.

Masster, I'll put you down for 3.5 as 2.5 wouldn't be sufficiently higher than the USL.

A provincial league is in most cases stronger than a municipal league, and this is where an advantage needs to be given to said provincial leagues.

The VMSL may boast the provincial champion for the last how many years, but the true test of the strength of the provincial soccer system is the nationals. In the last 10 years, an Alberta team has won it 3 times, same for Ontario, while BC has only won it once. While VMSL teams may be dominating the provincial scene, they certainly aren't at the national level.

1997 - Edmonton Ital Canadians, Alberta

1998 - RDP Condores Quebec

1999 - Calgary Celtic SFC, Alberta

2000 - Lucania Soccer Club, Winnipeg

2001 - Halifax King of Donair

2002 - Sons of Italy, Manitoba

2003 - Calgary Callies, Alberta

2004 - Pegasus FC, British Columbia

2005 - Scarborough GS United, Ontario

2006 - Ottawa St Anthony, Ontario

As for the point system, maybe we should have a poll with a sample point system on offer. My personal recommendation (based on very unscientific following of most of the leagues in question) is

4.5pts MLS

2.5pts USL

1.5pts CSL/PCSL

1.0pt PDL/any provincial league that boasts a minimum of 3 national champions in a 10 year span

0.5pts - all other provincial leagues/CIS/CIAU/larger metropolitan leagues (although including these in the list might be too much)

Guest Jeffery S.

I think for the European Golden Shoe the leagues are rated, 2 for the strongest, 1.5 for middle, 1 for the weakest. Meaning a guy in Wales or Estonia would have to score the double of a guy in Germany or England.

Mind you in Europe only first divisions count, a guy scoring 41 in Serie B does not count, where what are lower divisions in North America are being counted.

You have weighted this much more in favour of the bigger league, and perhaps that is not fair. I personally think you should drop MLS half a point. Also I am not sure PDL is so clearly below CSL, wonder even if it could be better. Take also the fact that the most games are in fact played in the higher divisions, and you have weighted the point system even more in favour of the strongest leagues.

RC,

My point is that in your grand structure here, AMSL and VMSL (for example) should be at the same level.

2004 Alberta finished last at Nationals, that should be taken into consideration :) Also, go back more than your 10 years and you will see that BC dominated the Nationals... CSA changed a rule or 2 such that CSL players from the summer could not play for their VMSL Winter teams at Nationals when other provinces (probably Alberta) bitched about it :)

Cheers,

~Regs.

PS. all tongue in cheek :)

If I took into consideration how many times Alberta has finished last, I'd also have to take into consideration how many times they finished runners-up. I don't think anyone has that much time on their hands. And the 10 year span for me is better than going back to see what someone might have done 20 years ago...

For the points system, what I've tried to keep in mind is if a player scores 10 goals in the MLS, how many would he have scored if he played a division lower in the USL or lower in the CSL? For those that favour an MLS goal being worth 3.5 points that means 10 MLS goals equals 14 USL goals. IF MLS is worth 4 points, than 10 MLS goals equals 16 USL goals. I think it would be more like 18 (hence the 4.5), but can accept the 4pts.

UEFA can live with a goal in Spain counting as 2 and a goal in Wales counting as 1.5 a differential. Indeed, a goal in worst league in Europe is only half the value of a goal in the best. So I really don't see the point of a competition where the factor is as high as 9. Or indeed, any greater than 2. Typically, these things are about celebrating goal scoring, which is why a striker from Barry Town in Wales can share the Golden Shoe with a Striker from Barca (see 1997 UEFA). Needless to say, I do not think anyone in Saskatchewan will score 80 goals this season, so why not just chuck the national pretenses and make it a USL/MSL competition open only to Canadian players?

Thanks Gordon.

The original idea came about because of national pretenses many threads ago, so based on your opinion and the leagues we (try to) cover, it would be as follows (please correct me if I'm wrong);

2pts MLS

1.5pts USL

1 pt CSL/PCSL/PDL

.5 pt CIS/CIAU/AMSL and all other Provincial Leagues

Actually, I'd suggest:

2 points: MLS/USL

1: CSL/PCSL/PDL and All other provincial Leagues.

I'd drop university football entirely as pretty much everyone in those leagues play in the above listed leagues and I'd be tempted to do the same with the VSML for the same reason. I think everyone and their dog knows that a guy scoring 10 goals in MLS is a better striker than someone scoring 22 in the PDL so I don't really think we need to sweat the quality differences in the Leagues.

Alternatively, drop MLS and USL rate CSL/PCSL/PDL at 1.5, and the provincial leagues at 1.

Either that, or just open it up to Canucks in the top two leagues irrespective of whether their team is based in Canada or not.

Thats what I would do any way. But since I am not motivated enough to actually do it, they are but suggestions. Its your baby River, so whatever you choose is fine with me.

Finally caught up. Based on your point system Gordon, the top 5 which currently are;

1. 15.0 - 10 - Patrick Gawrys- Victoria United (PCSL)

2. 13.5 - 3 - Danny Dichio - Toronto FC

3. 12.0 - 6 - Eduardo Sebrango - Vancouver Whitecaps

4. 10.5 - 7 - Aaron Byrd - Windsor Border Stars (CSL)

5. 9.0 - 6 - Steve Frazao - Vancouver Thunderbirds (PCSL)

would be as follows;

1. 12.0 - 6 - Eduardo Sebrango - Vancouver Whitecaps

2. 10.0 - 10 - Patrick Gawrys- Victoria United (PCSL)

3. 7.0 - 7 - Aaron Byrd - Windsor Border Stars (CSL)

4. 6.0 - 3 - Danny Dichio - Toronto FC

5. 6.0- 6 - Steve Frazao - Vancouver Thunderbirds (PCSL)

The change really not all that significant in that the same 5 guys are on the list but...the guy with 3 goals drops a couple of spots. I like it frankly, I personally dread the thought of giving a Golden Shoe to a guy who may finish the season in single digits for goal scoring. 8 goals for Dichio this year would give him the highest point total ever achieved in the Voyageur Golden Shoe competition (assuming Sebrango or someone else in USL does not score 18 or more this year).

Dont know if anyone has mentioned this or not. But, many of the provincial or municipal leagues dont play anywhere near the same number of games that the USL and MLS plays. For example, MLS plays 30 games, USL 28 and teams in a league like PCSL etc will play something like 14- 18 games only. Therefore, in strange way the league strenght coefficient is already build in becasue it handicaps strikers in the lower leagues by the fact that they will not play anywhere near the same number of games. It is almost fair to leave it as it is. If a players sets a scoring record in the PCSL then, in my book, he desrerves as much recogniytion as the MLS strikers who finished somewhere in the middle of the pack amongst his peers.

I would approach it that way as far as setting the coeficients ( if needed ) .
