World-Video of U.S. match with El Salvador sent to FIFA

NEW YORK, Sept 6 (Reuters) - CONCACAF officials have sent a video of the United States-El Salvador World Cup qualifier to FIFA following Saturday's ill-tempered match between the two teams.

Trinidad and Tobago referee Neal Brizan had difficulty controlling the Group A tie won 2-0 by the U.S.

The physical game was marred by two sendings-off and several confrontations between the players after El Salvador goalkeeper Santos Rivera appeared to kick U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley in the face in the 58th minute.

"We have sent a match report and a (video) tape of the game to (world football's governing body) FIFA," CONCACAF spokesman Steve Torres told reporters on Monday.

Torres said the video was sent after the match report detailed the dismissals of El Salvador coach Juan Paredes and forward Denis Alas.

Alas was sent off in the 26th minute for a second bookable offence, wearing jewellery on the field. Paredes was ordered from the bench minutes later for protesting against the red card.

"It was a very odd game," said U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Jim Moorhouse.

"There were a lot of strange occurrences out there on the field and very little rhythm but in terms of CONCACAF sending a video tape to FIFA, we know nothing about that. That is completely up to them."

Boy, a lot of the US fans are up in arms now that the only way to see the October 9 match from El Salvador is through pay-per-view. This is because the home Associations own the broadcast rights for the WCQ's in their own countries, and the Saly FA has decided to make a killing.

We should at least be thankful that CSA/Sportsnet provides the coverage free, even if sometimes delayed. On the other hand, there is probably no market in Canada to have the MNT on pay-per-view.

October 13

I will leave it up to beachesl to update the standings at the top of the first page of this thread.

Group 1</u>

USA 6 Panama 0

Jamaica 0 El Salvador 0

USA are through to the Hex. Should be an interesting final day (USA vs. Jamaica, Panama vs. El Salvador) as all three other teams are still alive (Jamaica 6, Panama 5, El Salvador 4).

Group 2</u>

Canada 1 Costa Rica 3

Guatemala 1 Honduras 0

Guatemala are through to the Hex. Guatemala vs. Canada on the final day means nothing, but Honduras vs. Costa Rica is huge: winner advances, tie means Costa Rica advances.

Group 3</u>

Mexico 3 Trinidad & Tobago 0

St. Kitts & Nevis 0 St. Vincent & Grenadines 3

Mexico are through to the Hex and T&T aren't far behind in this silly group.

STANDINGS UPDATED (he says half-heartedly).

Jamaica is in trouble. Panama will not lose to the Sallies at home, and the Regge Boyz will therefore have to beat a surging US in a cool Columbus Ohio to advance.

Have to cheer for the Ticos, as they have a lot more class than the Hondurans (and the robbery by the refs in the Honduras games is galling).

St. Vincent still mathmatically alive, but they need to beat Trini by 5 goals in Trini to advance.

Post today from a Costa Rican poster on bigsoocer called titan, about the Honduras team:

"I heard today at the 12md sport news here in CR, that Raul Martinez Sambula [COACH OF HONDURAS], was fired today.

Jose de la Paz Herrera (Chelato Ucles) will eventually be designated as new coach.

It seems that they are now in panic and pressed the "Autodestruction Button".

Also the FENAFUTH [THE HONDURAN NATIONAL ASSOCIATION] wants to change the game to the horrible Morazan Stadium [ A SMALLLER BUT MORE INTIMIDATING STADIUM ALSO IN SAN PEDRO SUL WITH LESS THAN HALF THE SEATS, AS OPPOSED TO THE OLIMPICO METROPOLITANO WHERE CANADA PLAYED ON SATURDAY], but according to the Fifa rules, that has to be made 60 days before the game."

The Honduran Association has announced that FIFA have now authorized the switch to the Francisco Morazan Stadium, also in San Pedro Sula, for the Nov 17 match, Honduras v Costa Rica. This may not be the case, as there is a right of appeal from Costa Rica first.

Honduran fans claim that "Jose Luis Pinto [CR coach] is at this time bitting his nails off due to the proximity of the fans to the field.... (approx 15 feet)".

After the Honduras announcement, the Costa Rican Association apparently filed an appeal, based on the lateness of the change, security reasons and the condition of the field (they apparently have pictures of a recent league match there showing the field in awful condition).

A real p*ssing match going on here, and a lot of nervousness on both sides. Honduras has to win, Costa Rica needs a tie or a win (if Honduras wins they are even in points, but Honduras advances by better head to head, which is the tiebreaker for this WCQ rather than group goal difference). The survivor should make it to Germany.

Too bad CSA doesn't have the stomach for p*ssing matches.

An interesting Honduran article in Spanish:

http://www.aguima.com/noticias/noticia.cfm?noticiaId=3674

It outlines that an Honduran Association official from the capital Tegulcigalpa went to San Pedro Sula to meet with the fan clubs of the four local clubs to plan how to organize stadium demonstrations to intimidate the Costa Rican players and support their own players for the big match on November 17.

The discussion involved various ways that the Ticos and the refs could be intimidated, and they arranged what songs and chants would be more effective for chanting (it was suggested that well known local bawdy folk songs be chosen so all the fans could join in easily, as opposed to the National Anthem which created a more dignified atmosphere which was to be avoided ). Passing out songsheets was seen as detrimental, as full attention must be given to the effective delivery of short direct songs and chants.

It was suggested that Honduran fans are quieter than most in the world, and that if fans are not prepared to be energetic, they agreed with a national magazine that they should not come to the smaller Morazon stadium and take up space.

One of the fan club leaders advised that only large drums be taken, because small drums just make people want to dance, and they then are not intimadating enough.

The other plan was to have the Association deliver water to the more vociferous fan groups directly, so they don't get distracted by going to get water at the back sides of the stands and won't lose energy through dehydration .

One of the fan club leaders told the Association guy that they needed their players to get more motivated and agressive on the field so that the fans are motivated to get agressive themselves.

The inference was that the Honduran players were unusually flat during the matches aginst Canada and Guatemala.
