Easther Maya Kith ( defender  WVU )  is  skipping the 2019  NWSL College Draft and signs  a pro contract with Montpellier Herault Sport Club in Division 1 Feminine  (D1F)  -- the top women's league in France.   Chris Henderson's preliminary mock draft had Maya Kith ranked at # 53  while  topdrawersoccer.com had Maya Kith ranked at # 11 in the Big 12.

Saw Montpelier play live earlier this year and was impressed with their general skill level and professionalism but I read the other day they've been hot and cold. They got pasted 5-0 by Lyon before Christmas and I noticed the Haitian Nérilia Mondesir plays for them.

Also read Montpelier just signed a fourth Swede and the current coach is leaving at the end of the year.

The Seattle Reign have relinquished  the NWSL rights to Adriana Leon.  There is apparently  some unspecified interest in her from Europe. But she'll have to go through the NWSL distribution process first to see if another NWSL side will claim her.

Matt Beard is now  coaching West Ham United in the FA WSL  and when he was running the Boston Breakers in 2017  he contacted  Adriana Leon (  then in Europe )  and brought her back  to the NWSL . Maybe history repeating itself?

Hope so, could be a great spot for her given their players and setup.

WHU was mid-table last time I checked. Pretty good for WSL debutantes. Saw them play earlier this year and thought they were a side with enough raw materials that with a bit of good caretaking could soon surprise. They had good support for an away game but the supporters were typical East Londoners and  more of the loud obnoxious swearing type than anything fun, melodic, positive or entertaining.

At likely the league minimum of about $15 thousand the citizenship would ensure she can take a second job, so she can do something extravagant like go to a movie or buy a t-shirt.

Reminded of the old acronym of pay to play, which summarizes youth soccer. Unfortunately it's true in the women's game too when you factor in opportunity cost.

Again it's what motivates you in life. If your life dream is to be a player and you see that as your career I think you'll live in the van down by the river. But if you want to be a teacher or doctor or lawyer or engineer it's a different equation, because your motivation then is to play nationally.

“I don’t think very many young girls are like, ‘Oh, I want to play professional soccer,’” Winters said. “Playing professional soccer for a lot of athletes right now is a stepping stone to the national team.”

https://www.foxsports.com/soccer/story/nwsl-womens-soccer-retirements-uswnt-121516

“It’s funny, for the girls coming from the big (soccer) schools, often times it feels like a demotion,” Winters said of rookies who were drafted, “because they’re going from locker rooms that are glorious and all these services at their fingertips to a league where you don’t know what your locker room’s going to look like, but it’s definitely not going to look like it did at their colleges.”

“But the amount of time that I put in and the money I make is not worth the emotional and physical stress to play everyday. When I was 22, 23, I was OK living like that, living out of a bag for six months at a time. But to be perfectly honest, I’m just kind of tired of that.”

Leon will wear the #19.

The Hammers also signed the South Korean captain Cho So-hyun to wear the #20, and she nailed the Irons pose:

Both will have to bust their chops to get onto the field and contribute but it will be an amazing experience for both compared to where they've played in the past. The fields, the facilities, the culture, etc. There are worse places to be a professional footballer than London.

It looks like England is the place to be for Canadian strikers. I am very happy for both Leon and Beckie that they can play for clubs that are truly professional.  The NWSL seems like another sinking ship right now.

Speaking of strikers, check this out:

I have to admit that I haven't even watched one NWSL game this year.  Not even checked the scores.  That's odd, since I watched most of the games last season.  There hasn't been much discussion here either.  Maybe I am not the only one feeling a bit apathetic towards the NWSL this year.

But who knows, maybe I'll catch the bug again after watching my first game.  How do others here feel about this season?

I haven't been following the NWSL too closely this season, but I knew that Rebecca Quinn had departed the Washington Spirit for France early in the year.  So, I was mildly shocked to see her playing for the Seattle Reign today.  I figured the Spirit would still have her rights, but somehow they lost them because she was transferred overseas.  The Reign picked her up even though she wasn't allocated and had to take up an international spot.  It all seems quite out of the ordinary.
