Canucks in Germany Preview

This weekend sees the Bundesliga leagues back in action, still another week for the Regional League to kick off.

On Saturday, Paul Stalteri will hopefully be back in action as he comes off his suspension for accumulation of cautions. Werder Bremen, well ahead of 2nd place Bayern Munich by 9 pts., travel to Gelsenkirchen to take on Schalke 04. As there is only one more week before 'Karnival' ends, it looks like Ailton may actually be productive down the stretch. Stalteri is listed as starting according to kicker. Werder Bremen had an easy 4-1 victory in the first meeting back in August.

Also on Saturday, Julian de Guzman and Hannover 96 travel east to face Hansa Rostock. Julian is expected to start as a defensive midfielder for Hannover. A victory would move Hannover well away from relegation and within shouting distance of a spot in Europe. The opening round game between the two in Hannover ended in a 3-3 draw.

In the Bundesliga 2, Tam Nsaliwa and Jahn Regensburg are getting desperate for points as they have their longest trip of the season going north to face VfB Luebeck. The northern club sits in 6th place overall while Tam's team is in danger of dropping into relegation territory.

This weekend also sees the restart of the Junioren Bundesliga. Saturday sees Jeremy Shepherd and the Hertha BSC Berlin U19s in action hosting Hamburger SV in the North/Northeast division. In the South/Southwest division, Dylan Hughes and 1.FC Kaiserslautern host Eintracht Frankfurt and 1860 Munich host KSV Baunatal, although Nik Ledgerwood is out of action indefinitely with an injury.

Clarification

The two U19 games in the South/Southwest division are on Sunday. Also, Nik Ledgerwood had moved up to the amateur/reserves side but of course it's a moot point with his injury.

It appears David Edgar has returned from injury as he played 90 min in Newcastle's

U-19 game against Sunderland on Feb 20 according to Newcastle United's website.

At 16, it also appears from the what I have read on some NUFC fansites, Edgar is the youngest member of U-19 squad. Could he be a key central defender for our National team in the future?

Dunfield has scored for Bury -- now 1-1 with Oxford. Dunfield scored in the 47th and Oxford came right back in the 49th. Go Terry!

Dunfield's also been taking their corners and free kicks, and had a couple of crosses and shots before the goal.

Allez les Rouges,

In yet another 1-1 draw, Hume plays the full match for Tranmere. Plymouth won 2-1 over Port Vale but Bent wasn't dressed so I guess they determined that he wasn't fully fit yet. Bircham played the ful match for QPR in, you guessed it, a 1-1 draw (which is also what Dunfield's Bury-Oxford match ended up as).

In Scotland, apart from the McKenna goal...

Fenwick did not dress for Hibs who lost 3-0 to Rangers.

Dodds did not dress for Kilmarnock who lost 1-0 to Motherwell.

Div 1, Xausa started on the bench, not sure if he played, as Falkirk beat Brechin City 5-0-

Morton could only draw 3-3 away to Alloa with Bottiglieri starting as usual. They are losing their comfortable lead in Div 2, only 5 points up with a game in hand now.

In Belgium Michael Klukowski played 90 and took a m. 76 yellow as La Louvière lost 2-1 to Mouscron. They remain mid low table, still well clear of relegation doubts.

Paok Salonika drew in an away game today, Thunder I don't think played. He has informed me that he has played a couple of friendlies, with 1st team and 2nd, and that he has done well. They seem to like him at Paok and he is enjoying the club and the atmosphere overall.

Just a note on the Morton game, a direct red at the 9 minute mark had Morton playing with 10 men for virtually the whole game. Even so, it took a last minute penalty for Alloa to gain the draw.

Speaking of Terry Dunfield, the Bury followers and media are showing him lots of love. Just click on match action and then move down to the bottom to the Oxford United game and click; uncovers piles of pictures of Terry.

They call him man of the match by a country mile. Also a picture of Joan Collins (why she's at a Bury-Oxford game?)

Dundee United not Dundee

And apparently Big Kev's air attack was giving Dundee United no end of worry. Geez, I love those sort of reports.

McKenna playing out of the back again it looks like, which I also like to see reported, as Hearts for all their off field politics continue to lock up 3rd in the SPL and a EUFA Cup spot.

With Levein looking to shed nearly a million pounds from the player budget, Big Kev's versatility (as harmful to his career as it sometimes seems) may save his skin at Tynecastle. Or Murrayfield. Or wherever.

Simon Rayner played last midweek (17th) in a loss to league leaders TNS, 2-0. Reports say Port Talbot did well though. They played Cwmbran today in league play, no report yet. There is a photo of Simon on the PT web, link and report is here: http://thetownteam.bravepages.com/1sttns170204/

Port Talbot lost at home 2-3 yesterday to Cwmbran, making it tough for them to make the final 8 in Wales, spots which give them the right to play the Premier Cup. Simon Rayner played 90.

Some less than encouraging info on McKenna's defending in this match:

"But United levelled on 53 minutes when Jim McIntyre found the net with a powerful low shot after shrugging off Kevin McKenna's tame challenge."
