[I'm still disgusted at Brazil's behaviour in the U19 game in Edmonton. I wish Pal Hal was still alive and running the BMO like he ran the Gardens when he wouldn't let the Russians play there]

Canadian women to debut at BMO Field against Brazil

Canada's women's national team will be making its debut at BMO Field this Thursday 10 July. For the debut, Canada has invited none other than Brazil, the runner-up at last year's FIFA Women's World Cup China 2007. The Canada-Brazil match will kickoff at 19.00 ET (7pm) at BMO Field in Toronto, ON.

Tickets for the Canada-Brazil match go on sale next Thursday 29 May at 10.00 ET (07.00 PT). Tickets range in price from $15-$40. Tickets are available via ticketmaster.ca.

"Brazil has erupted into one of the power houses in women's soccer over the last four to five years," says Canadian coach Even Pellerud. "The women's team is developing the same international status that the men's team has always had."

The match, which is being presented by Winners, will pit Canada's top player Christine Sinclair against the world's top player Marta.

"Against Marta as the superstar of women's soccer today, alongside numerous outstanding individual artists, we will count on our team unit and our work committment to beat this team," says Pellerud. "Both teams are intensively preparing for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament, so this encounter will serve as one of the major tests before Beijing."

Both Canada and Brazil have established top-four finishes at a FIFA Women's World Cup - Canada in 2003 (4th) and Brazil in 2007 (2nd). Both countries qualified for the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament earlier this year.

Overall, Canada has a record of three wins and three losses against Brazil. Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck Cominco, was recently ranked 9th in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Brazil was ranked fourth in the most recent ranking.

I cant wait for this one, hopefully we get a nice day...

So what are people planning to be the 12th Woman in the stadia ?

Is it the intent of the CSA and the OSA to be polite, or will it be a true steaming cauldron ?

What about the deep seated myths and fears the brasilians carry inside them ...is it the intent of the CSA to ensure we confront those fears ?

Two simple suggestions.. one, the CSA have contact the Voyageurs and have them hand out a simple ...from the dollar store clicker.. the ones that sound like frogs... from your youth...or does anyone have loon calls ? two, the CSA invite a Mohawk Shaman to appear pre-game and ensure the ground is properly prepared for Canada's play....conducting a purification ritual as the Brasilian team does its warm up... with culturally appropriate dancers .... supporting the purification of the grounds for Canada's play...

Canada needs to step up and make home games true tests of will and character for our opponents, I am sure someone from the CBF will be travelling to Our Lady of Aparecida prior to the trip to Canada.

Crazy ? perhaps.... but then if its done and ten thousand frog clickers click ...what is the affect ? Or if the loons call out ?

PS the CSA should talk to the trumpeter from the Olympiques do Hull and get him to the game ....and miked up.

Allez les rouges...

Brazilian women's soccer captain will miss Beijing Olympics due to injury

BRASILIA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The captain of Brazilian women's national soccer team, Aline Pellegrino, confirmed on Monday that she will be forced to sit out of the Beijing Olympics due to a knee injury.

Pellegrino, who twisted her right knee and tore a ligament last week in a match against the United States in South Korea, had hoped that the diagnosis would allow her to play in the Olympics. However, the team doctor claimed that her injury will not heal in time for her to play.

Brazil's head coach Jorge Barcellos lamented the loss of Pellegrino, but said he believed that the team will be able to play at a high level even without their star fullback.

Pellegrino scored one of Brazil's two goals against Ghana that led to their guaranteed spot in the Beijing Olympics.

She is currently in Brazil where she will undergo further exams and is expected to go through an surgery. The player will need an estimated six months to fully recover.

If she didn't it would kind of put egg (and a false advertising claim) on the CSA's face given their press release above.

Umea play through to October, and they have a game on the 10th against one of the worst teams in Sweden. They don't need her, so I imagine she'll get released (we all know the WNT believes in releasing club players), and if she does I wouldn't be surprised to hear we're paying the plane ticket somehow. The contractual deal with Brazil would be interesting to read.

Found that article again & I was wrong in that Marta is under contract until end of 2008. I get the impression from the articl that the WPS is talking to Marta prior to the end of her contract w/ Umea.

http://www.womensprosoccer.com/newsitem_ektid3104.aspx

Following the allocation of U.S. Women’s National Team players, rights to a number of international standouts will be dispersed. On Saturday, the Board of Governors heard a report regarding the status of over 50 internationals, but the media and fans are salivating over one name in particular.

“There are so many (international players) that we want to see here and Marta is obviously on that list,” said Antonucci, who noted that many of those global standouts are available to join WPS in 2009. “Having the world’s best players join our domestic stars in competing in WPS will clearly enhance the quality of our league.”

Marta is currently showcasing her incredible skills for Umeå, a Swedish club. The Brazilian attacking magician’s contract expires at the end of 2008 meaning a window soon opens for a WPS team to begin negotiations for her services.

“She’s available as of July 1, so that’s when we can really start to move and we will to see where Marta is and her interest,” said Antonucci, who has had no conversations with the 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year. “What we’re hearing is that she is going to be interested in talking with us.”

After the dispersal of U.S. Women’s National Team and international players, WPS will hold a three to possibly six round player draft following the Olympics. In late 2008 and early 2009 further supplemental drafts will be conducted that will include players who have just completed their NCAA eligibility.

^not good news for the BMO friendly.

Here's the full story -

Damallsvenskan: New draw for Umeå as Marta is shown off the field

LDB FC Malmö - Umeå IK 2 - 2 (0-1)

Malmö: Stephanie Öhrström - Emelie Ölander, Malin Levenstad, Emma Wilhelmsson, Lina Nilsson - Pavlina Scasna (72 Emma Stålhammar), Dora Stefansdotir, Nilla Fischer, Therese Sjögran - Maria Aronsson (63 Therese Lundin), Manon Melis

Umeå: Ulla-Karin Rönnlund - Anna Paulsson, Karolina Westberg, Johanna Frisk, Frida Östberg - Lisa Dahlqvist, Mami Yamaguchi, Emmelie Konradsson (46 Emma Åberg-Zingmark) - Marta (80 Red card), Madeleine Edlund (89 Sofia Jacobsson), Johanna Rasmussen

Goals: 0-1 Madeleine Edlund (27), 1-1 Manon Melis (52), 1-2 Marta (59), 2-2 Dora Stefansdottir (89)

Attendance: 1,630

This was Umeå's match. They won the midfield, shut off Malmö's wingers and left Malmö's target player Maria Aronsson almost isolated from the rest of her team. Malmö as a team seemed over all much less focused than in the match a year ago, when even Jeglertz gave them the moral victory, in spite of defeating them 2-1.

Malmö's attacks were few and short, while Umeå and Marta in particular tested Malmö's defense relentlessly. But Malmö's goalkeeper Stephanie Öhrström once again showed that she is not just a reserve for Caroline Jönsson and Malmö's defense made Umeå's attack work hard and mostly in vain. Madeleine Edlund tapped in the first goal on a rebound, she has an almost Pohlerish ability to be at the right place at the right time, in one of few less than stellar performances by the home defense.

There was no change in the match picture after the recess, but Manon Melis ran through Umeå's defense and equalised against the run of the play. Marta restored order with a great long shot a few minutes later and Umeå looked good for three points.

Then it happened. Malmö's defender Emma Wilhemsson and Marta tangled into each other and went down. When Marta didn't get free fast enough - and it didn't look like Wille was helping much - she kicked the Malmö defender in the stomach. Malmö's captain Nilla Fischer rushed over, pushed Marta and looked like she would like to settle the dispute without any referee interference. A behaviour that earned her a yellow. Marta, of course, got a red card. And the Malmö home crowd went all Frankfurt on her, as UIK Fans' Anders Andersson put it.

I don't think Malmö being one player up had much influence on the rest of the match - the stayed four in defense - but psychologically the incident was important. Malmö now pressed hard for an equaliser and again it was Manon Melis who made the difference, running away from both defense and goalkeeper to serve Dora Stefansdottir with a no-miss opportunity.

Umeå's assistant coach Steve Galloway was deeply disappointed: "We owned the match. We can't really play much better than this". But Malmö had the necessary luck.

Nobody questioned the red card after the match, not even Marta. She has become much better controlling her temper over the years, but this time she failed and she knew it. She and Emma Wilhelmsson shook hands and made up after the match and Wille even could see Marta's side "She can play ugly at times, but she takes a lot of beating during a match."

Weird. Got the red on the 11th, missed the match on the 14th but played on the 17th. Was it appealed? More important though, they play a strong Gothenburg side on the 9th of July.

So of course the coaching point here is ? Just wonder if Even has any tactic to encourage Marta in the Olympics to lose control ?

Oh yeah, she's a loose cannon. Little Edmonton 2002 recap:

"The partisan crowd began to boo Finish referee Anri Hanninen, who seemed unwilling to show the yellow card for anything less than a forearm shiver...

Sinclair waited patiently to take the penalty kick. Two Brazilian players walked up to the astonished Sinclair and bumped her repeatedly. Hanninen rushed over to shoo them away. Then one of the Brazilian entourage, a man that nobody could seem to identify, walked on to the pitch, yelling at Hanninen. As Hanninen turned, another Brazilian player had words with Sinclair and "brushed" past her by accident, on purpose.

Where the Canadians were at this time, I have no idea, but in the future, if my star player is about to take a potentially game winning kick, and the other team is using the sort of mental warfare the CIA normally reserves for shoe bombers, I'm standing between her and them.

Finally, things seemed to calm down enough for Sinclair to take the penalty. Just after Hanninen placed the ball on the spot though, Marta raced forward to get into Sinclair's face one last time. Hanninen again had to intervene.

Despite looking as cool as possible through this storm Sinclair, must have been unnerved. The tournament's leading scorer pushed the ball not nearly wide enough and Giselle dove to get her hand on it. To add insult to injury, after taking the shot, two Brazilians slammed into Sinclair knocking her to the ground and gave her a Portuguese version of "in yo' face."

The nasty tone continued as twice the Canadians sent Brazilian strikers tumbling in the box, but no penalties were called. This brought the pitch invader back a second time and he was chased off."

Her red card with her club team has absolutely NO impact on her games with Brazil so will not affect her appearing at BMO. Apples, oranges.
