Beirne: Canadian quotas unlikely in CanPL

    Duane Rollins

It appears that there will not be a Canadian quota in the CanPL.

Paul Beirne indicated as much in a post on the Voyageurs discussion board. However, he followed it up by stressing that the league would still be vastly comprised of Canadian players. That would be accomplished by putting a restriction on the amount of foreign players permitted, rather than by putting a specific number on Canadian roster spots.

The information written by Beirne, corresponds with what CSN has been told by various people over the past two years or so.

From the beginning, CSN has been told that there was a resistance to requiring X amount of Canadians per team.

That opinion is informed by the CFL owners, who has experience with the "non-import" rule in the CFL. They feel that the rule artificially inflates the salary of Canadians and puts a financial strain on their ability to build the best rosters possible. TFC argued the same thing back in 2008, after having to vastly overpay for Canadians in year one.

Although restricting "imports" creates the same end result as requiring x amount of Canadians, it isn’t thought to have the same impact on salaries.

However, as Beirne wrote, it's also always been stressed that there is no way this league isn't going to be made up of a majority of Canadian players. The economics of the league will dictate it.

A better question to ask is whether there will be anything put in place to ensure the percentage of Canadian playing minutes is protected -- i.e a starters quota like we saw in the old NASL or in the Voyageurs Cup now.

Unfortunately, the idea of a starters’ quota has also been resisted from what CSN has been told. The reason is the same as why a Canadian roster spot requirement is resisted – fear of salary inflation. If, say, three Canadians are required to start every game then that puts a premium on Canadian roster spots as it’s likely that the club with the best Canadians is going to be at a competitive advantage.

    • Nice. I too try to fit in a long ride on the weekends at a few shorter ones during the week. I also have ridden to most events I've attended at the stadium and hopefully will do a few times this year, but it's not the nicest nor most intense riding. Make sure to check the wind forecast! If you've never ridden out that way, Hwy 26 (through St Francis Xavier) adds about 10km compared to the #1 but is much less stressful. Expected news, but still bad. Valour's midfield looks even smaller (stature-wise) now, and this is a problem in a league that permits a lot of physical play.
    • Liga MX is higher level than the Belgian League, If it were Erevidise then it would be similar level. Plus Cavallni is ripping it up and so is David! Great problem to have, Jonathan is much younger and has had a better NT start, but Lucas has that 8 seasons as pro
    • All the sound files from the post game press conference.  http://www.rocketrobinsoccerintoronto.com/reports19/19york099.htm   York 9 head coach Jimmy Brennan, then Ryan Telfer, then Blainville head coach Emmanuel Macagno with midfielder Wandrill Lefevre, then York 9's Luca Gasparotto.   I'm working on some stadium pictures and my game report which I'll just keep amending this post.

    • He can still keep it simple, break up plays, play 1 2s but i noticed people played balls in to space and his first step wasnt there.  On the flip side do we really need him to beat Martinique and Cuba? Why not create a lineup and shape with an eye on the future and playing on the front foot
    • bicycle, but just one way.  It's 85 km and I usually try to ride 60-80 km on a Saturday, or ride 30-40 km and run 10 km.  The Valour Saturday games over the last couple of weeks have gotten in the way of my Saturday workout, so I'm looking forward to combining Valour and my workout
    • I'm with you on the MAK at left back thing, but David hasn't done anything to suggest he's a defensive liability, which is how your comment came off to me. Thanks for clearing that up. I don't love that Kaye is projected as the starting LB, but it is what it is. I would rather he play in the midfield, but he is a better player than Adekugbe at that spot, so I get it. As for David, I don't see him switching to CAM at this point.
    • It runs me the wrong way when someone thinks David wont be starting.  He led a decent team in Belgium in scoring.  He scored 4 goals in 4 games for Canada.  He can play up top as a CAM or as a second striker.  He starts over Cavalinni if he has to play up top.
    • I agree, and I also like that we are in every game, and that we had a great chance to win last night.  Add to that having been screwed by a few reffing decisions, which Pro said had been wrong, and then plain bad luck, like the own-goal last night.
    • Technically we are not talking about a union. It is simply an association that defends players' interests. Hardly anywhere in the world do they have real power, the salary hierarchies, marketing rationales and player agents empty "unions" of effectivity.  Technically players should be a representational voting block for all our soccer association elections, including provincial and CSA. As with clubs, refs, etc.
