Finally the Bundesliga is back in action this coming weekend with an exciting title race in both divisions anticipated.

Werder Bremen lead the Bundesliga 1 and host 1st half disappointment Hertha Berlin BSC. Paul Stalteri will be starting at left back for Werder Bremen this Saturday (live on FSWC).

Despite the transfer activity over the break, Julian de Guzman will be starting in midfield as Hannover 96 host Hamburger SV on Sunday (unfortunately not televised). American striker Clint Mathis gets his Bundesliga debut in that game, playing behind Brdaric.

Tam Nsaliwa is out indefinitely as his club Jahn Regensburg host Erzgebirge Aue on Sunday in the Bundesliga 2.

All the lower divisions do not start again until later in February. Note that Victor Oppong is with our Olympic team but the Saarbrucken site is now reporting him as part of the Regional League team (1st team at Saarbrucken).

Nice addition. Canadians abroad on TV this week. Well done. Wee Elf must think I've gone nutty. VCR is wirling away upstairs. Liverpool Derby (sound off) is going to be on downstairs in twenty minutes along with internet audio of Celtic kicking the tar out of Killie. Hmmm. Wonder if there are any electronics in the condo I've left out?

Brennan gets the start for Norwich as they lead Sheffield Utd. 1-0, with Pesch starting on the bench but coming on in the 73rd minute. It will be interesting to see what happens with Sheffield as they lost one of their best players to Tottenham during the transfer window.

Dodds stays on the bench at Celtic Park as Killie get thumped 5-1. At least he's on the bench. It's a start.

Livi's match against Hearts cancelled due to field condition. Go figure. Things were just fine across town. Big Kev will have to wait for another day to try his luck against the West Lothian side .

Rocco Placentino is with the Olympic team so he missed celebrating (if not actually playing) with his Avellino teammates as they won their first match of the season on the field (to go along with one by default), 1-0 versus Triestina (it took them 24 tries!). It seems that they have been playing better lately (more points in their last 8 matches than in their first 16), coincidentally ever since Placentino joined them from the youth team. But "la salvezza" (survival) is a long way off.

EDIT: It turns out that Placentino wouldn't have been part of this match even had he been in Italy because he was loaned to Serie C1 club Teramo Calcio the day before during the final hours before the transfer deadline. More in this thread.

Julian de Guzman played 90 in Hannover's 3-2 win over Hamburg. Good he is still on the side as Mathis started and loaned midfielder Jaime as well, both of whom scored. New signings, but Julian still starts.

Their schedule is for weekend games only these weeks for those interested in possible conficts for our Olympic bid.

In Holland Richard Hastings played 90 for Maastricht who fell away 5-0 to Den Bosch. The team has won 2 games and has 11 points on 20 matches, second to last in Dutch 2nd tier.

Dani Fernandes' new team Paok won away 1-3 and stay on pace in the Greek league.

Burch was the back-up keeper today for 'Spurs. No idea what happened to Lars[?]

When Hirschfeld was moved up to No. 2, I asked on this forum if Burch was hurt, but no one seemed to know any info. My guess is that he was and now that he's recovered, Lars goes back to No. 3 in the pecking order.:(

He needs to be playing first team football asap.

Clint Mathis got all the press ("Cowboy shoots Hannover to victory") and made kicker's team of the week, but another solid outing by Julian de Guzman in Hannover 96's 3-2 win over Hamburger SV yesterday. Julian led the team in tackles won in his defensive midfield role and in fact had the same rating as Mathis (2). He continues to move up in ranking overall in the Bundesliga. Here's to a injury-free and productive game against Honduras tomorrow as Julian flies back to Germany on Wednesday for a huge match in Munich next Sunday against Bayern Munich (who themselves were terrible in a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday).

A big shout out to Tam Nsaliwa who played hurt on Sunday and came out after the 1st half but is still en route to Mexico.

Spoke to someone in the know over the break and Nik Ledgerwood is doing very well in Munich with 1860 Munchen. He will be playing with the amateurs (reserve side or U23s) the rest of the season.

Finally, not a Germany update, but Jonathon de Guzman is having a spectacular season in Holland and will play the rest of the season up with the Feyenoord U19s (some 3 years up in age), as he was leading the entire U17 league in Holland in goal scoring up to the break.

De Guzman's move to A1 is confirmed on the Feyenoord website in relation to the last B1 match report before Christmas.

Translated "in the last game that b1 finished before the winter break, there was no JdG because of holiday. the top scorer of B1 has been moved to Henk Fräsers's A1..."

Up tonight, Klukowski's La Louvière has a second leg away Cup quarter final match to Club Bruges, won 2-1 in first leg. They are holders.

Werder Bremen is away in the German Cup to Guenter Fuerth (sp).

And speaking of 0-0 ties, Everton & Liverpool do as well, in a match just shown on Sportsnet. Radzinski played the first 73 minutes, often in the 2nd half as a lone striker with no service except mile-high balls sent vaguely in his direction.

Hmmm... I thought Radz was given plenty of chances to score by his teammates in this game. He just couldn't finish. Not a game Radz will write home about.
