Mitchell Announces Panama Roster

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Youth (U-20) Head Coach Dale Mitchell has selected 18-players for a tournament in Panama City from October 13-20. The team will assemble and train in Miami from October 9-13 before departing on the 13th for Panama City where they will play three friendlies against Panama, Mexico, and Paraguay. All three teams have also qualified for the Youth Championship.

Canada is making its final preparations for the 2003 World Youth Championships which will be held in the United Arab Emirates from November 27 to December 19, 2003.

“These games are important for us to prepare for the World Youth Championship,” said Mitchell. “All three teams have also qualified and will take the games seriously.”

“They play with a similar playing style as Brazil who we play first at the Championship; this will be a bonus for us.”

Three Montreal Impact players (David Fronimadis, Andrew Olivieri, and Chris Williams) who are listed with the Olympic (U-23) team will use this opportunity to prepare for the next Olympic qualifier series against El Salvador in November.

Assistant Coach Nick Dasovic will join the camp following the Men’s World Cup friendly against Finland on October 11 in Tampere, Finland where he will also serve as assistant coach.

Some very interesting selections. First, many of the "fringe" players such as Joey Todaro, Dave Simpson, Nicolas Blicharski, CJ Peszneker, Richard Assante, and Frank Bruno have not been selected. In their place, they have taken some of the U-23's who are not eligible and a number of young players such as Haineult, Hughes and Edgar all of which you would have to think are unlikely to make the final squad (but only there for the experience). That suggests to me that with the possible exception of Ledgerwood (who was injured at the time) and Kassaye, we are going to see pretty much the same side that qualified last November in the US (minus Todaro and Churksky who did not play).

Also, I wonder where Winston Marshal is as he has been ever present on this side and is not one of the players who is playing overseas. And finally, its interesting that there is no Alim Karim and no Simon Rayner. If they were considering Karim, you would have thought they would have called him. Rayner I thought was unattached but possibly he is on trial somewhere. This leads me to believe they will go with Fernandes and the Serbian kid (who they probably didn't want to call as he is starting in Europe) as the keepers in November.

Has Daniel Fernandes left Jahn Regensburg? He is still listed with their amateur team.

Good to see David Edgar on the team. He is very young (16) but I understand he stands over 6 ft. and plays as a central defender. Will he make the Newcastle side? Who knows? Way too soon to say. But if he is good enough to be considered for this camp now, imagine what he could be at 20? And we all know how much we need central defenders in our system?

Hainault is over 6ft as well and can hold his own on the pitch. He trained all summer with the Montreal Impact and played with 4 other "Elite" teams. Its not always a given for a player to get a release from their clubs and guys like Edgar and Hainault,I'm sure are honoured to be asked to fill in. You never know...

M 9 SIMPSON, Josh University of Portland 15-May-83 Victoria BC , Simpson plays for the Hamilton Thunder

Actually Josh Simpson has a been a standout player for Victoria United for a couple of years now. We love to sing "Josh Simp-son! doo doo doo dee doo doo doo dee do-do-do-do" (to the Simpsons theme music.)

because he is only 16 years old...

Also note that Dylan Hughes (with Kaiserslautern) is now in the picture as well. Looks like Dale Mitchell is having a look at him. Rather wise of him to take the recommendation of Thomas Niendorf over any of the CSA appointees running the regional training centres.
