Preview of games involving Canucks this coming weekend:

Friday

Bundesliga 2

Marcel de Jong and FC Augsburg (16W-6D-5L- 54 pts - 2nd) look to keep pace with Hertha Berlin as they take on bottom feeder Arminia Bielefeld (3W-5D-19L - 14 pts - 18th) away from home. Expect Marcel de Jong to start at left back.

Adam Straith and Energie Cottbus (13W-6D-8L - 45 pts - 6th) host FC Ingolstadt (7W-6D-14L - 27 pts -14th), Adam likely on the bench.

3. Liga

Olivier Occean will start as the lone striker as Kickers Offenbach (14W-7D-8L - 49 pts - 3rd) are away to Werder Bremen reserves (6W-9D-14L - 27 pts - 19th).

Saturday

Bundesliga 2

Rob Friend and Hertha Berlin (W-D-L- pts - 1st) look to stay on top of the table as they host SC Paderborn (8W-7D-12L - 31pts - 13th). Rob Friend likely on the bench as Lasogga penciled in to start.

3. Liga

Nik Ledgerwood back in familiar surroundings this weekend as his SV Wehen Wiesbaden (13W-8D-8L - 47 pts - 6th) travel south to take on Bayern Munich reserves (W-D-L - pts - th). Nik expected to start as a holding midfielder. A win will keep them in the promotion hunt (only 2 pts back of Kickers Offenbach in the promotion playoff spot - 1st two spots look to be unreachable).

Sunday

Bundesliga 1

Kevin McKenna finally back with the squad but likely on the bench as FC Koeln (9W-5D-13L - 32 pts - 11th) host FC Nuernberg (12W-6D-9L - 42 pts - 6th). Despite their much improved form in the 2nd half, Koeln are far from safe, with only a 4 point lead over the promotion relegation spot.

Marcel de Jong starts for FC Augsburg. Adam Straith not picked for the 18 man roster for Cottbus. Both games underway.

Augsburg cruise to a 2-0 win, de Jong going 90 minutes at left back.

Cottbus lose 2-1.

Occean in action with Kickers Offenbach as they are scoreless at the half with Werder Bremen reserves.

Door is left open for Nik Ledgerwood's SVWW (and a couple of other teams) to pass Offenbach and take the playoff promotion spot as the Kickers can only manage a scoreless draw, Occean subbed off with 10 minutes on the clock.

Big win for Nik Ledgerwood and SV Wehen Wiesbaden today, 3-0 over Bayern reserves. Nik goes 90 minutes at right back.

My mistake on the Hertha Berlin game; it goes tomorrow.

In your preview you suggested Nik would likely start as holding midfielder, but he played as right back. Which position has be played more regularly this season?

I saw a projected lineup with him as a holding m/f but he has transitioned primarily to right back in the 2nd half of the season after playing several positions earlier.

Neither see action but big wins today for McKenna and Koeln (late 1-0 win keeping pushing them closer to mid-table) and Friend and Hertha Berlin (2-0 in front of 70,000 spectators in Berlin to pretty much ensure promotion).

Although neither are playing, Germany has done well for Canada this year in the sense that it's likely that we'll have 4 Canadians on 1.Bundesliga sides next year, and Ledgerwood has a real good shot of being in the 2.Bundesliga.

^ Don't see where you are getting FOUR Cdns in the Bundesliga 1. Staleri will not be playing B1 next season.

Some mid-week action from Germany in the 3. Liga:

Olivier Occean starts but is subbed off in the 62nd minute as Kickers Offenbach eke out a 1-0 win over visitors SpVgg Unterhaching to hold onto the 3rd (playoff) promotion spot.

Nik Ledgerwood with 90 minutes again at right back as his SV Wehen Wiesbaden earn an important 3-3 draw away to VfB Stuttgart reserves, keeping them within a win of that same 3rd promotion spot.

I wasn't sure when Stalteri's contract expired, so I left it at 4. Will be 3 I guess.

Hey Ed - what are your thoughts on McKenna getting any minutes as the season winds down? Curious because they've obviously done quite well while he's been MIA and would guess they might be reluctant to mix things up. Also - do you know his contract status? I seem to recall 2010 jan window there were rumours of him leaving but never materialized into anything. Will he be on next season? Thanks - as always the update are greatly appreciated.

^ I'll get back to you on that. *****in' time at work these past few weeks.

Friday

Bundesliga 2

Marcel de Jong started at left back but was pulled for an attacker 62 minutes in. To no avail, Kickers Offenbach held to a 0-0 draw at home with SpVgg Greuther Fuerth. Offenbach (17W-7D-5L - 58 pts - 2nd). They remain a point off the top of the table but Hertha (on top by 1 pt) and Bochum (3 pts back) have a game in hand.

Saturday

Bundesliga 2

Energie Cottbus (13W-6D-9L - 45 pts - 7th) are away to 1860 Muenchen. Don't expect Adam Straith to start.

3. Liga

Both Nik Ledgerwood and Olivier Occean expected to start for SV Wehen Wiesbaden and Kickers Offenbach respectively. The Wiesbaden side need a win to keep pace with Offenbach, who hold the playoff promotion spot, 2 pts ahead of Wiesbaden.

Sunday

Bundesliga 1

Kevin McKenna expected to be on the bench as FC Koeln, safely mid-table, have a derby away to soon to be relegated Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Monday

Bundesliga 2

Hertha Berlin, leading the 2nd Bundesliga, are in action; no lineups as yet.

He has another year on his contract. He's pretty much settled in as a veteran defender who could be useful to either Koeln or another club so the ball is in his court as to whether he makes a move.

Don't you mean Augsburg...not Offenbach?

Ed, do you have any sense if Lucien Favre will get sacked if BMG get relegated? Or does he have a mandate to rebuild in B2? Interesting, because he seems to have pretty close ties to Tom Soehn and I think he'd be a fantastic MLS manager. Love TT, but sometimes you need to consider other options.

He has a contract until 2013 that is also valid for the 2nd BL. He will not be sacked because he just took over the team, if they get relegated it will be blamed on Michael Frontzeck. Are you guys looking to become team Switzerland?

...and what's Friend's outlook for next year with Hertha promoting? Will he be sold to another B2 team, do you think, or just sit and play sparingly (if at all) for last two years of his contract? Is there potential for another Stalteri stalemate on the horizon?

I don't really give a r*t's rear what BMG are doing these days so I have no opinion on the matter.

Friend on the bench as the Hertha - Bochum game kicked off about 10 minutes ago.

Token last minute appearance from Friend as Hertha expand their lead atop the Bundesliga 2 with a 2-0 victory.

Weekend preview:

Friday

No games involving Canucks

Saturday

Bundesliga 1

Kevin McKenna likely on the bench as FC Koeln (10W-5D-14L - 35 pts - 11th) host VfB Stuttgart (8W-6D-15L - 30 pts - 15th).

Bundesliga 2

Hertha Berlin (19W-5D-5L - 62 pts - 1st) host VfL Osnabruecken (7W-6D-16L - 27 pts - 16th). Rob Friend likely on the bench. Lasogga is sitting on 4 yellows so perhaps Rob will get a chance in the next game or two.

Energie Cottbus (13W-6D-10L - 45 pts - 7th) in a real 6 pointer against MSV Duisburg (13W-7D-9L - 46 pts - 6th). Expect Adam Straith on the bench.

3. Liga

SV Wehen Wiesbaden (14W-10D-8L - 52 pts - 5th) host Rot Weiss Ahlen (9W-9D-14L - 33 pts* - 18th) and should pick up the 3 points. Nik Ledgerwood likely to start at RB but I see kicker has him projected as starting in the midfield.

Kickers Offenbach (15W-8D-9L - 53 pts - 3rd) host Wacker Burghausen (9W-8D-15L - 35 pts - 16th), with Olivier Occean starting up front.

Those stats junkies will note that Rot Weiss Ahlen actually earned 36 points this season on the field but had 3 points deducted.

Sunday

No games involving Canucks.

Monday

Bundesliga 2

Marcel de Jong and FC Augsburg (17W-7D-5L - 58 pts - 2nd) are away to Karlsruher SC (7W-8D-14L - 29 pts - 15th), with de Jong likely at left back but no lineups available yet.

No sign of Kevin McKenna as FC Koeln lose 3-1 at home in the top flight.

Rob Friend gets over 20 minutes as a second half sub but his rival for the starting striker role Lasogga remains red-hot with 2 goals in a 4-0 Hertha Berlin romp to remain in 1st place in the Bundesliga 2.

Adam Straith makes the game day squad but stays on the bench in a big 2-0 win for Energie Cottbus as they leapfrog over MSV Duisburg into 6th place overall. With 4 games to play, Cottbus have a 7 point deficit to make up to get to the 3rd place promotion playoff position.

Olivier Occean doesn't start but scores the insurance goal in the 2nd half for a 2-0 win for Offenbach, keeping them solidly in 3rd place in the 3. Liga.

Nik Ledgerwood doesn't start either but comes on as a 2nd half sub in a 3-0 home win for Wehen.
