bettermirror
It was recently proposed at the UEFA Youth Conference in Cyprus that the, and I quote, "The reduction of the maximum age for changes of nationality (go) from 21 to 19" (UEFA Magazine, January 2006). This is particularly applicable to nations such as Canada, duh.
JamesW
So this means Jonathan de Guzmán only has one year too change nationality? And this also means Marcel De Jong now has to play with Canada, right?
jonovision
Well, it sounds like it is only a proposal and hasn't been put into effect yet. If it was, then I think de Jong would be effectively locked-in with Canada, but Jonathan de Guzman, who hasn't yet played for any country, would essentially be a free agent as he is right now. bettermirror
correct - simply a proposal in january. certainly must go through the typical red-tape before being agreed upon. Cross our fingers it comes into affect.
sKriSh
This is great news for countries like Canada. I hope this does go through.
Richard
Question... since this is a UEFA proposal, if implemented how would it affect Canada since Canada is not a member of UEFA. Also, do FIFA rules not trump UEFA rules in this regard?
Aljarov
Good point Richard, but as most Canadians is question usually have some sort of tie to Europe that would seem to address the larger part of the problem. Not too many young Cancuks running off to player for Brazil!!
Daniel
I don't know if UEFA can implement such a rule on its own.
bettermirror
nothing happens if nothing is proposed. if uefa decides unanimously on such a proposal, they have such clout i'm sure fifa would follow with the logic - while they may not recognize people like Adam Street leaving Canada, they certainly recognize the controversy the Dutch went through with the Kalou's or whoever it was! BringBackTheBlizzard
quote:Originally posted by Daniel I don't know if UEFA can implement such a rule on its own. I suspect they probably can but only for European Championships which are under their direct jurisdiction.
An Observer
I would imagine if UEFA approves, it will only be a recommendation to be considered by FIFA. Also, I would suspect that most of the players such as De Jong would be grandfathered and it would only apply to those that are younger than 19 now. Also, it would not effect De Guzman as he has not played for Canada so he is committed to no one right now.
