Missing Info:

PCSL - uly 17 Kamloops City game to be rescheduled and July 19 Thunderbirds game is missing scorer. As well Vic United is listed as winning 5-2 on July 2, but only 4 goals are accounted for - 2-Dean Anderson, Steve Scott, Kellen Holden.

CPSL - August 12 games between London City vs St. Catherines Wolves and Durham Storm vs Oakville Blue Devils were postponed. Same with Aug 14 game between Oakville Blue Devils and Hamilton Thunder. Same with Sept 19 Durham Storm and Toronto Croatia, Sept 20 Toronto Supra and Laval Dynamites game, Sept 21 Toronto Croatia and Vaughan Shooters game, August 16 between Durham Storm and London City, August 28 Toronto Croatia and Vaughan Shooters, August 30 Toronto Croatia and London City. October 1 game between Laval Dynamites and Durham Storm was awarded to Laval as a 2-0 victory.

I will take care of the AMSL list, so anyone wishing to take responsibility for any of the other provincial leagues and updating them after every round of matches would be great!

Neither am I.

The list is based on 2pts for USL, 1.5 for PCSL, CPSL, PDL, 1 point for CIS/CIAU, AMSL and then .5 for all other provincial leagues.

I'm thinking that the USl should go up to 3 pts, PCSL, CPSL, PDL to 2pts, the college/university teams, the AMSL and the Quebec league to 1.5 and then all others to 1 point.

It's not perfect, but it's a start. Maybe we should do a vote.

this is a great Idea, but I think we should just buy a trophy, and give it to the best scorer from Voyageurs Cup. So Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver) I think its a great idea and these trophys cost what $20-40 TOPS. Thats liek .50cents from each person. The PCSL, CPSL and PDL should not be considered :)

Your system is like the Uefa Golden Shoe in terms of the point system. I think it is just fine, keep it that way.

That has been discussed in the past. We sort of decided against it. But it remains a possibility. Though there could be a problem if there are two or more people tied.

Personally, I'd rather not bother with a top-scorer trophy of any type (I mean, we can celebrate them, but not bother with an actual physical trophy). If we want to award an actual trophy to a player then I'd prefer a "Voyageurs MVP" type thing, whether it's based on NT perfomance or club performance.

Why can't we have both?

In terms of marketing soccer in Canada, it is vital to focus on the areas that are most exciting to the general sports fans and goal scorers provide that easy marketability. It is a very objective and quantifiable category since it depends solely on goals scored. I will try to compile the complete list of goal scorers from the provincial leagues and above this year and then we can have a discussion at season's end about the format for next time.

As for the Voyageurs MVP, this is where I think it should be limited to the USL teams and NT members and it is something that would be very subjective. We would definitely have to have a vote on this one.

The ultimate measure of the provincial leagues in Canada is how well they fare at the CSA National Championships. In our case, the results of the Challenge Cup is what we need to compare. I am including the list below, but in summary and using a 10 year span, Alberta has won 4, Quebec 2, Manitoba 2, BC 2 and Nova Scotia 1. Historically, BC has dominated the competition, but before their triumph in 2004, they went 8 years without lifting the trophy. Using a 5 year span, Manitoba has 2, BC, Alberta and Nova Scotia all have 1. It will be interesting to see how well Manitoba teams do in the next couple of years.

My opinion is that any province winning 3 or more championships in a 10 year period should be elevated to the same level as the CIAU. Again it is only MY opinion as none of the ranking points have been set in stone.

The Challenge Trophy

The Executive of the Dominion of Canada Football Association in 1912 invited His Royal Highness, The Duke of Connaught to become the Patron of The Association. The invitation was accepted and His Royal Highness subsequently donated a trophy called "The Connaught Cup". It was emblematic of the championship of Canada. In 1926, The Football Association of England donated a beautiful trophy to the Dominion of Canada Football Association "The Challenge Cup" and it replaced the Connaught Cup as the trophy for the National Championship.

What makes the AMSL so special as to get more points than the rest of the country's provincial leagues.

Good point, it does seem a bit arrogant[:I], especially since the AMSL representative did not win the National Amateur championship last year.

Part of the apparent reason is that Alberta is a soccer rich area (the economy has allowed for a comparitively high and steady influx of immigrants who usually are the backbone of local programs) that now doesn't have professional or semi-professional clubs. In addition, the clubs in the Premier League of the AMSL have been incredibly enriched with the majority of the past players of the A-League Calgary and Edmonton teams. I strongly believe that most of these clubs would now hold their own in the CPSL and PCSL, but without a true Open Cup to test this theory, it will remain debatable. The best proof of the pudding will come out in how dominant, if at all, the Alberta representative will be in the National Amateur Championship this fall.

Any system of rating players from different is by it's very nature arbitrary. Our website has been mocked here and elsewhere for following, suposedly arcanely, Canadian players in obscure foreign and domestic leagues, but I believe any attention in any form to our players is always a service. It is also what being a true soccer fan is about.

Our messages crossed, Sergio, but some of our ideas were similiar.

I should add to what you have said: many present first string players from CIAU universities from both Alberta and elswhere tried to make the AMSL Premier League squads, but were unable to and are playing now at lower levels this summer in Alberta. In fact, I would argue, having seen both AMSL and CIAU matches, that AMSL is of a much higher level.

I think that we should keep your formula (which was the subject of previous extensive discussions) for this year, nobody is claiming it is rocket science[8)].

I agree that the calibre of play at some provincial leagues are higher than some at the college/university level, but that's a whole other discussion that I'm hoping we can discuss at a later time.

United Weston (1924,1926) of Winnipeg is still around. They must be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, club in Canada.

Callies have been around since 1904 and actually won the Challenge Cup/Dominion in 1905-7 I think.

Not too many older than that.

AMSL is superior to CIAU and always has been. This year even more so.

Victoria United in British Columbia celebrated their centenary in 2004. The club currently plays in the PCSL. See the current issue of World Football Pages for a thumbnail history of this storied club.

Victoria United legends past and present

As Victoria United prepares for the 2005 PCSL campaign it can look back

with pride at 2004, a year of spectacular achievements. The club distinguished

itself by being only the second club in the history of the PCSL and the

first men’s club to earn the triple crown by winning the George Cambidge

Memorial League Cup, the Sheila Anderson Memorial (Challenge) Cup

and the J. F. Kennedy Trophy. This had only been achieved previously by the

Seattle Hibernian & Caledonian Saints women who, in 2001 won the

Jacques Moon Memorial League Cup, the Dave Fryatt Challenge Cup and

the Kevin McAdams Memorial Cup.

During 2004 Victoria also celebrated 100 years of history and 10 years in the

PCSL. The original Victoria United was formed from the merger of the Victoria

Association Football Club and the Capital City Athletic Association, and

played in the Association Football League as Victoria United for the first time

in 1904-1905. Victoria United earned it’s first trophy, the Garrison Cup, in

their inaugural 1904–05 season. This success evidently stimulated interest

because in 1906 the club had enough players to enter two teams in the league,

the Rovers and the Wanderers. By 1908 Victoria United was playing in the

newly formed Pacific Coast Association Football League.

In 1950 an all star select team came to Victoria from England comprising

mainly players who had not made the England team playing in the World Cup

that year. All were first class players, including the most notable Stanley

Matthews. He had not been chosen for the English team because the selectors

thought he was too old, (then in his mid 30’s). The English Selects faced a local

all-star team featuring 70% Victoria United and the rest from the local district

league. The English squad prevailed 3–2 before an enthusiastic crowd of 4,700

at the old Athletic Park, yet it was an exhilarating experience for all.

Although Victoria changed strips over the years, United players have always

dressed in blue and white. The early club crest comprised a maple leaf with the

words Victoria over the top and United below. United has endured various permutations

during its 100 year existence, much of which are reflected in the list

of club achievements, including winning the original Kennedy Cup tournament

Been trying to get Saskatchewan PSL stat to help out the list. Still trying [B)] with no luck. I really don't like the .5 for the remaining provincial leagues. They should all be 1.0 at worst, and if you really need to give extra love to AMSL, which I don't think warranted, but whatever, then make it 1.5 like CPSL and the BC leagues. I actually don't think any provincial league warrants elevation over the others but I see that has been discussed to death so we can leave it at that.
