Canada Falls to Mexico 2-0

Culiacán, Mexico – Canada’s U17 National Team battled for a spot in this fall’s World Championships this evening but unfortunely couldn’t overcome another backbreaking goal in the early moments of the first half. Mexico added to its total in the dying minutes of the contest, sealing its ticket to the World Championships and sending Canada home empty handed.

The young tricolores started off the encounter brightly and in the 7th minute had its first half-chance. A long diagonal ball from the left found a streaking Mexican winger at the right side of the penalty area. The Mexican took one touch and then hammered his shot off the side netting from a difficult angle.

Five minutes later, however, the Mexicans would grab a lead they would not squander. Cesar Villaluz spun freely in the middle of the field and decided to try his luck from well over 35 yards. The shot seemed to surprise Lorenzo Borella (Brossard, QC) and the young Canadian had to scramble across his goal. Unfortunately the shot skipped under the young keeper’s outstretched arm and settled into the back of Canada’s goal.

Not soon after though, Canada’s Shane Lammie (Toronto, ON) had two chances to equalize but on both occasions was rushed into shooting early.

The first saw Lammie out-muscle two defenders near the right touchline and then wheel away from both Mexicans. When the Toronto-native closed in on the right corner of the area he decided to take the shot early but his curling effort just sailed over the upper left corner.

Lammie then reacted quickest to a through ball from Marcus Haber in the dying moments of the half but as he toed the ball by the goalkeeper there was a tremendous collision at the penalty spot. Lammie certainly took the worst of the challenge and adding to Canada’s injury woes, the young striker had to be carried off and did not return.

Canada then made all three of its changes in the second half but could not break down the Mexican defense, who knew full well that a draw would be more than enough to see them to Peru.

In the dying minutes of the game, Mexico would grab another after a scramble in the Canadian area was bundled over the line by Ever Guzman Zavala, essentially sealing the victory and the Group B title for the Tricolores.

“I certainly couldn’t ask anymore of the players tonight”, said a dejected Canadian Head Coach after the match. “We played a solid game of football tonight but could not get the result we needed against a very talented Mexican team who will certainly raise a lot of eyebrows this fall in Peru (at the World Championships).”

Once again starting the tourney off on the wrong foot with a 2-0 loss to Honduras really hurt us badly here,, same as World Cup Qualifying with the senior team and the home loss to Guatemala which we were very ill-prepared. Although this Under 17 team was much better prepared, if you look at the Hondurans other games, 3-0 loss to Mexico and 1-1 tie with Haiti (both of our results were better vs those teams) we really should of had a much better result vs Honduras,, maybe the boys were nervous and needed a game under their belts,,, who knows ??? Losing Shane Lammie for the second half in this crucial game against Mexico must of really stung as well because out of all the games this team has played together in the past year, he has scored many of their goals and for the most part been their offence.

In another thread about the U17 team, someone suggested the reason that only 3 players on the team were from Quebec may have to do with citizenship. Does anyone know if that is true? It doesn't make much sense that 3 are from Quebec which won the U16 all-star championship last summer, and 8 from Ontario which placed second and five from BC which placed fifth. Don't BC and Ontario have equally high immigration as Quebec?

It isn't an immigration question, it's a matter of who in a particular team is a citizen of Canada. It can be a question of luck, like a team with a lot of foreigner just arriving in Canada.

But I don't think it's a question of immigration in this case. Like I said in the other thread Nunez from Quebec was injured so we have at least one more from Quebec and another player from Quebec (don't have his name) couldn't be there due to an injury suffer a long time ago(so we have 5 Quebec players).

Also, sometimes individual talent will make the difference. Bourgault (called the best Canadian player in the Italian tournament by the Italian press) and Nunez (Hart sounded very disappointed when discussing a few key injuries prior to the qualifying tournament) were two of the top attacking players on the team. Mayard was also a staple during the camps, but must have had a poor performance vs. Honduras as he was benched for the next two.

Another player called Mario Panizzon from Quebec participated in many of the camps, but did not make the final cut.

Mario Panizzon is an Edmonton, Alberta product in the Prairie NTC run by Sean Fleming (assistant coach to Stephen Hart for the Mexico qualifiers). He got a goal in the first April friendly vs Guatemala coming on as a sub for Shane Lammie in the 70th minute. Also played for 20 min in the second friendly vs Guatemala. No idea why he was not in the squad.

I think you are right. I asked the Provincial coach here who attended the tournament in BC about the players. He said Quebec had the top scorer and another player both really good players who were not Canadian Citizeans. he also said that Lang, Haber and Maras did not play for Bc in the tournament.
