Slade delighted by Glovers victory

Sun 25 Jan, 06:15 PM

Yeovil manager Russell Slade hailed his side's 1-0 win away at League One rivals Southend on Saturday afternoon as an "awesome" result.Slade saw his side take an early lead but were reduced to 10 men early in the second half after Aidan Downes was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge on Johnny Herd. But goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar produced a superb performance to earn his struggling side three valuable points.

"This was an awesome result for us," declared Slade, who had no complaints about Downes' sending off. "My goalkeeper was inspired and Terrell Forbes was excellent.

"In some games this season we have played really well and lost, but here we did not play so well so to down to 10 men and get a win is great.

"Southend could have had two or three goals and I'm sure Steve (Tilson) will feel they should have got something out of the game. But we have dug in and got the result thanks to good defending and goalkeeping at crucial times."

Slade also praised Wagenaar, saying: "He doesn't come off his line for crosses but he is a good shot-stopper and that's what he has done. The saves he has made have won us a football match."

Here's another quote from the manager:

AD: There were three very important saves from Josh Wagenaar. How much has he improved his standing in your eyes with that performance?

RS: Well he doesn't come for too many crosses, does he? He's a bit of a peg, because he stays on the line! But in terms of bravery, you just can't knock him. He is very very brave as a keeper, and he is a good shot stopper, and those were the sort of qualities that were needed today, more than anything. There was one block today that was phenomenal, where he had no right to make a save from Grant, I think. But it was a terrific save and it's those sort of saves that win football matches. Today, the saves that he has made today has won us this football match.

MK Dons (Gerba) vs Leyton Orient this evening.

I agree with leafdolfan prediction....;)

Yeovil Town (Wagenaar) vs Huddersfield as well. Yeovil could be dressing only 13-14 players if the paperswork for their new loanes isn't filled in time....

L2

Gillingham (Jackson) vs Lincoln City
