Vic
The Ref: My favorite subject is staff traveling with the team. This time to Norway, there is a whooping 14 staff members, I think it is record. Enough for a team plus 3 subs. Why so many? Do we play better with more and more staff? It looks to me more of a free vacation to Norway. Sam: I don't know who the staff are... but... given my brothers experiences with national team (track & field), you can't trust anyone, anywhere, ever. Vic
This is the list from the CSA site: Head Coach / Entraîneure-chef : Carolina Morace Assistant Coach / Entraîneure-adjoint : Andrea Neil Assistant Coach / Entraîneure-adjoint : Elisabetta Bavagnoli Goalkeeper Coach / Entraîneur des gardiens : Max Colucci Conditioning Coach / Entraîneur du conditionnement physique : Mario Familari Video Coordinator / Coordinatrice des vidéos : Sian Bagshawe Manager / Gérant : Daniel Michelucci Equipment Manager / Gérante d’équipement : Maeve Glass Doctor / Docteur : Dr. Ernesto Aliccico Athletic Therapist / Thérapeute athlétique : Leonardo Raveggi Physiotherapist / Physiothérapeute : Judy Russell Massage Therapist / Massothérapeute : Nicole Stephen Translator / Traducteur : Joe Parolini IST Manager / Gérante des SIA : Misty Thomas For a program that prides itself in women coaching women, seems odd almost half the group is male. From the Telegraph today: Fabio Capello, unsurprisingly, shares that philosophy and, alongside the 23 players flying to Johannesburg next week, there will also be a backroom team of some 35 staff. On top of that, key administrators and ambassadors, including FA president Prince William, will spend time with ‘Camp England’ at different stages of the tournament. In size, Capello’s England staff is identical to that of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s during the 2006 World Cup, but the Swede had more involved in administration, rather than directly with football. Capello has more coaches and assistants, as well as a general manager in Franco Baldini, who is the main aide and advisor. There are also more medical staff and a team of three scouts who will travel around South Africa gathering information on opponents. In David Beckham, Stuart Pearce, Ray Clemence and Sir Trevor Brooking, there will still be a considerable English presence among the non-playing staff in and around the Rustenburg training base. Even so, Capello has surrounded himself with his trusted inner-circle from past jobs and it is this group who will carry most sway when he makes the big decisions. Among the administrators, a large proportion of the staff travelling to South Africa are long-standing FA employees who have extensive tournament experience. As well as the coaches, some of the more interesting positions include a sports psychologist, two doctors, an osteopath, two physiotherapists and four masseurs as well as a full-time chef, video technician, security chief and the FA’s in-house website editor. It will certainly be a long queue at check-in next week when they all depart for South Africa but, should England bring back the World Cup, no one at the FA will complain about the cost. _______________________________ May 10: Mirror Football's John Cross presents a guide to the who's who of the Three Lions men and women behind the scenes... England backroom staff: Fabio Capello: head coach The Italian boss is hands-on on the training pitch as well as being a strict disciplinarian, tactician and stickler for detail. Franco Baldini: general manager Capello's trusted lieutenant who organises everything off the field as well as liaising with the players. Italo Galbiati: Assistant manager Enforces Capello's wishes on the training pitch as he puts the players through their paces. Stuart Pearce: first team coach More a cones man than Galbiati but the Under-21 chief is very much part of the senior fold too. Franco Tancredi: Goalkeeping coach Capello's trusted keeper coach who will have a say as to who will be England's No.1 this summer. Ray Clemence: Goalkeeping coach A member of the old guard, his experience and knowledge of English keepers essential. Stefano Tirelli: fitness coach A new member of the set-up. Has worked as AC Milan, Chelsea and specialises in recovery and acupuncture. Massimo Neri: fitness coach Capello's more traditional fitness guru, making sure the players are fit for the World Cup. Christian Latanzio: Sports psychologist This is optional, but Capello is a firm believer in having the right mentality and his players having belief. Gary Lewin: FA Head of Medicine Former Arsenal physio who is so well liked and trusted by Capello that he accompanies him regularly, even on scouting missions. Carl Todd: Assistantt to Gary Lewin/team masseur Assistant to Lewin but will be busy this summer. More focused on massage than physio. Rob Thornley: masseur Brother of ex-Manchester United winger Ben Thornley, who is a close pal of David Beckham (plus two other masseurs, rotating from Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United) Nathan Gardiner: Ledley King's fitness coach Spurs' fitness guru works with King every day and knows the limitations and programmes. Has been given a World Cup call-up specially for King. Ian Beasley: FA head doctor Lewin's long-term trusted doctor who used to be with him at Arsenal. Leif Sward: FA contracted doctor for tournament Long-serving member of backroom staff who the players know and like. Michelle Farrar: Team England liaison officer She is the person who sends the texts to the players to tell them whether or not they're in the squad. She can make or break their hearts. Ray Whitworth: Head of security The burly security guard looks after the team on trips but attention around the WAGs gave him more problems at the last World Cup. Adran Bevington: Head of Communications Accompanies Fabio Capello everywhere he goes when the newspapers are around. Press Officers: Joanne Budd, Mark Whittle, Scott Field, Stuart Mawhinney, Anna Pitcher. _______________________________ I'm not completely sold on Prince William, but the full-time chef is genius. Richard
Have to wonder why a conditioning coach is needed in Norway. If they are not in top condition before they step on the plane they shouldn't be going. And why are three therapists plus a doctor required? What's an IST Manager? For an association that cries poverty and constantly seeks to increase taxes on recreational players this seems excessive.
Vic
Could be tied to use-it-or-lose-it-funding either directly or in their perception. Something I noticed about the English, and what the Americans are great at too, is having a strong marketing/communications presence when they camp or travel. Richard
The CSA seldom if ever even sends a media specialist with the team, but they'll send a conditioning coach, three physiotherapists and a team doctor. I also sometimes wonder about sending an equipment manager, surely the team manager can also handle the balls, cones and laundry of the uniforms! We're talking the CWNT here not the Brazilian WC team staffed with multi-millionaire hotshots :-(

Has been given a World Cup call-up specially for King. Sounds like the crew for a Hollywood blockbuster, where every big name actor has his or her own personal entourage in tow. I take it that Gareth Barry doesn't have his own fitness guru. Surprised they didn't include a special liason for the wives/girlfriends.
AlanDouglas
The staff are already under contract. The home team pays the visiting team's expenses. So what's the problem again?
Vic
Interesting. I was under the impression some of the staff were on services-rendered contracts and am quite surprised the Norwegians are picking up 100% of the costs. Thanks for clarifying things. The Ref
The staff are already under contract. The home team pays the visiting team's expenses. So what's the problem again? The problem is that it is not right and an abuse to tag along so many people. Remember when they took to China the lady who run a website pro WNT and called her video technician. AlanDouglas
I'm surprised that people suspect corruption and abuse of power. Morace is Italian - they're not known for that sort of that.
Vic
They're also known for success in soccer, so we're in the same holding pattern as ever, waiting to see if her success at the senior level can compensate for her fumble at the U20. And I suspect we'll all become either very loud fans or antagonists once that becomes known, as it should be.

Its time Carolina learned to coach in english or french ... that umbilical cord needs to be cut.

Vic
A good read on the slightly different skill set required for women's soccer medical staff: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704853404575323031017740198.html

kj52
Thanks for posting that Vic, I knew some of the basics (just what the commentators talked about) from watching the playoffs last year but hearing what she went through, my hat's off to her. Those gals in the WPS are inspirational, no overpaid selfish players there, just athletes who truly love the game.
