DJT
Canadians abroad on TV this week Since soccerTV.com no longer serves Canada, I will no longer be compiling a "Canadians abroad on TV this week" list. Guidelines for this thread [*]In this thread post match updates on all Canadians abroad for August 24-30, 2007. [*]If you find updates posted in some other thread or on the other Voyageurs forum then post them here as well, but be sure to credit the original poster. [*]If there is news that is particularly significant (eg. someone scores a big goal, someone gets injured, etc.) then feel free to begin a new thread on that topic in order to draw greater attention or start a discussion, but also post that news here. [*]Some comments on news posted in this thread are okay, but let's not let this thread go off into a long discussion. If the news already appears in another thread (as per the previous bullet) then post your comments in that other thread, otherwise if you want to say something significant or if it is likely to generate replies then begin a new thread. jonovision
Two Canadians in action in the 2. Bundesliga today. Kevin McKenna has started in central defense for 1. FC Koln who are hosting Carl Zeiss Jena. Jena scored early to lead 1-0. Rob Friend is also starting for Monchengladbach who are away to Mainz. I am a pit puzzled by the lineup listed at kicker.de, though: Heimeroth - Bögelund, Brouwers, Gohouri, Voigt - Friend, Paauwe - Touma, S. Coulibaly, Marin - Rösler That would seem to put Friend in front of the back four. As if we need another defensive midfielder.

jonovision
quote:Originally posted by Ed He is playing up front, flanked by Touma and Roesler. Thanks. That makes a lot more sense. Friend's team are down 2-0 early, while Koln has tied it up.
frank
Jena scored the 2:1 and takes the lead to half time. It will be tough for kev and especially for his coach Daum. In public he blamed the ref deciding knowingly against his team. A second defeat in a row and the discussion about him would start all over Hopefully Rob will get a second partner in the offense of M´Gladbach. Friend was subbed out in the 76th minute as BM go down 4-1.

Final score: 2-1 Bochum Imhof scored on his first touch (well, second, he took one to settle a poor clearance) and scored on a brilliant strike. The announcer on GolTV called him Canadian Swiss. Pretty good game overall.

Settled it with his left and then hit it 25+ yards into the top corner. This is Imhof's first goal in the 1st Bundesliga. In his one 2nd Bundesliga season he scored 3 times in 33 games as a starter. Last year he only played in 7 games mostly as a sub and this was his first game this year. He is scoring at a rate of about 1 goal in every 10 games which is not too bad for a defensive midfielder. He has never scored for Canada though.

The announcer for the broadcast that was carried on GolTV referred to him as "Canadian-Swiss" several times. How "Swiss" is he? I know he played there for a few years and has some blood ties to that country, but was he born there or did he grow up there or anything?
Grizzly
Yes he was born in Wil, Switzerland. I don't know what age he came to Canada but by 1992 (when he would have been 15) he was playing for a youth team in BC. 10 years ago in 1997 he was playing for the University of Victoria so he has done pretty well to make it to the 1st Bundesliga. jonovision
Video of the goal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZV_wBErfZE It's too bad you don't see the celebration because you could tell he was absolutely delighted with himself after the goal. Nice way to make an impression off the bench, too, scoring literally seconds later.

Sounds like his goal was a screamer - 25 yards out, hit the bottom of the crossbar and in. Aidy Boothroyd, the Watford manager, referred to it as "exceptional". Start fan in exile
Hirshfeld kept a clean sheet as Rosenborg defeated Vålerenga 2-0 at home. The guests started best, and Lars had to be sharp a couple of times but was never really forced to make a terribly tough save.
