Vic
USA has announced their roster for the games on the 19th and 22nd. They have included 18yr old Christine Nairn (but not her teammate Sydney Leroux): http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_15073305.html USA staff now includes two videographers. Should be interesting to see who gets the call for Canada. The two Norwegians are on three month mid-season break from league matches, but the three Swedes have a Cup game on the 14th and a league match on the 26th. Vic
Nothing on their schedules so it doesn't look like CBC, Bold, TSN or Sportsnet is running the game, so unless something changes you'll have to find a bar with ESPN (and if you're lucky they can also pickup ESPN HD - it's on both). Game is this Sunday (the 19th) at: 4:30PM NDT (St. John's) 4:00PM ADT (Halifax, Saint John, Charlottetown) 3:00PM EST (Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec) 2:00PM CDT (Winnipeg) 1:00PM MDT/CST (Calgary, Edmonton, Regina) 12:00PM PDT (Vancouver)
Vic
Sundhage's comments in the U20 thread on the big difference between mature pros and youth players is quite interesting. The USA has a team of U18s who beat our U20s 5-1, and above them a team of U20s who beat ours 8-0 (as well as our full WNT in the Pan Am Games in 2007), and then above them an even stronger team of U23s, and from that team "maybe" one player will make their senior team. The 21-player USA roster for the upcoming senior friendlies is comprised of 18 dedicated full-time pros playing in the most elite Women's league in the world. We appear to be on an alternate plane regarding this as a good 9 or 10 on our roster are still in school, and excluding Kelly Parker of the six new players Morace has added post-Pellerud, five are 19 and one is 21. You cannot deny age brings wisdom and maturity. So the question is do we honestly have no good players in the country over the age of 19?

Is there anyone really looking for these players or are we still relying on a friend that knows somebody, that knows somebody plus the perennial political recommendations? Or worst yet, what do we have to offer to the good players to make it attractive?

Soccer9
Yes not bad. Just saw some replays and US had plenty of chances as usual. I believe the shot count was 21-3 in favour of the US. Quite a few substitutions made by Morace, several close to the end.

The Ref
I don't mean to be critical as I have high hopes on Morace and her staff. With a disadvantage of 21-3 shots on goal and 10-2 corners it will take a while until Sinclair gets her 100th goal. Look forward to watching Wednesday's game and seeing some of the newer players. Trillium
Hoping Corky Julien gets to play and put the ball in the net, would be nice to see her get a second goal in her second cap .. and be on her way to pushing out some of the veterans.
redhat
I know it's the USA, but with only 3 shots on net it seems Canada was there to defend, and not win it. Sorry to sound harsh.

Vic
The venue: quote: Blackbaud Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium located on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina, that opened in 1999. Charleston Battery call Blackbaud Stadium home. Its nickname is Battery Park. Blackbaud Stadium seats 5,100 people, mostly in two large stands on either side of the field. The stadium is modeled on smaller, lower-division English soccer stadiums. It features an on-site pub, called "The Three Lions". In early 2008 the Battery announced a plan to convert much of the stadium to solar energy. The panels are said to offset as much as 12 tons of carbon dioxide per annum. Additionally, the complex includes sky boxes, a plaza for corporate entertaining, and state-of-the-art media capabilities, making it one of the premier professional soccer venues in the U.S. and a prototype for all future soccer-specific stadiums yet to come. We need a dozen of these in Canada right away.
The Ref
Let us become registered as a Society, pulled our resources and build our own The Voyageurs Stadium. Of course with a Pub to help offset operating costs. Real grass all the way! And we manage where do foreigner supporters sit.
Vic
The funny thing is if the pitch is quality it would be the players choice. Great post on the men's side of the board today: quote:In describing Manchester United's dominaton of the 2008-2009 EPL - Alan Hansen stated that: "For United it's not about playing the long ball or the short ball - it's about playing the right ball and this is what makes them so dangerous." Even as a Liverpool supporter, I felt that was a very true statement. The best teams don't box themselves into a system that is derived out of the need to be attractive. (See the Arsenal we'll-pass-it-into-the-goal mentality for example) T-7 hours.

Vic
Tonight's Jays game is a TSN crew, so hopefully that means it's a go on Sportsnet. quote:The Canadian Soccer Association announced today that Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast the upcoming 22 July match between Canada and USA's women's national teams. The match, which will be the 47th encounter between the two sides, will be broadcast live from Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC. The match will be carried on all four Sportsnet channels (20.00 ET / 17.00 PT). “We are once again pleased to be providing Canadian fans coast to coast with the opportunity to watch world class international soccer on Sportsnet,” said Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary Peter Montopoli. Vic
Any night with an international game on coast-to-coast is golden. USA lineup update. Chalupny (the pitbull) has gone home for a funeral which really unsettles their back line with their captain and defensive rock Rampone already out after emergency abdominal surgery last week. The Americans were going to go deeper in their roster anyway and give starting positions and time to their bench (Tarpley, Osborne, Lloyd, Cox, the 18yr old Nairn and Solo if she's 100%). But now it should be interesting to see what Sundhage comes up with to try and jerry-rig their defense. T-5 hours.
The Ref
I would assume that Sundhage's bench is better quality than Morace's bench judging from some comments about our subs in last game. I hope it is not going to be another bunker style again. T-
