fieldturf ...... again

i know that we belabour this point a bit too much, but did anyone see the on field interview with kevan pipe last week during the women's semi final match? they were discussing the new stadium in toronto. he called it a soccer specific stadium and that although we would all love it to be grass, the multi functional nature of the facility, would dictate the use of artificial turf. a bit of a contradiction dont you think? does the csa have its head in the sand and they are really that stupid? or do they simply have no clout and are trying to convince themselves and the world that it is really an acceptable option.

this stadium is great news for the cfl and the argos, but with fieldturf, the announcement for soccer in canada is really a non issue. what will this stadium add to soccer in canada if there are already three stadia of similar size within a few hundred kilometers of this new one? montreal, ottawa and hamilton are all fifa approved are they not? what could the csa do in a fieldturf toronto stadium that it cant already do in these other cities? holding the wcq in kingston is proof that fieldturf has not been accepted by the world community yet, or why would these matches not be held in these otherwise superior venues? its so obvious its painful. having a fourth stadium that offers no more advantage than the ones that are already in place nearby, will do nothing more for the national team. there can be no argument, or the men's team would be playing in frank clair or molson stadium right now. it is dillusional to believe that because it will be in toronto, other countries will suddenly agree to play on this stuff.

plastic grass in our supposed 'national soccer stadium' will also look bush...it will be an embrassment. surely the csa realizes this as well...how could they not? it must be out of their control and are simply puting the best face on it that they can.

Take it with a grain of salt but recently on the fox sports world report they were talking about the new stadium and while they did say it wasn't going to be natural grass they did indicate that the plan was to follow the examples of other fifa-approved non-natural grass stadiums. What a good example of these would be, I don't know.

If the Liberals lose the election, this may be academic, as there is a very good chance this project won't fly under a Conservative minority government.

I don't think so. One of the advantages of having this project tied to a successfull bid for the U20 event, is that it reduces the risk of having the funding pulled from it. Afterall, what is the supposed new gov't supposed to say if Canada wins the bid? No we we fund this project? Then why not do the same for the funds that have been promised for other international event such as the Winter olympics in 2010.
