Well, with all the negatives that we've seen in the last few weeks I think we should be happy with this result, a 3-0 over the home side (a team that beat us 3-0 8 months earlier). Now, one more win could be enough for us to qualify.

Go Canada

Here is an article from the Jamaica Observer. Our boys played really well in heat and in front of about 8,000 Jamaican fans and 4 or 5 Canadian fans. The article is very fair.

Canada crush Ja's Under-17s 3-0

Jamaica's dream of playing in the Under-17 World Cup in the summer suffered a serious blow when they went crashing to Canada 3-0 at the National Stadium last night.

Daniel Tannous stunned the Young Reggae Boyz in the sixth minute, followed by strikes from Jarek Whiteman in the 42nd and William Hyde in the 83rd.

The defeat pushed Jamaica to the bottom of the table of the five-team CONCACAF Under-17 World Cup qualifying tournament.

Canada accelerated to an early lead when Daniel Tannous rose gracefully to direct a glancing header past goalkeeper Oneil Wilson after being served by an outswinging cross from the left side.

Jamaica offered no immeadiate response to the early goal. Instead they struggled to lift their game making one bad pass after another.

In the 30th minute, the organised Canadian unit almost doubled the scored when Kyle Porter's firmly struck shot from 18 yards crashed violently into the crossbar.

And less than a minute later, the Canadians were on the attack again against an indecisive Jamaican defence, but goalkeeper Wilson did a good job in keeping Olivier Lacoste Lebuis 25-yard screamer out of the goal.

The North Americans, fluent and direct, went two goals up in the 42nd minute when Jarek Whiteman powered a low shot after goalie Wilson spilled Lacoste-Lebuis initial strike from outside the area.

But Jamaica had their moments in the first half. In the 16th minute, Marion Boothe was release down the right by Kenniel Hyde, but the latter's auspicious shot from the edge of the 18-yard box flew over the frame.

Though few and far between, Jamaica had another fair chance to register, but John-Ross Doyley's 38th minute grounder, which the keeper could not hold on to, could not find a friendly boot.

Though they were cleary behind the Canadians in all departments, the Young Boyz, game went up a notch in the second half.

Shortly after the interval, Hyde had a powerful shot which slammed into the horizontal. And in the 79th minute, a good-looking move by the Jamaicans almost produced a goal, but Hyde's picture-perfect right-sided cross was headed into the waiting hands of the Canadian goalkeeper.

But the Canadian bombardment continued throughout and were it not for poor finishing and good goalkeeping at times by Wilson, the visitors could have scored more goals before they actually got their third.

And goal number three came as the game fizzled. William Hyde, small in statue but quick of feet, outran the Jamaican backline to send a low, powerful shot from just inside the penalty area to beat the Jamaican custodian at his near post.

Jamaica will next play on Wednesday where they will face Costa Rica, while Canada face tournament favourites, the USA.

Here's an article doubting about Canada's chances of qualifying for Korea 2007:

Tough task for Canada

published: Saturday | April 28, 2007

CANADA'S Under-17s arrive in Jamaica confident of securing one of the three spots up for grabs after completing a three-game losing tour of Mexico.

The Canadians actually regrouped on April 20 for a one-week camp in Sunrise, Florida, before coming to Jamaica.

The 'Canucks' lost 2-1 to Mexico on March 25, 2-0 to Club America on March 27 and 2-1 to Cruz Azul three days later.

Coach Stephen Hart said: "We have played well in every game; however, playing well should also include capitalising on our chances.

"The Cruz Azul game was typical of our play as of late. We should have won the game by five goals, instead we lost. On the positive side, we are creating chances," he said.

This Canadian team, based on recent results, seems to be one of the weakest in the competition.

Last August they lost 3-0 to Jamaica, 2-1 to Mexico and drew 2-2 with Panama in the Caribbean Football Union Youth Cup.

Since then they have lost to the United States 2-1 and 1-0 in September. In fact, they have not won a game for quite a while.

It would be surprising if this side qualifies for the FIFA World Cup in South Korea in August.

The squad: Julien Latendresse-Levesque, Greg Smith, Colin Parenteau-Michon, Garrett Traversy, Daniel Tannous, Daniel Kijowski, Alex Semenets, Marcus Johnstone, Kyle Porter, Octavio Macginnis, Mohamed Sylla, Adrian Pena, Dalvir Mahli, William Hyde, Devin Gunenc, Erick Leal.

We are leading the group after Costa Rica beat T&T 2-0. Playing today Monday at 5 PM local time vs. Costa Rica precisely. With our goal difference any result is good, even a draw with goals.

With the busy schdule, 4 games in 7 days, it looks like Hart is rotating players in and out. No Street or Davis for this one with Johnstone and Semenets late subs. All four (save maybe Street who split his time with England U17s) were staples of this squad leading up to this tournament.

7 points should ensure a Top 3 spot and qualification to the U17 WC in Korea.

If you consider T&T to be the weakest link in this group and the US to be the powerhouse, then Canada needs win over T&T and a point off of the US or Costa Rica to clinch. I think it's much more realistic that we get a draw from Costa Rica, even a win. After the assault Canada unleashed on the T&T B team last summer, i just can't see the T&T A team being THAT much stronger than their other kids.

We played very well against Jamaica.

I saw the second half of the CR v. T&T game and if we play the way we did on Saturday we have a good chance to qualify. Couple of thoughts.

The Jamaican team looked incredibly nervous all game - especially the back line. Tough for kids this age to play in front of 8,000 fans that became vocal critics once Canada got the early goal (an awesome free kick by Devin that Daniel got his head on perfectly).

Second thought. We ain't going to surprise anyone anymore. Our result is the talk of the tourney down here and no one will be taking us lightly. I am in the same hotel as the US and the Costa Ricans. They are worried about us and will be bringing their "A" games.

The rest of our games are at 5pm local time not 7 like the Jamaica game. It is hot and our boys are going to have to battle de-hydration like mad. I swear the US has four bodybuilders on staff whose only job is to carry HUGE water cooler style bottles around at all times. One guy walked by me today with 7 empties of those water cooler bottles. It is gong to be gruelling.

Be proud of the kids. They are working very hard and so far have played some really nice soccer.

In fact if we, the States and CR beat T&T and Jamaica, and they only get points off each other, we are through. I think with 6 it will be enough. One more win.

It COULD be, but 7 points will mathematically clinch it. If Jamaica beats CR and we lose to CR then you get into tiebreakers at 6 points. Assuming that neither of the three lose points to T&T or get points from the US.

Tonights game is extremely important, earn a draw and we're writing our own ticket...
