Manchester United wants Hargreaves

"We have been trying to negotiate with Bayern Munich for quite a while and it's at a bit of a deadlock," Ferguson told a news conference.

"But there's no hiding the fact now that [Hargreaves] has said he would like to join United and we would like to have him."

Complicating matters is the fact that Hargreaves, 25, recently extended his contract with Bayern until 2010.

If the two clubs can't work something out by Aug. 31, soccer's summer transfer deadline, any deal would have to wait until January when European teams are allowed to resume transfer proceedings.

'We are hopeful'

"You can never be confident, but we are hopeful. We are dealing with a big club in Bayern Munich," Ferguson said. "The relationship between the two clubs has always been good."

Hargreaves left Alberta when he was 16 to join Bayern. During his time in the Bundesliga (German first division), Hargreaves helped Bayern win four Bundesliga titles, two German Cups and one Champions League title.

Hargreaves has long expressed an interest in making the jump from the Bundesliga to the English Premiership. The Canadian has played for the English national team, including at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, for the past five years.

Hargreaves was born in Calgary but is eligible to play for the English national team because his father was born in England.

He has made 35 appearances for England — 11 as a starter — but he could assume a more prominent role in the future.

Hargreaves was voted England's best player at the recent World Cup in Germany and is expected to take the place of David Beckham, who recently stepped down as captain, in the starting lineup.

Hargreaves did not dress tonight in the friendly at Barcelona, they say that is because of the same flu that kept him out on the weekend.

Owen could be the kind of player they want, as they were also looking at Marco Senna from Villareal. Ferguson clearly wants to repeat the Keane role with someone with a few years left in him.

In any case Bayern was terrible tonight, whatever happened to the Bavarian work ethic (4-0)? I know it was a friendly but la Juve played us to a 3-3 draw last year, I have never seen such a lame guest for the summer Gamper trophy.

Yeah, you kind of wonder what he was thinking when he signed that contract. The long and short is that after a crap world cup for England his name isn't mud anymore and he wants to move while his stock is still high.

At the end of the day he'll get his way. Hard to imagine him not. But Manchester U. is going to have to pay. It's as simple as that. This politicing is all a ploy by Sir Alex to keep the transfer fee more in a range he can justify for Hargreaves.

Instead of starting yet another new thread on this ditchf*** who was raised in Calgary, I looked for an old thread to resurrect.

At some point the apologists for this guy are going to just have to admit that he, simply put, is a waste of oxygen.

The fact that his antics still wind me up may be proof that I am a bitter twisted soul but that it is better than being disloyal opportunistic whore.

Bayern must sell Hargreaves

German legend Gunter Netzer insists Bayern Munich should sell Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United for £20million.

Bayern have so far rebuffed all approaches from Old Trafford for the midfielder, despite reported offers in the region of 30 million euros (£20.1million).

But Netzer believes that chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and general manager Uli Hoeness should cash in on the 25-year-old as the time is right.

"If the sum really is 30 million, then I can only say that you have got to sell Hargreaves straight away," said the former World Cup winner in his weekly Bild column.

Hargreaves is contracted to the Bundesliga giants until 2010 but Netzer insists it is worth selling him for such a substantial sum of money.

"Hoeness and Rummenigge would not be breaking their word as far as I am concerned.

"Quite the opposite - Hoeness has actually pushed the price up with his negotiating tactics.

"This amount is beyond anything ever paid for such a player."

For that amount, it would be stupid not to sell him. There has been talk around these parts about Cannavaro winning player of the year based almost exclusively on his World Cup, but this is a bid that is similarly based a World Cup performance.

The dollar, or in this case euro figure can be pretty misleading. Come with a lot of strings attached. Not unlike the Rooney deal the Toffee's got.

X pounds guarenteed. Y pounds if he makes such and such performance markers. Z pounds if Manchester U win the EPL title and Rooney features in a certain % of all league fixtures, blah, blah, blah.

So the same goes for Hargreaves. X euros guarenteed and Z euros being the ceiling if Manchester u wins Champions League, the EPL title the next 4 seasons and Owen finds a cure for Aids during his tenure.

Real and unreal numbers. Smoke and mirrors.
