Martin John, anyone know much about this player?

Sorry, not sure if this is the correct section to post this. My team back in Wales Cardiff City have just signed Martin John and from the little information I can muster up he seems to be from Ottawa (could be wrong, but the profile at UB says Lisgar CI in Ontario) and went to University in Buffalo.

That article is from 2 years ago though. Cardiffs main site doesnt have a lot of information right now but it looks as though he will be playing shortly in the Carling Cup today. Its strange for Cardiff to sign trialists, so he must have impressed, but not sure what sort of player we are looking at here. Dave Jones might just of wanted warm bodies to increase squad numbers as we are thin everywhere, especially at LB. As things stand right now the the kid (how old is he?) will be playing a bit.

Does anyone know what this kid has been doing in the meantime? It looks to be the same player from the Cardiff homepage that is on the University of Buffalo page. http://www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10335~2119019,00.html

Anyhow, just assumed somebody on here must know something, 2 Canucks on the Bluebirds now!

EDIT: Sorry, just saw his name mentioned in the Abroad thread, should of probably posted there. Feel free to delete.

From what I know, he used to play with the Ottawa Fury then moved on to U of Buffalo as mentioned. I'm not all too sure where he has played since then, but I know he has trained with Argentinos Juniors (Argentinean champions) as well as Wellington United. Comes from a Colombian, and Ghanaian background. His younger brother is my friend who played Canadian University soccer with McGill. They're both defenders.

How did he look in the Carling Cup match?

This is all I've come across so far...

"John remains an unknown quantity having played at college level in America for the University of Buffalo, New York and having a spell in club football in Argentina.

But he cut a tall, elegant figure on the pitch here, even if he had his work cut out having to deal with the speedy Gregg Pearson."

In 2008 he played with fellow Canadian senior Dominic Oppong at University at Buffalo, (along with a guy named Jon Martin, which must have made things pretty confusing)

He's around 6'0, is a left-footed D/M, and it looks as if his mother is South American (probably Colombian).

“Martin John is perhaps the best soccer player on a talented team. He provides the offensive

spark that is often needed during matches. He is an excellent dribbler and passer and has

great composure around the goal area. His pace makes teams often guess wrong as he is

capable of speeding past defenders with ease. Martin is blessed with a great left foot and

his shots can find the net. " - John Astudillo, University at Buffalo, 2008

Post-match opinions here: http://www.ccmb.co.uk/fudforum/index.php?t=msg&th=228405&start=0&rid=0&S=b78e5a930743dc42a4d881535b575c41

(mixed verdict - many pointing out he was unfit (and later injured), some thought he was terrible ("I was expecting a player that could make a 10 yard pass to a player on the same team as him", others found serviceable over the short-term)

A Cardiff fan saw him interviewed after the match,

"He says he is a LB and he was born in London, England and moved to Canada when he was 5. Lived in Canada and ended up going to University in Buffalo, after that played with Argentinos Juniors then came here.

Apparently we saw him playing the Arsenal reserves."

Is Hart using white-out again on his call-up roster, especially with Kluka potentially changing clubs, perhaps unavailable, and De jong recovering from injury? Although I get the sense that this was more of an emergency replacement situation, a Titus if you will, I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like this tried out over a Jazic or Hastings, for instance, presuming he wants to play for Canada.

I think I read somewhere that Whitecaps had him on trial at some point. Anybody remember that?

Here are my previous postings about Martin John if you are interested... http://www.cansoc.org/showthread.php?40436-The-New-Mother-Of-All-Canadians-Abroad&p=363106#post363106 and http://www.cansoc.org/showthread.php?32926-Mother-of-All-Canadians-Abroad-February-2010&p=362702#post362702

By the way the club he was first on trial with in England is "Welling United" not Wellington.

He has now been officially signed http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/cardiff_city/8906629.stm

How did he look in the Carling Cup match?

The general consensus is that he had a strong opening 30 minutes and wasnt afraid to take players on. However he looked a bit nervous at times which is understandable. He had cramp in the 2nd half but we had to use all of our subs so he was basically playing on one leg the rest of the match + 30 minutes of extra time. Some fans are writing him off but the more level headed ones are saying with some more fitness behind him he could be a good squad player.

Thanks for the report!

BTW, do you know about Canadian keeper Jordan Santiago who's at Cardiff right now? Can you tell us some info about him?

and from the same site:

Martin John: The English-born full-back, 22, has been training with Cardiff for a few weeks. The former American College player has his first professional contract. Raw, but he’s impressed in training and did well against Albion. 7 (out of ten)

Lisgar CI is a High School in Ottawa. Also the school of current Stanley Cup Champion and former Blackhawk Ben Eagar for you hockey fans.

  • 3 months later...

Cardiff boss looking to send Martin John on another loan :

"Jones would also look at moving players like Gavin Rae, Martin John, Jonathan Meades and possibly more out on loan, while Miguel Comminges, currently playing on loan at Carlisle, will leave the club when his six-month Cardiff contract ends next month."
