Canadians in Italy - February 22

Serie C1: Crotone 2 Teramo (Rocco Placentino) 0

- Placentino made his debut for Teramo as he was subbed in at the 31st minute with the score 1-0. He and two others received the highest rating (6.5/10, but note that no one ever really gets outside the 4-8 range under the Italian rating system) amongst Teramo players on the report posted on Teramo's site.

Serie D: Noicattaro 2 Isola Liri (David Masciantonio) 1

- Masciantonio played the whole match. Isola Liri have been really slipping lately, as they were challenging for the one promotion spot at the top of the table a month ago but have now lost four in a row and have fallen 7 points back.

Promozione Puglia (7th division): Cerignola 1 Lucera (Franco Lalli) 3

- I don't know how much he played but Lalli scored a "doppietta" (2 goals). He now has 8 goals in the 15 league matches for which I have info.

Not a great weekend for our pros in Germany.

Paul Stalteri and Werder Bremen stay atop the Bundesliga 1 with a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen vs FC Schalke 04. With Bayern Munich winning

Werder Bremen still have a 7 point lead in the top flight.

Julian de Guzman and Hannover 96 were drubbed 3-1 at Hansa Rostock on Saturday. They have dropped to 12th place and will be worrying if they do not start putting up some points.

Tam Nsaliwa was among the victims for the bad 5-0 home defeat by Jahn Regensburg last weekend. He was benched today as Jahn Regensburg surprisingly beat VfB Luebeck 3-0 today in Luebeck. This is a big win for Regensburg as they now put a couple of clubs between themselves and relegation.

Jeremy Shepherd came on in the 57th minute yesterday as Hertha Berlin U19s defeated Hamburger SV 3-1 in the North/Northeast division of the Junioren Bundesliga.

Dylan Hughes goes 90 minutes as a striker for 1.FC Kaiserslautern's U19s today as they are beaten 3-1 at home by Eintracht Frankfurt in the South/Southwest division of the Junioren Bundesliga.

Rapid (currently third place) tied Bregenz (who are mid-table) 1-1 yesterday. All these comments are regarding Ante Jazic at Rapid Wien:

Yesterday he did very well in the offense, had some good assists (after a Jazic cross our new striker Axel Lawaree hit the post) in the first half of the game.

On the left back side he did, as usual, a secure and good defensive game. His opponent never had a chance.

But in the second half he disappeared a little, didn't head to the offensive, which was a little scary, because in the second half he had a nice partner on the left side with Sebastian Martinez, who played a nice game...

Next game: Saturday in the afternoon at our beloved Hanappi Stadion, or as we call it "St.Hanappi", against FC Kärnten, who is last in the league table at the moment.

Hi Canadafan!

You are right. Ante was not as cautious as he usually is. He played a rather offensive role against Bregenz and had some good crosses (i dont know if it is the correct term-i mean that he played the ball high towards the opponent team's goal coming from the left wing ). He certainly was one of our best players yesterday which you also can see in the thread "wer war bester Spieler gegen Bregenz".

See you

Frosch

Yes, had some good crosses

Here's the voting for the best Rapid player against Bregenz.

I watched some extended highlights of the Jahn Regensburg match while in Italy last night in my hotel room. The player that replaced Nsaliwa on the right side of midfield scored their third goal. But generally, I thought he was pretty awful defending and probably long term wouldn't keep Nsaliwa out of the side on that performance (and of course, Nsaliwa can play other positions). I think the scoreline really flattered Jahn Regensburg as well.

FErnando Aguiar started in Benfica's away loss to Maritimo, 3-2. Not sure if he played the whole match, think he did though. Looks like they'll have probs to catch Sporting for 2nd spot but should be able to hold down third. Fernando got a 4 rating from ABola, better than the keeper and defenders but worse than the strikers. Wasn't a good game for the team.

Coming up next is the UEFA Cup first leg at home vs. Rosenborg, on Thursday eve.

Benfica drew Belenenses, think it is at home, in the one match semi-final of the Portugal Cup, to be played mid March (17th I think). An accessible draw and they should be in the final.

Seems that Yallop has him in mind for the nats, so I guess that means that he should be going to the camp late March.

In Portugal 2nd division Kevin de Serpa did not get off the bench for Penafiel, who won away 2-3 at Felgueiros. They remain one point off promotion, in fourth spot. Still good to see him on the bench after not dressing last week, since he's offensive mid and the team went up 0-3 I guess they did not need him. Leggat, who was reported to have signed for them too (or maybe he didn't in the end?) has not appeared in any game report.

Daniel Imhof played 90 as St. Gallen fell at home to Young Boys 1-3. They had a shot at tying but ended up playing the last 15 min a man down.

The team is 8th, tied with the 6th to 9th place teams in a 10 club league. Only hope for the year is to just stay out of relegation (last place) or the playoff (9th).

Godfrey scores again for Watford Reserves to help take them into a cup final, with only a few weeks left on his contract.

From here:

HERTS SENIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL: HITCHIN TOWN 1 WATFORD RES 3

WatfordFC.co.uk

NIGEL GIBBS' Reserves eased into the Watford Cleaning Supplies-sponsored Herts Senior Cup final with a comfortable 3-1 semi-final victory at Hitchin Town of the Ryman League Premier Division.

The Golden Boys will face Boreham Wood (date TBC) who beat Barnet in the other last-four tie after French Academy striker Gauthier Diafutua scored two and supplied the other as part of an impressive and, ultimately, efficient team display.

The Canaries rarely bothered Richard Lee in the Watford goal although Nathan Boothe had to come to the rescue when he misjudged an early Town flag kick.

If Hitchin felt they had the potential to threaten, they didn't get the chance to impose themselves on an impressive rear-guard display, outstanding in particular was Academy second-year scholar Cameron Mawer at right-back, looking comfortable in possession and defending intelligently and with determination.

For all Hitchin's hopes, Watford were soon on the offensive, scoring mid-way through the first half then wrapping the tie up with goals either side of a Hitchin consolation in a six-minute second-half goal feast.

When presented with his first sight of goal, Diafutua hit the keeper's legs with a free go from 12 yards after skipper Gary Fisken's through-pass and Canada Under-20 international Elliott Godfrey's closing down had unsettled the home side defence into providing the chance.

The lively Fisken was then inches wide on 19 minutes, chesting down Godfrey's cross before measuring a curling right-footer past keeper Richard Wilmot but just the wrong side of the far post.

Seven minutes later, Gibbsy's boys were in front when Rob Martin's low cross found Godfrey whose initial shot was blocked leaving Diafutua the task of tucking the loose ball under Wilmot for his first of the night.

Twice more before half-time, Watford could have extended their lead. Godfrey will know he should have done better when side-footing wide from Diafutua's intelligent cut-back, then Anthony McNamee nearly created a goal for himself with an intricate piece of magic but the left-winger shot just wide after brilliantly swivelling away from his man with his back to goal 15 yards out.

Watford, on top and in control, extended their advantage just short of the hour mark but should have had the game out of sight by the time Hitchin scored with an almost instant reply.

On 57 minutes, Fisken really lengthened his stride to beat the off-side trap as he chased down a Boothe long ball forward. The captain steadied himself as he cut inside but then probably chose the wrong option - a shot saved by Wilmot - with three unmarked colleagues screaming for a cross.

But no matter, inside a minute of that chance Godfrey's side-footed shot had enough power to beat Wilmot after Diafutua had read another Boothe channel ball before finding his strike partner who didn't need to break his stride to score.

Stand-in centre-half Dominic Blizzard - otherwise fully in command - then had a moment he'll want to forget. From a hopeful free-kick into the Watford box, the rangy Wycombe-born young pro' completely mis-kicked his clearance, the ball breaking kindly for Town striker Mark Bridge. Somehow, Lee miraculously saved at point-blank range but Town skipper Jon Bone made no mistake with the rebound and, for a fleeting couple of minutes, the hosts felt they again had a chance.

But all hopes of a come-back were extinguished two minutes later when Fisken's fizzing long-range drive was only parried by Wilmot and Diafutua beat Godfrey to the rebound to stab home his second and Watford's decisive third.

Former FA Trophy winner Darran Hay tried to reduce the arrears with 20 minutes left but shot narrowly wide of Lee's right-hand post after a cross had found its way across the Hornets' area.

Jim Duffy's free-kick which had Lee scrambling across his goal but only grazed the outside of an upright ended the goal-mouth action on a chill night at Hitchin's Top Field, but a successful one for Nigel's young troupe who now have a cup final to look forward to...minus the tailored suits and coach ride down Wembley Way, of course.

Teams

Watford: Lee; Collins, Boothe, Blizzard, Mawer; McNamee, Swonnell, Fisken ©, Martin (Gilligan 83); Godfrey Diafutua (Grant 86). Subs not used: Mariappa, Chapman, Diagouraga.

Hitchin Town (1-11): Richard Wilmot; Jon Bone ©, Jim Duffy, Mark Burke, Paul Covington (Andy Downham 45), Ian Scott (Wayne Mills 76), Glen Lamacraft, Kevin Darcy, Mark Bridge, Darran Hay (Dean McElroy 79), Ryan Nicholl. Subs not used: Graham Clark.

Kevin McKenna's 84th minute header gives Hearts a 3-2 road win vs Livingston today (Feb 24). McKenna started on the right side of the Hearts back three, played 90 and also set up the first Hearts score.

Hume and Dunfield also played 90. Tranmere lost 2-1 to Rushden & Diamonds while Bury got a last minute equalizer (1-1) vs Southend. Paul Pesch sat as Shef U scored late to knock off Crewe 1-0.

Just to update the Aguiar report, he was subbed in the loss by Alex in m. 64. Should be said that the team lost the game after he went out.

Looking forward to seeing Fernando in the 1st leg of the Rosenborg UEFA match tomorrow Thursday.

Dani Fernandes played a friendly match with PAOK, think it was yesterday but could have been earlier today. They won 1-0 with a few 1st team players and mostly 2nd team.

I see results from a friendly on a PAOK fansite, but it shows a different result, 2-1. Maybe Dani only referred to his half in his mail to me, or it was a different one. Not reading Greek does not help too much, I once studied it but that was 23 years ago. A kinda vague guy at times, sometimes I don't know if having a direct line helps with the details too much.

One web confirms he was signed until 2007, mentioning as well his salary: 12,000 Euros. Doesn't seem like much. They have three older keepers who are all ending contracts in June, and have signed two others along with Thunder. Seems like some of the younger ones are going to be phased in, hope Daniel is one of them.
