Booing of National Anthem?

Recommended Posts

If ours is booed i will boo theirs. no questions. Granted, ours will come first so therefore the opportunity will probably not present its self, but anyhow.

I think, booing, is so "simple minded". It really doesn't articulate well enough how much better our country is.

IF anything i think we should just sing our anthem over theirs the first time, and sing it again the second time.

I know I also brought it up in a post before, but I saw a basketball game once where everyone in the stands was issued a newspaper, and when the team was announced for starting line ups, all 15,000 people held a paper over their face and pretended to read.

Much funnier than booing.

I don't understand why booing an anthem is disrespectful. What is the difference between that and booing the team as they come out of the tunnel? The anthem represents the country, and so too does the team, so why is one disrespectful and the other not? I think if our anthem is booed, there anthem should be too. Besides, when Oh Canada is booed in other parts of the world, I fully know that it is for competitive reasons, and not an attack against my country.

Without jumping all over me, I would like to open this discussion as to why it is actually considered disrespectful.

In my mind booing the team is about sports and booing the anthem is political.

^ Agreed 100%, Soju. When we boo or swear at the players on the pitch, it's because we're doing our part to put them off their game. Booing a national anthem is targetting the people and principles of that country, and it has nothing to do with the competition itself.

Booing a national anthem is simply pathetic.

Isn't that fromt the "shudder" horrible hockey movie Mystery, Alaska with Russel Crowe?

my 2 cents. Total silence for the Jamaica anthem. Sing as loud as possible for the Canadian one..

Ok guys, I think this is something we need to agree on.

As I'm sure we all know, the Canadian national anthem is often booed which I think is pathetic and disrespectful, especially when it's done in Canada.

Anyways my question is A) do we boo the Jamaican national anthem,

B) sing louder in an attempt to drown it out

C) ignore it to not bring ourself down to that level.

Anyways I hate being outchanted in our own backyard and am glad and hopeful that something will finally be done on August on our quest to the WC.

What do you guys think?

Well the answer is obvious to me!!! SING LOUDER AND PROTECT THIS HOUSE

As much as I would like to CLUB or throw beer at ANYONE disrespecting

our national anthem and country, it would be in very bad form to

introduce poor manners to our younger (U10) Voyageurs.

The best way is to out-sing, out-cheer, and beat them on the playing pitch.

Besides, throwing away good Canadian beer (Keiths, Moosehead, etc)

would be foolish, wasteful, and a travesty at that. ;)

They do the newspaper thing at Cornell hockey games. Then they throw the papers on the ice. youtube it. It's pretty funny.

Well they're going to play the Jamaican one first and I have no beef with Jamaica. I have a lot of Jamaican friends. I wouldn't boo their anthem, no matter what happens at BMO. I will yell at their players, I will sing rude things to their team and if anyone in yellow gets in my face and direspects my country in my country there may be problems.

cheers,

matthew

well it's because your booing someone... non superficially. It's pretty much the same as booing someones religion or anything else they were born into, just shows the booer is like school on a saturday......no class.

maybe we could do something funny though, like bring spray cheese cans and spray anyone pathetic enough to boo a national anthem

I'd be interested to see what BMO Field's security policy is on spray cheese.

I have no problems with booing a National Anthem at a soccer match. Here is why, (note this is just my opinion on the matter)

On the day of the match I hate everything about that team...their country is sh*t, their fans (who may be great blokes normally) deserve to be beaten and I hate everyone of the players, we are going to war. Our side against theirs. Our supporters against theirs.

To me being polite and nice at a football match is weak. We WANT these teams and fans afraid to come to the match for what might happen...(not condoning violence just saying you never know). We want BMO and the other stadiums we play in to become a fortress. We want the opposing supporters to feel like they aren't welcome and that they aren't wanted.

If we have to boo a National Anthem to send the message....so be it. We want to go to the world cup...we won't get their if Canada has to play all 6 matches on the road...to be out supported in our backyard is shameful. I may be new to the boards but I'm not new to football we need to take this up a level.

Ok maybe not boo the national anthem we should should chant through it though

Many people refer to Canadians as being very polite people and yeah, I think for the most part we are, so no one would expect us to boo another countries national anthem.

Call me naive, but I wouldn't expect that from any country no matter where I travelled to for a match. It's rude and not at all necessary. I think that we should give the opposing team, be it Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, or where ever, their minute of pride for their country and allow them to sing their anthem uninterrupted.

It's Carlberg piss on tap, (sorry no offence towards to Carlsberg fans), but agreed, I wouldn't waste my beer on some tool with the grren and yellow.

Let's show some class.

Stand quietly for the enemy anthem, no applause.

Sing loudly for our own.

After that, nothing's off limits.

Whither Canada,

Well said. Simple, plan, and very, very true. Once the anthems are over, it's for blood.

I actually would not mind to find out the enemy is sitting across from us in 105.

its not once the anthems are over its war...its once the day of the game arrives its time...we shouldn't stop chanting for anything except O Canada....when they attempt to sing their NA we should chant and sing overtop...this is our house sing your song somewhere else.

This...last I checked Canadian respect has just got our stadiums overrun by opposing fanbases who cheer louder than us when they have 1/3 of the people there. Its time for that to change.

All this talk about booing anthems is pure nonsense. I will be absolutely shocked if any Jamaican fan shows any disrespect to Canada, Canadian National Anthem, Canadian players or the Canadian fans...its simply not in our make up. We are more likely to engage the fans in some good banter, but not direspect. I am sure any Canadian fans who have even been to Kingston can attest to these statements. There maybe some self hate going on in our (to use a term I have seen on these boards) Shanty towns - but on the whole we are respectful of others. For those expecting trouble from the Jamaican fans - sorry to dissapoint you - there will be none. The guys there, especially the ones driving up from NY and flying in from Jamaica are coming in for a good time - espcially knowing how accomodating the Canadian female population can be...

Hope you're right.

I only brought this up because the booing of our anthem has been done before. Not saying by Jamaicans, but saying in general.

I for 1 will not be booing the Jamaican national anthem.
