sstackho
Thanks for that. It looks like that is 10pm EDT, as there is no daylight savings time in Costa Rica. So looks like only a half-hour of overlap for one match. Not too shabby. Have fun at the game! Are you considering going to Guatemala at all any more? beachesl
Mexico-St Kitts World Cup qualifier postponed August 16, 2004 BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (AP) -- Mexico's World Cup qualifier at St. Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday was postponed until Nov. 13. The change was made because the Mexicans are participating in the Olympic soccer tournament, Peter Jenkins, president of the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association, said Monday. Costa Rica, also is the Olympic tournament, remains scheduled to host Honduras on Wednesday on the opening day of the semifinal round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The Olympic men's tournament is primarily limited to players under 23. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Talk about last minute! sstackho
So what are hoping for in the other game in our group? You could have angrument for all of the three outcomes. Myself, I think I want a draw, so the one point vanishes, never to be seen again. But if Mexico could get their match delayed, you'd have to think CR should as well. beachesl
Draws for the six other matches in our Group, definitely, as it means TWO lost points for each team involved. They can cancel each other out so we need fewer wins to advance. Costa Rica only has a few players in Europe, but thats' more than Honduras, so moving their match to a non-International date would hurt them more. Plus they played together intensively in the Copa America and their Olympic team contains few players they would want in the WCQ's.

sstackho
ON SOCCER // Cup qualifying gets serious Luis Bueno THE PRESS-ENTERPRISE 824 words 14 August 2004 The Press-Enterprise E11 English Copyright © 2004 Bell & Howell Information and Learning Company. All rights reserved. In June, CONCACAF whet our qualifying appetites by staging a bunch of one-sided home-and-home series. While somewhat entertaining, those matches mostly lacked the tension of true qualifying, where one goal could mean the difference between the World Cup or embarrassment. On Wednesday, qualifying picks up again, and this time it is for real. United States-Jamaica kicks off the second round of qualifying (Costa Rica and Mexico won't play until next month because of the Olympics). Three four-team groups make up this stage. Only the top two from each group will advance to next year's final hexagonal. Here's a look at each group. Group A: El Salvador, Jamaica, Panama, United States. Favorite: U.S. In CONCACAF, only the United States has reached the past four World Cups. Part of the reason is the United States takes care of business in the early rounds. One-sided results aren't exactly the Americans' calling card, but the U.S. always finds a way in CONCACAF. Coach Bruce Arena has done well to develop depth at all positions, and it should come in handy this round. Surging: Panama. Sure, it was only against St. Lucia, but Panama cruised in its earlier round, destroying the Caribbean nation by a 7-0 aggregate. Declining: El Salvador. For a nation with as much passion about soccer, the El Salvador squad hasn't done much in qualifying. It seems the only thing going for El Salvador is a favorable home-field edge, but that alone is difficult to parlay into a trip to the final round of qualifying. Key Player: Damani Ralph. Quickly becoming one of the best strikers in MLS, Ralph gives Jamaica one of the better strikers in this group. If Ralph plays for the Reggae Boyz like he does for Chicago, Jamaica stands a good shot of getting past this round. Group B: Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras Favorite: Honduras. In this position mostly because of Costa Rica's struggles, Honduras nonetheless will pose a difficult challenge for any other side. Midfield standout Amado Guevara is blossoming into a superstar with the MetroStars, and others such as Carlos Pavon and David Suazo provide quality support. Surging: Canada. Want a surprise? How about Canada? Granted, it was against Belize, but Canada obliterated the Central Americans on an 8-0 aggregate to get here. Declining: Costa Rica. After needing away goals to beat Cuba, Costa Rica sacked coach Steve Sampson and replaced him with Jorge Luis Pinto, who has had marginal success coaching South American clubs. Costa Rica struggled in Copa America but did reach the quarterfinals, but that was as a third-place finisher. Third place here won't earn the Ticos anything. Key player: Carlos Ruiz, Guatemala. Much heralded for his MLS scoring antics, Ruiz needs to show he can fill the nets internationally as well. Costa Rica and Honduras like to attack and will leave their defense vulnerable for counterattacks. Enter Ruiz. If he's on, Guatemala should finish in the top two. Group C: Mexico, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago. Favorite: Mexico. The U.S. got stuck with three tough road matches. Costa Rica was drawn into the toughest group. Mexico got a Caribbean vacation. Don't expect 18-0 aggregate scores, like Mexico had against Dominica, but do expect five one-sided affairs. Only Mexico's match at Port-of-Spain should be difficult, as Trinidad & Tobago beat Mexico, 1-0, in this round at home four years ago. Surging: Trinidad & Tobago. Always, it seems, Trinidad & Tobago is about to turn the corner, yet somehow the Trinis seem to self-destruct. After Mexico, Trinidad seems a safe bet to reach the final stage. Declining: St. Vincent & the Grenadines. If nothing else, CONCACAF keeps you on your toes because every now and then you need to pull out your atlas to locate a member nation. Such is the case with St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Soccer diehards are vaguely familiar with this nation because former Galaxy defender Ezra Hendrickson hailed from here, but you'd be hard-pressed to name another native of this tiny Caribbean nation. One fringe MLS player is not enough to help get your country a step away from the World Cup. Key Player: Adolfo Bautista. Francisco Palencia is aging quickly; Cuauhtemoc Blanco can't get along with the coach. Daniel Osorno and Omar Bravo have never quite reached the next level. Mexico needs someone to step up and become Jared Borgetti's striking partner, and - El Bofo - Bautista would seem to be the logical choice. El Bofo's had success at his numerous stops in the Mexican league - Tecos, Morelia, Pachuca, Chivas - and he's been an up-and-comer since the 2002 Gold Cup. He needs to start producing.
