VANCOUVER , BC, March 1, 2005 – The Vancouver Whitecaps FC Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, today announced the 2005 Men’s pre-season schedule. The Whitecaps will play a series of games across British Columbia which includes stops in Surrey , Victoria , Tsawwassen, Langley and Chilliwack .

“I believe the pre-season is an excellent opportunity for the Whitecaps to connect with our fans across the province,” said Lenarduzzi. “As an organization we are consistently trying to find new ways to reach our fans while showcasing the high-level of soccer throughout BC.”

At a media conference at Trinity Western University today at which Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations Bob Lennarduzzi announced the 2005 pre-season schedule for the Whitecaps senior men’s team, Lennarduzzi also announced that the club has an offer in to buy land in Surrey. The plan is to build a new soccer complex comprising six soccer fields, half of which will have artificial turf surfaces plus a clubhouse complex including dormitory facilities sufficient to accommodate whole teams.

When asked where the subject land was situated, Whitecaps Communications Manager Nathan Vanstone claimed not to know but did say it was close to the Skytrain to ensure easy access to Swangard Stadium in Burnaby and that the club has been involved in negotiations with the City of Surrey for some months now. No further details were forthcoming.

This is in addition to the new facilities built by the club on Burnaby Mountain at Simon Fraser University. It seems this new complex is intended to serve the youth teams in the club and the community. Way to go Whitecaps!

greg kerfoot is quickly going down as one of the greatest canadians ever in my books! well done greg to promote such a brilliant game and expand a once great club and trying to make them a rags to riches club. here's to a long and succesful tenure.

(hopefully the facilities aren't used just by the surrey soccer association - those rat bastards!! i kid, i kid)

Note: Included is a rant on sports hyperbole.

Good for the Whitecaps on their initiative, but their staff are in dire need of a geography lesson. Surrey , Victoria , Tsawwassen, Langley and Chilliwack are not "across British Columbia". In fact, it should only take one tank of gas to get in all five matches.

They want to use the terms "across British Columbia" or "across the province" then let's see exhibitions in Fort St. John, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, Cranbrook and Salmon Arm.

In their defence they are staging a regular season game in Kelowna, but they likely think it is in Alberta.

Andrew, that wording was the product of professional 'Communications' specialists.

Strictly speaking it is not untrue, in order to get from one place to the other one must needs travel 'across British Columbia'.

Just like 'New and improved Tide' or '40% less fat' ;)

Touche (sorry, can't find the accent for the "e" on this stupid keyboard)!

Grew up in the Kootenays and believe me, if the communications specialist is from the Slower Brainland that is what they would believe to be "across British Columbia."

Hey I am not quarrelling with your point about professional sports hyperbole, just having a bit of fun at the expense of the paid PR guys ;). Nathan Vanstone from the Whitecaps is a good guy I hasten to add, so far one of the best they've had.

Anyway, this is much better than most previous pre-season schedules in terms of getting out into the community. Also, I think the 'Caps have to look to who their ticket buying customers are. As a pro organisation they are first and foremost a business after all.

Mr Kerfoot is also "aggressively" looking for the land to build his 15-20 thousand seat stadium. At last word, he's off the Main & Terminal site, which would have been great because it's close to the Main Street Skytrain Station. HOWEVER, my "sources" have told me the new chunk of land he's zero'd in on is even BETTER than Main and Terminal, with one club employee calling it "a Crown Jewel". (I'm thinking that could only be the finish line of what used to be the indy track.) It's right across the street from GM Place, and with Indy gone for good, the land sits empty. That would be prime! Lets just hope that it gets done in time for July 2007...because the clock is ticking. Somebody told me he went to the UK to see what the stadiums look like over there. Two in particular...the new grounds at Reading and Darlington.

Ugh, let's hope we don't copy the Madjeski Stadium in Reading. Those plastic, cookie-cutter stadia are crap.

Still, beats ol' Swanny! :D

While beggars can't be choosers B&W, you're right...there is somewhat of a "generic" feel to the newer grounds. My favourite grounds are still the old classics like White Hart Lane, Selhurst Park and Fratton Park Portsmouth with the old tudor style entry.

One thing's for sure...a Greg Kerfoot stadium will be guaranteed of 2 things; no running track, and natural grass.

By the way, has anyone seen the pics for the new stadiums of FC Dallas and Chicago (MLS). You can see them by going to their sites and while both are nice, they feature "stages" at one end of the field behind the goal. I think the new Chicago Park is spectacular, and would be exactly right for Vancouver (without the stage)

Reading and Darlington are several times better than any ss stadium we have in Canada (do we actually have one in Canada?) and look great to me.

Every other city (Calgary, Winnipeg, Hamilton, etc.) should get stadiums like Nene Park, home of Rushden & Diamonds, only an all seater.

That's a beauty! That would be perfect for smaller market teams. Does anyone know how much it cost to build Nene Park?
