Champions League Quarter Finals are set

Recommended Posts

So the Quarter Finals are set, to be played March 5-7(first leg) and March 12-14(second leg):

Xelaju vs. Monterrey

Houston vs. Santos Laguna

UANL vs. Seattle

Herediano vs. Los Angeles

For the second year in a row, only four nations are represented in the Quarter Finals. In last years UEFA Champions League, seven nations were represented in the Quarter-Finals.

What can CONCACAF do to alleviate this problem? Wait a minute... does CONCACAF even want to fix this?

Why should they do anything to fix it?

How is it their problem if El Salvador has a weak league, or Canada only has 4 pro teams?

This is not entirely true. They could set it up so that the Mexican and US teams meet eachother in the group stage. I understand not letting teams from the same country meet in the group stage, this is advantageous that the US teams don't have to meet a Mexican opponent at this stage. But hey, concacaf want to keep them separated for as long as possible. Right now, everyone wants in a group with a US team, because the drop in talent in substantial from a Mexican side.

Just my 2 cents

UEFA made changes to the qualifying format for the Champions League that allowed smaller league champions to avoid the third/fourth place teams from the big leagues. This gave more opportunity to smaller clubs (APOEL is a great example) in the group stages. Mexico and USA will bring the money in the short term, but in the long term this will do nothing to help the growth of the competition.

Seattle makes MLS history by knocking out a Mexican club after a 3 goal 2nd half, and a late first half red to Tigres. Houston got demolished 3-0 bowing out to Santos Laguna.

Galaxy have a good chance tonight to move into semi's with win over Herediano.

EDIT: Galaxy win 4-1 and move on to the semis with fellow MLS side Seattle and Mexican clubs Monterrey and Santos Laguna.

First time since 2008's Champions Cup has 2 MLS sides (DCU and Houston) made the Semi's
