Canucks in Germany - April 2011 Edition

No McKenna concerns me as it's entirely possible we could, within a couple of months, be fielding a back line where three out of the four players don't play much if any club football (Take your pick - McKenna, Klukowski, Peters, Straith, Edgar, Stalteri)

A full 90 in a loss for Julien Latendresse-Levesque in goal for Energie Cottbus reserves in the Regional League Nord.

Just the 1st half for Massih Wassey as his Fortuna Duesseldorf reserves lose in the Regional League West. Relegation looks likely.

And a last minute sub in appearance for Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault in a Preussen Muenster win, pretty much assuring them promotion from the Regional League West to the 3. Liga. I suspect JBB has been injured but will try to verify.

Can't find any reason for it, but Marcel de Jong is a scratch from the 18 man squad for today's FC Augsburg game.

Another win, another clean sheet for FC Augsburg. Their 1-0 away win today puts them into 2nd place with a 6 point lead over 3rd and only 4 games to go.

Not quite official but looking VERY good for promotion to the show.

Wehen Wiesbaden won today, 2-1. The translation doesn't make much sense but Ledgerwood appears to have went the 90.

They're now in 3rd in 3.Liga.

Nik L. and OO teams will battle for the third B3 spot which I think gives them a chance at promotion (playoff game against a B2 team?).

BTW, OO second goal today was scored from the PK spot.

Big win for Wiesbaden, Nik was active with some chances as they stormed the opposition net looking for the winner. Indeed, they are now in the playoff position where they would play the 16th place team in B2 for promotion to B2.

Thanks. I looked at both clubs 4 remaining games and they have both a tough schedules. Should be interesting and let's hope one of them will be playing in that playoff game!

BTW, Nik L. received a 3 from Kicker.de while OO was named Player of the week and made the Team of the week for the 7th time this season.

Adam Straith stays on the bench as Energie Cottbus get a 2-1 win on Thursday vs Erzebirge Aue, closing the gap between the clubs to 1 point. Cottbus in 6th, on 51 pts, Aue 5th on 52, Greuther Fuerth on 54 pts in 4th and Bochum on 56 pts in 3rd place. So an outside chance that Cottbus could catch Bochum with 3 games left in the season, which would put them in the promotion playoff position.

Tough losses today for both SV Wehen Wiesbaden and Kickers Offenbach, putting their promotion hopes in jeopardy. Wiesbaden drop a 1-0 decision at home to Rot Weiss Erfurt and Erfurt vault over them into that 3rd spot in the table, the promotion playoff position. Nik Ledgerwood 90 minutes in midfield for Wiesbaden. Olivier Occean is inexplicably left on the bench as Kickers Offenbach lose 2-1 away to Eintracht Braunschweig. The 3. Liga has a 38 game schedule so 3 games left for all clubs.

Hansa Rostock clinched promotion in the 3. Liga this morning.

^ Yep. McKenna was not on the bench for that. Hertha Berlin try to clinch promotion today as they are away to MSV Duisburg, 0-0 minutes in, Friend on the bench.

Latendresse-Levesque in goal for Energie Cottbus reserves in a big 6-1 win over FC Oberneuland on Saturday in the Regional League North.

No sign of Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault in Thursday's 3-0 win for Preussen Muenster in the Regional League West.

Also no sign of Massih Wassey in Thursday's 2-1 loss by Fortuna Duesseldorf reserves also in the RL West.

Friend comes on for Lasogga with 12 minutes of time left, picks up his 3rd yellow of the season. Jubilation for Hertha as they clinch promotion with a 1-0 win.

As April winds down, some Canadians still in heated battles in Germany this weekend.

Friday

Bundesliga 1

No games with Canucks.

Bundesliga 2

Hertha Berlin (21W-6D-5L - 69 pts - 1st) host 1860 Muenchen (13W-10D-9L - 49 pts - 8th) with Rob Friend on the bench. Hertha clinched promotion last weekend.

3. Liga

Kickers Offenbach (16W-9D-10L - 57 pts - 6th) host Carl Zeiss Jena (10W-10D-15L - 40pts - 15th) with Olivier Occean leading the attack. Anything less than a win and kiss any chance of promotion goodbye.

Saturday

Bundesliga 1

FC Koeln (10W-5D-16L - 35 pts - 14th) have a very tough home match vs Bayer Leverkusen (19W-7D-5L - 64pts - 2nd). McKenna likely on the bench as Koeln have had a rough patch the last few games and are dropping back into dangerous territory with only a few games left.

3. Liga

Nik Ledgerwood expected to start for SV Wehen Wiesbaden (16W-10D-9L - 58 pts - 5th) are in tough away to 2nd place Hansa Rostock (22W-5D-8L-71 pts). Wiesbaden are just a point behind Dynamo Dresden who hold the 3rd place promotion playoff position. Kickers Offenbach a point back of Wiesbaden.

Sunday

Monday

Bundesliga 2

Energie Cottbus (15W-6D-10L- 51 pts - 6th) host FC Augsburg (18W-7D-6L- 61 pts - 2nd). No lineups as yet. A Cottbus win would put them closer to the playoff promotion spot; an Augsburg win would keep some points between themselves and Bochum, who are currently sitting in that playoff promotion spot.

Friend stays nailed to the bench and Lasogga scores yet again but Hertha drop a 2-1 decision to 1860. Lasogga picks up his 5th caution of the season so he misses next week.

A costly home loss for Kickers Offenbach, 2-0 to visiting Jena, despite 90 minutes from Olivier Occean up front.

Down early 2-0, Wiesbaden are reduced to 10 men and, despite scoring, go down 3-1 final to Hansa Rostock. Nik Ledgerwood subbed out of midfield with 10 minutes left. Dresden sit in the playoff promotion spot.

Kevin McKenna on the bench as Koeln are holding on with Bayer Leverkusen, 0-0 at the midpoint of the 2nd half.

Getting late in the game, 2 huge goals from Novokovic look to keep Koeln out of relegation with 2 games left in the season. Playing in front of 50,000 at home.

Also of note, major housecleaning at Offenbach today after their loss yesterday basically killed their promotion hopes. Coach fired, manager resigned, sporting director expected to resign tomorrow.

Adam Straith on the bench for Cottbus, Marcel de Jong starting left back for Augsburg, as Cottbus and FC Augsburg are tied 1-1 in the 2nd half, 30 minutes remaining.

No further scoring, with de Jong going 90 minutes. Augsburg put their promotion celebration on hold with 2 games to go.
