rkomar
I'm glad they are using a European competition to select who represents them at the Olympics. I didn't think it was fair the way they used the final standings in the previous world cup to make the selections. I didn't think it was fair the way they used the final standings in the previous world cup to make the selections. Agreed, much better. Especially if you think it is a long tournament, there are 16 teams in League A, it is a full qualifying tournament. I think it is the first edition of the women's Nations League, so they did not have this before to determine Olympic slots. But some are saying it is not the best format, for example: they play semis on a Friday night, then the final midweek. In late February. It works for the Olympic qualifying, but it is not a great date for a tournament final. Then Spain screwed up, and changed the venue of semis and final a few weeks ago, the players and those following were upset they could do that so disrespectfully, wiping out ticket sale prospects along the way. Others argue that there is clear home advantage, which looks like it was the case (France and Spain winning at home, the latter rather comfortably). Even Netherlands plays at home to decide the third place and final Olympic spot. rkomar
red card
On a 13-0 aggregate score over Uzbekistan, the Matildas are in the Olympics. 54k showed up in Melbourne after winning 3-0 in Tashkent. Japan eked out a 2-1 aggregate win over North Korea. The first leg was shifted to Saudi Arabia by the AFC after Japan complained there weren't enough flights for their fans to North Korea. There was less than 100 Japanese fans in the Jeddah stadium but there was also no North Koreans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNceCNJJ5mU The last 2 spots will be decided over 2 legs in the April window for CAF. Nigeria will play South Africa. After winning away leg 1, Zambia leads Ghana 1-0. Morocco leads Tunisia after winning away leg 1 by 2-1. Note 29/54 or just over half of CAF members didn't enter Olympic qualifying. This includes Cote d'Ivoire who spent over US$1b (with help of Chinese companies) on hosting the most recent AFCON. CIV qualified for Canada 2015 but finished last and haven't qualified for any major competition since then. CAF has put in new regs requiring any men’s teams playing in CAF competitions to have a women’s team. Unnamed Trialist

And the manipulation by Japan of that question, makes no sense to me at all. N Korea has been around and competed in women's football for a while, they should have a say in the Asian confederation. Related to Morocco, Jorge Vilda, former Spain coach, is now there. So Vilda could end up facing Spain at the Olympics, in fact the odds are fairly decent. Spain beat France 2-0 for the Nations League trophy, in another dominant performance, possession, attacks. Again, the midfield play, the accuracy of passing, the pressure on the ball, playing widely quickly, all of which are annulling traditional virtues in women's football. I think what Spain keeps from more traditional women's football is having fast strong CBs, and Salma up high, with that speed, driving CBs nuts, giving space to the other players. Two very similar goals of mids getting into the box to find passes, Bonmatí and Caldentey (who is so good, such a great player).

The articles I read said the North Korean side was not being timely with their communication of logistical matters (which of course may have included fan travel). Japan complained to the AFC that the North Korean Fed was not being transparent with them. I assume the AFC did their due diligence. England moves up 2 to be #2. USA drops 2 to #4 because they lost to Mexico who moved up 4 to #31. Biggest mover is Solomon Islands who went up 21 to 88th. In Concacaf, Puerto Rico moved up the most by 18 to be 85th. Zambia, Puerto Rico, Kosovo, Solomon Islands, Spain, El Salvador, Nepal, Lebanon, Tanzania and Saudi Arabia all achieved their highest ever points totals. Iraq joined the rankings to make it 193 countries. Now that those new rankings are out... https://www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/women The pots for Wednesday's draw should be Pot 1 France, Spain, USA Pot 2 Germany, Japan, Canada Pot 3 Brazil, Australia, Colombia Pot 4 New Zealand, CAF 1, CAF 2 If the geographic restrictions from the last edition hold, then the USA must face Germany and we have a 50% chance of facing France and a 50% chance of facing Spain. We have a 50% chance of facing Australia, a 25% chance of facing Colombia and a 25% chance of facing Brazil. The last Pot odds are the usual ⅓ for every team. Olympique_de_Marseille
Japan is also confirmed as a good candidate for a friendly match since they should be available in June/July and we won't face them in the Group Stage. Olympique_de_Marseille
Our group is: France Canada Colombia New Zealand On paper it is on the easier side. We will play our first two matches in St-Etienne and our third Group Stage match in Nice. Any travelling fans can buy their flights directly to Lyon / Marseille / Nice and avoid the madness that will be Paris. Agreed it is probably the easiest group, though Colombia is up and coming and has real stars. We also get to play the weakest team first, and stay in St Étienne and not move for the first two games. That is an easy, low-key area to visit, with many smaller city options nearby, in case anyone is going. Then it is also cool to play the home team, it will have an exciting atmosphere.
