Here are her 2 goals today in UWCL 2nd round leg 1 qualifying action. Also picked up an assist in a 7-0 comb over Cypriot side Apollon Limassol. Group stage for Benfica beckons. red card
A banger in Champions League action. Maybe beats out Lacasse for Canada women goal of the year. Her 14th goal of the year and 5th in UWCL. A crucial 1-0 win for Benfica against Frankfurt since Barcelona likely has the top spot in the group locked down. 10.8k watching is largest crowd to watch a Portuguese women side. Lots of Benfica fans in Malmo, interesting. They are through to the quarter finals, with a game left in the group stage next week, home to Barça. The quarter finals are vs a first place team, home in Lisbon and away final leg, mid and late March. As they can't face Barcelona again, it'll be O Lyon, likely, Chelsea likely with Haecken having an outside chance to win their group; or PSG, with Bayern Munich and Ajax with an outside chance in their group. Canadians alive in Champions League: Buchanan and Lawrence for Chelsea, Alidou and Chandra Davidson for Benfica, Vanessa Giles for Lyon, Clarissa Larisey for Haecken if they can draw or win next week, Evelyn Viens for Roma if they can beat Ajax away next week and hope the other match goes their way. kobasew19 and Onelessstar
red card
Alidou 2x today. 7x in UWCL. 18x in 23/24 season. May have been offside on 1st goal. Benfica had already qualified for knockout stage and couldn't catch Barcelona for first. But came back twice before Barcelona got a stoppage time goal for a 4-4 result. red card
Alidou's fine control and finish – which earned Benfica a 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 3 that proved crucial to them reaching a first quarter-final ahead of the four-time champions – topped the poll ahead of Sam Kerr's hat-trick-completing lob for Chelsea against Paris FC on Matchday 2 and Asisat Oshoala's overhead kick for Barcelona on the opening night of the group stage. That goal made it 3-2 aggregate and Lyon didn't get their other three until fairly late, so Benfica did well vs a European powerhouse.
